And, if the royals love North Norfolk, that's a pretty solid nod that you're on the right track for planning your own holiday. After checking out the grand manor, gardens, and museum, campers can enjoy the surrounding countryside. The house and gardens are open to the public from April to October when the royals aren’t in residence, but the estate’s 240-hectare country park is always open. A mixture of woodland and heathland with a cafe and visitor centre, it’s a pleasant place for a walk.

Fans of the royal family might also want to take a quick look at Wolferton Royal Station, once used by visiting royals for Sandringham. Now on a disused line, it is a private home but the platform is open most days between midday and 6pm. A mile or so up the road is Dersingham village, where local pubs can be found along with Dersingham Bog National Nature Reserve. The grand Houghton Hall, Bircham Windmill, and the historic town of King’s Lynn are other nearby attractions. For good old-fashioned seaside fun with amusements and fun fair rides, head for Hunstanton. For a pretty harbour town, try Wells-next-the Sea.

Meanwhile, Sandringham is found on the shores of The Wash, the enormous bay and estuary at the very top of East Anglia. With salt lagoons and mud flats, it attracts huge numbers of wading birds from late summer onwards. They are best seen from the hides at RSPB Snettisham, just a couple of miles from Sandringham.

What a unique and beautiful place to have stumbled across as a last minute change of travel plans. I almost forgot I was in Norfolk, this spot is incredibly well maintained, peaceful, a dream to wake up by the water and watch the swans and heron and has all the amenities you could need for a camping trip or similar. Great location, everywhere is accessible and yet you don’t feel trapped in the hustle and bustle of the coast. And getting a HOT shower right in nature topped it off, just what I needed.

Weekend Trip to 7 Ducks Touring and Camping

We camped in a lovely field, with amazing facilities. Clean showers with plentiful hot water, clean toilets and a washing up area. We had an electric pitch right on the edge of the fields with lovely views of the sunset. It wasn't very busy during our stay, so was very peaceful. Close to some great restaurants which were very child-friendly. We paid extra for a campfire each night, but unfortunately, due to the strong winds on our 2nd night, we thought it would be safer to not use this! The campsite manager covered it for us to prevent it getting wet in any case. Lovely place, would definitely stay here again!

Really amazing place to stay! Proper toilets and showers, nice kitchen facilities. Pitches were nice and big. Even when it was fully booked it didn’t feel busy.

This is how open the non-electric pitches area. Plenty of space, and still only a reletively short walk to the bathrooms at the entrance of the site.

This was our 2nd time at Butt Farm, and it definitely won’t be our last. We love it. The pitches are a great size. When we first arrived our allocated pitch had a tent on it but was quickly resolved, we were given 2 pitches to choose from. There are a few bbq’s which you can borrow free and fire pits for £12 per night including wood, which I think is very reasonable. Plenty of instant hot water for washing up. Fridge and freezers free to use. Nice toilets/showers, again with plenty of instant hot water (and music playing while you shower 😍). Oh and very free range eggs (chickens are loose on the site) for £2 for 6!! Brilliant. It’s only about 40 mins walk into Beverley. There’s really nothing to not like about this site. Would highly recommend. Will definitely return.

1 night at The Red Lion

I enjoyed my stay at the Red Lion campsite. It's a self-service style campsite as was well organised with gate codes etc. There was plenty of space and options for electric and non-electric, as well as a newly built children's play area. I choose to stay in one of the non-electric grass pitches which extended right back into the site away from the centre hub, and it was lovely and quiet with beautiful views. There are also fire pits to rent as well as a pub onsite directly linked with the campsite. The showers were lovely and hot too!

The views are great. It’s very peaceful. There’s a great football goal in the barn. Tony is a friendly and interesting owner. It’s a really big field with waist high grass, so being on the opposite side of it from the loos or shower is a bit of a challenge - pitch on the loos side if you can. It’s quite a long way to get water too.

Where to go

Norfolk Coast AONB

The Norfolk Coast AONB is a stretch of protected coastline that stretches from Snettisham in the west to Mundesley in the east and includes the popular seaside towns of Cromer and Sheringham. It’s a great spot for walking and cycling, and also offers very dark skies for stargazing enthusiasts. Towns within the AONB area offer a variety of camping options, or campers can visit on day trips from the Sandringham area. Perhaps the most impressive sight is the colonies of seals at Blakeney Point, best reached by boat or via Horsey Beach (where you can walk).

Norfolk Broads

Campers who like the idea of sleeping on a boat should check out the Norfolk Broads, which are part of the larger Broads National Park that spans Norfolk and Suffolk. The network of largely navigable rivers and lakes were formed by the flooding of peatlands and are an attractive area of calm water, windmills, wildlife, and birds. Make a day trip from the Sandringham area of stay on a houseboat, in a waterside cottage, at a simple tent site, or in a well-equipped caravan park.

Snettisham

Snettisham Nature Reserve is administered by the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds), so is a must-visit spot for bird enthusiasts. From late summer, tens of thousands of wading birds take flight from the mudflats, saline lagoons, and salt marshes. Wildlife observation hides provide visitors with great views of the spectacle. It’s just north of Sandringham so campers staying in Sandringham can easily visit, but there are other campsites around nearby Dersingham and Snettisham village.

When to go

Summer is the best time to visit Sandringham as this is when the weather will be best for camping and other outdoor activities, including touring the gardens at Sandringham House. Tent camping will be most comfortable between June and September, but cabins, cottages, and even houseboats (in the Norfolk Broads) mean you can comfortably visit the Sandringham and Norfolk area year-round if you select your accommodation wisely.
