Farm stays near Niagara-on-the-Lake

Walking down Queen Street in the Heritage District feels a little like strolling through a 19th-century storybook with whimsy shop names, galleries, ice cream shops, and a much-photographed clock tower right in the middle of the road. You’ll find culture (in the form of the Shaw Festival) plus plenty of history to explore—set on the shores of Lake Ontario, Niagara-on-the-Lake was once Ontario’s capital, and several battles of the War of 1812 were fought nearby. It’s a perfect starting point for visiting some of the hundreds of area wineries and thousands of park acres. And of course, Niagara Falls is just down the road.

Welcome to our charming cabin, built in the summer of 2022 from a simple 12X26 Amish frame. *Important note: Lake Rd is busy and there will be road noise that dies down after 11pm. There is a historic and active railroad line behind the cabin and you will hear the train pass through the day and night. Some people have found it cool or relaxing but others have not. Nestled on its own 4-acre parcel within our family's 12-acre plot, this cozy retreat offers a private driveway and setting for your getaway. New additions this year include a fire ring and porta-potty, adding to the complete experience of your stay. Just a mile down the road, you'll find access to Lake Erie, boasting a small beach and kayak slip. On clear nights, don't miss the opportunity to gaze at the stunning stars above. Your host, Brian, has infused the cabin with photography and treasures from his global journeys, adding a unique touch to your stay. The hosts philosophy is to not bother you at all during your stay unless you have a specific need or concern, so your stay is all yours. The price is kept low to reflect this a campsite rental, not a hosted Airbnb. With that said every effort is made to make things comfy. Features include: - Private driveway - 12-foot porch with a porch bar - Four windows for a refreshing cross breeze (East-West orientation) - Finished floors, walls, and ceiling, with insulated walls for comfort - - 7-slot vinyl record bar for music enthusiasts - Wood stove (available November - February) - Lockable doors for security - Fire ring and camping chairs for outdoor enjoyment - Porta-potty with pump sink - Garbage bin and dish sink -Common Kitchen items like plates, bowls, cups, cutlery etc… -Garbage Bags (If garbage is used please take with you upon departure) True campsite experience and not an Airbnb rental, meaning there is no electricity, water, or sewer on the property. However, we provide battery packs and solar options for your convenience. The dish sink operates with a foot pump connected to a 5-gallon water jug. Guests are welcome to bring their own wood or explore the surrounding area for available resources. For your safety, please exercise caution when venturing into the woods and avoid approaching the active train tracks located at the back of the property. While the passing train adds to the rustic charm of the setting, it may NOT be suitable for light sleepers. Road traffic noise tends to calm down in quiet hours. Bed sleeps 2 but up to 3 welcome. We hope you enjoy your stay at what we believe is the coziest camp in WNY. Feel free to reach out with any questions or special requests. We look forward to hosting you soon!

Welcome to Four Willows Regenerative Farm! Ever since we moved onto this beautiful property a few years ago, we dreamed of sharing it with others. It is a truly magical and peaceful setting, and we hope you love it here as much as we do! The property is made up of 48 mostly wooded acres. Our home, vegetable and herb gardens, mini-orchard of various fruit trees, and little farm are situated on the front few acres with the forest and campsites situated behind the barn and pond. We currently have an off-grid luxury tent set up for your use in a small clearing near the front portion of the forest, as well as several spots throughout the forest available if you prefer rustic tent camping with your own set up. We're still growing, and hope to add water and electric one day, but for now we welcome you to fully immerse yourself in the beauty of nature and enjoy the off-grid experience. We have a communal portapotty set up with a makeshift handwashing station for your use, and you can feel free to bring a generator or rent ours. We are happy to provide tours of the farm where you can meet the animals, or to show you around the forest. There are several easy trails throughout the woods, along which you will find raspberries, blackberries, mushrooms and other things to forage at various times of the year. It is a perfect place for bird watching, seeing other wildlife, and stargazing. Please be aware that you will find ticks, mosquitoes, and poison ivy throughout the woods. We are actively using regenerative approaches to manage these issues, but they are an unfortunate part of nature and we ask you to use caution. Please don't hesitate to ask if you need help with identifying anything. We are located a few minutes away from the beautiful and historic Medina village, along the Erie canal, where you will find several cute shops, restaurants and bars. There is also a boat launch, a skatepark, several playgrounds, and grocery stores within a few minutes from us, and we are just down the road from the National Iroquois Wildlife refuge. Niagara Falls, Buffalo, and Rochester are all within about an hour drive as well if you're looking for a central base from which to explore the WNY region.

Farm stays near Niagara-on-the-Lake guide

Where to go

Dufferin Islands

Small but mighty, this 10-acre park sits within earshot of the roaring Niagara Falls. Stroll the trails, which run on footbridges between creeks, ponds, and tiny, picturesque islands. Bring your birding books to help you identify some of the abundant avian life here—the region is one of the best in the province for birders, with hundreds of birds living and migrating through every year.

Queenston Heights

Today, this 1812 battle site is much more. You’ll see the monument to General Isaac Brock long before you get here—especially if you’re biking up and down the Niagara Parkway, which skirts along 100-meter cliffs. Walk around the gardens and spend some time at Landscape of Nations, a tribute to the Indigenous peoples who fought on this site.

Fort George National Historic Site

Just beyond the center of town, history comes alive at this site where costumed interpreters take visitors through the events of more than 200 years ago. Enjoy the music of a drum and fife corps and take in a musket demonstration, then hike or bike a series of trails that link Fort George with other nearby historic sites.

Rock Point Provincial Park

This park set on Lake Erie packs a punch when it comes to activities. Swim along the kilometer-long beach, hike the two-kilometer Woodlot Trail, fish for bass and pickerel from the limestone outcrops, and explore fossils on a 350-million-year-old former coral reef.

When to go

Summer is the heart of high season, and July and August tend to be hot, humid, and very busy, especially on weekends, when you should book well in advance. Late spring is warm but potentially buggy, so pack a little spray. In autumn, the deciduous forests burst into a million shades of gold, red, and orange, although evenings get cold and dark quickly. Many facilities operate on a limited schedule in winter, but the cold months are perfect for anyone who enjoys skiing or skating.

Know before you go

  • Queen Elizabeth Way—the main highway that connects Niagara-on-the-Lake with Toronto—becomes extremely busy in summer, especially on Fridays (headed west) and Sundays (headed east). Plan your drive around peak times.
  • If you want to leave the car at home, GO Transit operates regular rail service between Union Station in Toronto and the central train station in Niagara Falls, about 20 kilometres south.
  • E-bikes are a perfect way to explore the town and surrounding wine region. Rent them in Niagara Falls.
  • You can find many places to stock up on camping gear in larger nearby cities like St. Catharines.
