Fjords, waterfall trails, and river canoeing adventures await campers near Deer Lake.
Situated on 3,000 hectares of beautiful landscape, Barachois Pond Provincial Park features hiking trails, beaches, and great fishing. Backcountry camping near Erin Mountain is ideal for campers who want a more rustic experience. Or set up at an on-site campsite with amenities such as restrooms and dog parks. Then, bird watch, kayak, or canoe along the pond. Winter campers can also enjoy cross-country skiing or snowshoeing within the park.
Gros Morne National Park’s geology—full of dramatic cliffs and towering peaks—is 485-million years in the making. A UNESCO National Heritage Site, the park is made up of tableland hikes, the Western Brook Pond Fjord, and Cow Head’s shallow bay. Hikers won’t want to miss Gros Morne Mountain Trail, an 8-kilometre loop known for astonishing views of the coast. Gros Morne also hosts many special events throughout the year, including Trails Tales Tunes in spring and the Gros Morne Fall Festival in autumn. The park features campsites with bathrooms as well as primitive camping sites near the trails.
Popular for salmon fishing, Sir Richard Squires Memorial Scenic Provincial Park is also home to Big Falls, an 87-metre waterfall on the Humber River. Campers can also enjoy camping, birdwatching, canoeing, and hiking on forested trails and through woodlands that offer spectacular views of the river. The park features more than 140 campsites that include picnic tables and fire pits.
Deer Lake offers year-round activities for campers with its nearby attractions. June through September is when temperatures hover around 25°C. However, the changing colors of foliage and harvest festivals also draw visitors during the fall season. In wintertime, the Deer Lake region attracts campers who like winter activities like skiing and ice fishing. Average low temperatures dip down to -12°C.
