Less than an hour's drive from Chicoutimi, the Saguenay National Park is a first-class destination for Hipcampers thanks to the Saguenay Fjord, whose rocky cliffs and thick forest stretch 243 kilometres to the St. Lawrence River. The best view of the fjord is from a zodiac boat tour, a sailing tour, or a fishing tour. Hipcampers can explore trails on either side or stay in one of 13 campsites in the park. Early risers will catch a glimpse of the local wildlife: moose, birds, and foxes. A day access pass is required and available for purchase online.
In the heart of the city, La Pulperie de Chicoutimi Museum is a tourism center preserving the culture and history of the area with indoor and outdoor attractions including a large park. Amble down the walking paths to view the old paper mill. Access to the park is free, however, certain exhibits have admission fees. Camp nearby at the Baie des Ha! Ha!, a waterfront cove offering views of the Saguenay River.
Brimming with white birch trees, more than 2,000 lakes, and mountain peaks, the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve was created in 1968 with 22 private hunting and fishing clubs operating inside. Add a visit to Camp Mercier—a famous cross-country ski center that boasts 70 kilometres of trails. Equipment rentals are available, but no reservations are taken, so start the day early to get good gear. The snow tube park and outdoor fire pit are family favorites. Camp nearby in the municipality of l'Anse-Saint-Jean with glamping, cabins, and A-frames available.
Chicoutimi flies under the radar compared to other locations, so camping and crowds are manageable all year. Snowfall begins in early December and lasts until March, making January and February the best time for skiers to visit Chicoutimi when the snow pack will be deepest. Spring rolls around in early April until May, and the summer season begins in June. Hot temperatures can last until mid-September, so there’s plenty of time for hiking and boat tours. Experience the vibrant leaf colours in fall from late September until early November.
