We absolutely loved our stay at King Garth! It is located in such a tranquil location beside the river and away from other houses, but with alpacas for company! The hot tub was perfect to relax in and we enjoyed a cosy, candlelit evening inside by the fire afterwards! It was fascinating to read about the history of the building too! Will definitely be back :)

Such a lovely spot. Very idyllic and private. Pitches were a decent distance from each other which was really nice - it was nice knowing other people were around but having your own private space. Dog friendly, which was brilliant - camped for the first time with our boy. He didn't like the owls! We will be back!

We had a wonderful time at Woodsworth Exploring - our kids loved camping in a woodland, and it is well-looked after and beautiful. You do have to walk in with your gear, but they provide wheelbarrows for you to use. Emma was very responsive and helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and hope to come back sometime soon!

We stayed as a birthday treat for my 12 year old. 2 adults, 4 children and our dog. It was a truly fantastic stay from start to finish. Such a unique house and experience. The kids absolutely loved swimming in the river, looking after the alpacas, the hot tub and going back to basics. It was lovely seeing them enjoying themselves with no distractions of the modern world. Games by candle light and food over the bbq, what more could you ask for. Jane was fantastic and made sure we knew everything that was needed before we arrived. Can’t wait to come back.

Absolutely tranquil and family friendly site, second only to the amazing family run operation, which was so welcoming. Both John and Joe were interested in making our stay as comfortable as possible without being overbearing. They care for their site and their customers. Our second time here. Absolutely wonderful hosts, John would’ve put our tent up for us just to stop us arguing!! They’re always around, cleaning, helping and chatting. Such a great place to go camping, the owners are amazing people and are always more then happy to help with anything, they have good facilities with hot water, showers, pot washing station, cold drinking water. They also have a small nature walk on site and long meadow grass and wild flower between plots. The plots are nicely spread out with lots of room between other campers and the pots are a good size. 10/10 would highly recommend

A fabulous campsite with a real family feel. Very friendly staff, clean facilities, lovely location, great supply in the honesty shop. My children loved playing in the play area which was central to part of the campsite. This meant they could happily make friends while we could keep a watchful eye and do other things at camp. Baby ducks! You can't go wrong.

A truly unique stay in a beautiful location. The lane was a little challenging in my picanto but we managed it and was well worth the trip! So much provided in terms of wood, charcoal, crockery candles! Would definitely stay again :)

We’ve just got back from 3 nights camping at Moss Rose.
The owners are so friendly and helpful, the pitches are big and surrounded by lovely long grass.
While the loos and showers are small they are very clean and shower hot and powerful. (I think there are plans to add more)
The little play area in the middle is the central point for all children and great for keeping an eye on them from your pitch.
The best think about the site is the lovely friendly atmosphere
This was our second visit and definitely won’t be our last.

I stayed at Moss Rose as a female, first time, solo camper, and I couldn't have chosen a better place to feel completely safe, relaxed, and build confidence for future solo escapades. So much so, that after my 3rd (officially booked) night, I was so happy that Kel & Joe had space for me to stay an extra night!
The site itself is just perfect for me, feels "wild" in it's beautiful rural surroundings, with pitches mown into well defined areas separated by long grasses and wildflowers - but with the amenities of clean showers, toilets, fridge, freezer, coffee machine, microwave etc. So whilst I didn't need to use any of these, I can definitely pack lighter next time I stay knowing I don't have to haul as many toiletries, cooling, and charging equipment. I definitely enjoyed browsing in, and donating to little Stan's Honesty Shack for wood, kindling and other bits and bobs - he has it all covered!
As hosts, you won't find friendlier that Kel, Joe, & John. It's so apparent how much they love what they do, and how much they invest in their guests loving their experience too.
I can't wait to come back, wish I'd have found this little gem of a site and of a family before the end of the season x

We loved staying at the beautiful King Garth, the hot tub was perfect after getting the fire going and sitting in candle light, in front of the fire is the most comforting feeling in the world. A very quiet and peaceful sight with gorgeous views and riverside walks with a pub about 30 mins walk away. We did get lost on the way to the cottage so make sure to follow the map to cargo village and not the middle of a field on the other side of the river 🤣 We even got to feed alpacas and theyre very funny little characters and very friendly. We will be staying again and very recommended

