Maryvale Mountain Escape

2. Maryvale Mountain Escape

16km from Antigonish · 1 site · Lodging · Antigonish, NS
One of the highest points in Antigonish, offering breathtaking views of the Northumberland Strait. Situated on the edge, you can look across the Strait to Prince Edward Island, with views over the top of Cape George to Cape Breton. This is an all-terrain vehicle and snowmobile enthusiast’s getaway, with local Eigg Mountain ATV Association trails right on your doorstep—some of the best in the province. A 15-minute drive with recreational vehicles will take you to a local hotspot, Steinhart’s Distillery. The area is accessible with all-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive vehicles (until snow makes the roads impassable), with a trail leading from the camp that can also be hiked to another amazing lookout—perfect for a campfire or an ATV ride. For this year, bathroom facilities will be a porta-potty. The cabin has roof, walls, and 90% of the floor insulated, keeping it warm and cozy, with lots of wood available. Pots, pans, and silverware are provided for cooking on the wood stove or barbecue. A three-burner propane stove will be added soon. Clean spring water is provided for drinking and cooking. Hot water will need to be boiled, and a lobster pot and cooker are available for this purpose, along with a sink to wash dishes. There are no bedrooms this year—the cabin is open concept, although a change room is in the works, hopefully before snow. One large stereo system is provided and set up to connect to your iPhone. There is pretty decent cell service on the mountain in this location. A generator with lights and extension cords will be provided. Some basics, such as soap, salt, pepper, paper towels, steak spice, and butter, will be supplied. Bring your own sleeping bags. The cabin has two couches and two reclining chairs, with plans for an extra mattress. During the winter months, parking will be available at the bottom of the mountain in my yard, with lots of room. A ski boose is provided to take your gear up the mountain. This valley receives great annual snowfall, which can save you a little time compared to driving to the Highlands. Our local club recently purchased a brand-new groomer, and the local warming shelter is only about 15 minutes from the camp. Steinhart’s Distillery is open until 8 p.m. during the winter.
