Fremont culture and Anasazi people were the first known inhabitants of the area. Petroglyphs, pithouses, arrowheads, pottery, and manos dating from A.D. 750 to 1250 found in the area are evidence that it was on a major thoroughfare of early indigenous peoples. At nearby Parowan Gap ancient people inscribed petroglyphs on smooth-surfaced boulders that feature snakes, lizards, mouse-men, bear claws, and mountain sheep. Located near the Parowan Gap there are dinosaur tracks. East of the Gap and petroglyphs hikers can discover Hadrosaurs tracks that were originally formed in non-resistant mudstone. Later, the Old Spanish Trail
passed through the area.
The nearby town of Parowan was founded in 1851, twelve months after Parley P. Pratt and members of his exploring party discovered the Little Salt Lake (dry lake bed)
which is straight out from the property.
The area was traveled by early settlers that used the nearby Red Hills to pass through the area
to hide from aggressive Indians that hid in the nearby mountains that watch for them traveling on the Spanish Trail. Many arrow heads and artifacts have been found on and near the property.
Later (early 1900's) sheep herders camped in the same place as the location of the property.

The view was beautiful, although it was super windy and raining I still enjoyed it! It was somewhat hard to find- the written directions were not accurate but once we just drove we found it! Beautiful views but around the sites it seemed like a lot of random stuff!

Excellent campsite, we had plenty of room for 3 tents and 2 trucks. The views of the red rock are great especially in the morning. There's aPorta a Potty about 100 feet away, I appreciated the illumination at night. The site is quiet and the cost was reasonable, this was much more private than the nearby BLM campsites. The proximity to Capitol Reef and Torrey worked for us. One thing to be prepared for is wind at night and in the morning, common in this area
PS recommend breakfast at the Wild Rabbit Cafe in Torrey.

Absolutely loved this campground. The sights were beautiful and it was well maintained. It was secluded enough that there was no campers nearby and we had the whole area to ourselves. But it was also fairly close to Panguitch for things like bathrooms and gas. It was about 40 minutes from Bryce Canyon NP which was a HUGE plus. Instructions on how to get to site were clear.
I would say the only downside of this campground was the dirt road there. The road is a little scary in a small car but manageable. At one point, you cross through a dried river bed. that is fairly sandy and has a small drop off. Our little Nissan Sentra made it through but we were very stressed it wouldn’t. The only suggestion I would make for Gunsmoke is maybe adding a tire ramp to make that drop off less stressful.
That aside, our stay was perfect!

Views were gorgeous, ground was flat, site was about 15 minutes from Capitol Reef, with a general store, gas stations, and coffee shops between the two. Campsite #4 was a tiny bit separated from the rest of the sites, making it a little more private. Porta potty wasn’t being monitored by host at all the weekend we were here—bring your own toilet paper. Other than that, everything was perfect!

This was a wonderful primitive campsite! It's everything it says in the description, and nothing more. It's secluded with beautiful scenery, and it's close to town if you're looking for a burger. (Try Capitol Burger if you need a suggestion. )