We loved camping on John's farm I loved that they ate environmently friendly having their pitches surrounded by patches for wildlife an flowers ..Joe his son was always on hand if you needed anything . There was a fridge freezer ..microwave to use and coffee making facilities.Thete wa also Stans Honesty shack for essentials you might have forgotten. The views were great. We stayed for 3 nights and would have stayed a fourth but for a weather warning ..not Joe or John's fault!! Will definitely going back

We loved camping at Moss Rose Campsite. It was everything we needed and more. We've camped at Doyles Dell, enclosed pitch, as we were traveling with our dog. Plenty of space on the pitch, nice warm shower, washing up station, drinking water. Picnic benches and fire pits available to rent. Wood also available for a small fee.
We were greeted by Joe, who was very friendly and helpful. Made us feel very welcomed. We will definitely go back 😊

We had a wonderful 3 night stay at Moss Rose, our children adored going to the bathroom more than normal so they could watch the Quail, the chicks and ducklings! The children loved the play area and spent a lot of time playing with their new friends. The campsite was peaceful even with all the children running riot! Only downside was not seeing the sheep, but it only means we have to stay at the campsite again!
We loved the little woodland walk round the campsite and the honesty shacks were so handy to have.
Joe was a very welcoming host and went above and beyond what was expected for a campsite host. Our children said he was very lovely and funny!
We can't wait to stay again and see the chicks they were allowed to name!

Lovely spot. very peaceful. Moss Rose team very friendly and welcoming. And feels like a responsible positive business they are developing, with bags of youthful enthusiasm and great environmental-impact philosophy.
Washing/showers could do with an update as the business develops hopefully that can be improved a little.

We loved camping at Moss Rose. It was my 16 month old son’s first time camping and it was perfect. Felt super safe and lots for him to explore. Facilities are great - we especially appreciated the fridge, microwave and charging facilities. The owners were super welcoming and on hand to answer any questions. We had the most perfect three days and can’t wait to return!

Where to go
North York Moors National Park
South of Newcastle, North York Moors National Park is a captivating expanse of heather-clad moorland, wooded river valleys, and a rugged coastline dotted with timeless villages and ancient stone monuments. Of course, there are also a range of on-site camping options, from rustic tent pitches to glamping pods and luxury yurts. Wake up from any camping site and walk across several trails that crisscross the park, including Cleveland Way National Trail passing through coastal and inland sections for a diversity of wild viewpoints. Historic landmarks in the park include Whitby Abbey, of Dracula fame, and Rievaulx Abbey, a Cistercian monastery founded in 1132.
Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
A mesmerising stretch of pristine coastline boasting golden sands and rugged dunes, Northumberland Coast AONB is situated just north of Newcastle upon Tyne. Particularly noteworthy is Bamburgh Beach. Not only is it a great place to go swimming and beachcombing, but majestic Bamburgh Castle sits on a cliff for an especially dramatic snapshot. Campers can find waterfront tent and caravan pitches with easy access to hiking, birdwatching, beach games, and water sports.
Northumberland National Park
The northernmost national park in England, Northumberland National Park is where campers go to find historic Hadrian’s Wall, a remnant from the Roman occupation of Great Britain. Several campsites dot the stunning landscape of sweeping moorlands, peaceful valleys, and sparkling rivers. Plus, as the largest protected area of night sky in Europe, the park is a perfect spot for stargazing. Adjacent to the park is Kielder Water, a gigantic man-made lake that’s great for canoeing and fishing for rainbow trout.
When to go
Camping near Newcastle upon Tyne is most comfortable from May to September, when the weather is warmest and driest. Campers should note that even in summer, temperatures rarely break into the 20s, and it does rain year-round. Spring and summer are great for wildlife viewing, especially for swallows and swifts returning for breeding season, or colonies of puffins and guillemots along the Northumberland coast. Summer is also festival season. Check out the Mouth of the Tyne Festival to enrich the camping experience around Newcastle.
