Earn this patch by being the first to spend a night outside at a new Hipcamp.

Welcome to Rootbound Ranch in Northern Ontario. We are 15 minutes north of 17 highway, Blind River. 5-6 hours northwest of Toronto, 9 hours east of Thunder Bay, between Sault Saint Marie and Sudbury. We have 2 large pasture spaces. 1 has been cut and 2 has not. The pastures are not fenced. However there are portable livestock panels available, as an extra. We have clean well water and the capacity to get water to troughs. You will need to bring your own supply of feed and hay. You can choose to camp out with your horse or livestock. Camping is also available at Backwater Paradise and Left Field on Lake Hope. We do have a shower and toilet facilities on the property of Almost Paradise. It is walking distance or a short drive. Google maps is not dependable out here. We do ask for an arrival time, if possible so we can meet at the road/entrance to avoid confusion. Rootbound Ranch, formally known as Lake Hope Farm, was a cattle farm and recovery center with a team of work horses that was closed down in 1980. The old barn has since collapsed, the farm had become overgrown. I grew up here and moved to the city for a few years but my love for this land never left. I had a camp here for several years before moving back. We have been here 5 years, breathing life back into the properties, pushing back the bush, mowing fields and brush/brambles back to grass and this year, prepared to share this space. We are happy to be able to do this, be it a learning curve. We went for low prices to figure it all out and hopefully, get feedback for any improvements we can make here. Got goats? There is a well on site to fill up your water troughs. Whether you are looking for a holiday stay or just passing through, we have the capacity to share what we have here and accommodate your travelling, with horses or livestock. Camping is available at our other locations walking distance from the farm, if you choose not to stay with your animals. Backwater Paradise, Left Field and recently added, Almost Paradise. Almost Paradise is where we are setting up for a future cottage rental, and currently provide an RV and tent site, as well as a new toilet and shower facility. Check out our extras for hardwood, eggs, shower and paddle boat rental etc. These extras are available to all our campers. You can also choose to camp where your livestock is. An outhouse will be added this summer so stay tuned for that! The entrance can fit my Ford Dually and 24 foot trailer. To the left of the driveway (facing north) is where we free range our chickens and ducks (they do not go to the pastures). Our livestock guardian dogs are also contained there, Maddy and Freya. To the right of the driveway is the available space for those travelling with horses or livestock. We are new at this so if you have any questions/concerns please reach out. We would like to work with folks and get it right. We are very excited about this new endeavor!!!

Quiet and safe equestrian camp spot

Rootbound Ranch Camp n Horse 1

I overnighted at Jackie’s lovely pasture on my way across Canada with my horse and pooch. There was tons of room to set up a roomy e-corral, and lots of grass for my girl to graze. Since I had the place to myself and well away from the house, my dog was allowed off leash; there is a little 15-minute trail through the woods adjacent to the pasture that made for a nice morning walk. Jackie delivered a water tank directly to the site, and had it not been rainy, I’d have taken her up on her offer of a fire ring. For those who aren’t self-contained, there’s a shower and toilet a couple minutes’ walk away. This is a quiet, pretty, safe spot adjacent to the lake. Jackie is a great host! I look forward to staying again.
