Guests may choose from a range of camping sites — some nestled near the wetlands, others more open with wide skies and lake views. Facilities include excellent water quality, toilets, and showers. Accommodation includes the Flying Horse Barn with three studio rooms at $150 per night per room, and a cabin available for $100 per night (bring your own linen/towels etc or $25 extra per stay for supplied linen for all accommodation)
To the west lies the dramatic Muriwai / Rangatira coastline with sweeping Tasman Sea sunsets. To the east is the sheltered Kaipara Harbour, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere and a vital feeding ground for marine life and migratory birds such as godwits, knots, plovers, and terns. A quiet lagoon to the north shelters swans, ducks, pūkeko, paradise shelduck, kingfisher, fantail, warbler, and silvereye.
At dawn, birdsong fills the air. At dusk, frogs rise in chorus, and from deep within the reedbeds the rare Australasian bittern calls — a nationally threatened bird whose presence signals an intact wetland.
The retreat is also home to a free-roaming herd of horses at the Horse Inspired Learning Centre. The horses are free-roaming, barefoot, unridden, and without covers. We have a well established banana grove which we harvest throughout the year. We are in a relatively quiet space for being just 15 minutes to town center and you'll wake up to rich bird song every morning and fall asleep to the sound of ruru calling from the trees.
We are a few minutes to the lovely Pukenui forest reserve, 15 minutes to Parihaka, 20 minutes to Whangārei Falls and Abbey Caves, 35-50 minutes to bay and open ocean beaches.

When we first turned up to Sommerfeldt Farm, the view took our breath away. It was simply beautiful. It was the calm we needed. We really enjoyed our over night stay and am excited to return.
Judith was excellent and so accommodating, it made the stay easy.

We had a great camping stay at Lekker Stay, thanks Magda!
The site is well located ons the intersection of two main roads within Whangarei Heads, close to the shops. The site had all the amenities we needed for camping comfortably. The hosts and their two dogs were very friendly!
Recommend Magda’s place to anyone else and will be staying there again in the future.

Awesome stay! The farm is beautiful and it was delightful to be greeted by horses and a pig upon our arrival. The location is so quiet and peaceful and close to a lovely walk through Henry's Reserve. Great first camping trip for our dog.

Wow!!! We spent 12 days in the South Island camping and this place was the highlight. This may be the best hipcamp I’ve EVER stayed at. If you are looking for a true secluded camping experience, outdoor living, and (as an add bonus) hanging with pigs, chickens, and peacocks this is the place to be. Everything from the kitchen to the bathroom is made from recycled materials. If you have kids there is a great area for them to play and a “secret trail” with tree house for them to explore. This is what camping is about. I would have paid twice this to stay at blue spur farm. I hope the rest of New Zealand catches on to hipcamp.

What a great spot! No fuss with checking in, details for entry are available upon confirmation, easy access to an awesome spot.
Toilet, shower, kitchen area & water.
Seating area, campfire pit, etc.
&& the sweetest dogs stopped by for a visit, plenty of other farm animals: peacocks, chickens, cows, pigs, etc
We wish we could have stayed longer.

Was definitely the most unique stay of our 2 weeks+ trip. Absolutely loved the kitchen area which was made entirely of recycled materials. Exploring the farm was itself an attraction, we were even approached by three very friendly and talkative pigs, as well as two very excitable dogs. The spot was also easily accessible. Definitely recommend to anyone visiting Hokitika wanting a nice little country getaway.
