Pitches and pods in the Cairngorms National Park

Surrounded by pine forests with views of gently rolling hills, Cairngorms Glamping & Campsite offers pitches and pods close to the River Don. This is a picturesque and gentle part of the Cairngorms National Park, near to everything you might come here to visit. There’s hiking and biking all around, castles, lochs, and whisky distilleries not far away. Balmoral is half an hour’s drive. Glenbuchat is 15 minutes. And then there's the campsite itself; open year round and with great family facilities—think playground, a seasonal food hut, and 'Critter Corner' where you can meet Jimmy the donkey and other animals.

Your furry friends are welcome too, as the site is dog friendly. In fact, it’s generally friendly and a relaxed place for a stay whether you’re in a tent, campervan, or motorhome. Campfires are allowed and off-ground fire pits are provided free of charge. So too are a few bikes, should you be here without your own. The site’s seven acres is split between two fields and home to almost 50 pitches. Most are off grid but there are a handful with electric hook up and connected water as well.

Facilities are pretty simple—a couple of flushing loos and hot water showers—but are added to in the summer when the site is at its busiest. Peak times also bring an on-site shop and a food hut serving bacon butties and burgers. This handy service, the two play areas (one free, one at a small extra charge) and Critter Corner, makes camping here with kids rather easy. To make it even easier and more relaxing, consider booking one of the site’s four pods. These come with beds and sleeping bags, cooking equipment, an en suite shower and loo—and, to top it all off, some of them have a private hot tub too.

A dog friendly, great place to chill and relax! Get a cuddle from the pygmy goats, feed Jimmy the donkey, you can even meet our alpacas. The kids have a large open space for running around, a couple of play areas and Swingball onsite for all. There is a seasonal site shop and food hut. Best of all, you will be surrounded by hills and the River Don.

Absolutely lovely weekend spent at Robert’s site, really well set up for kids and very decent prices. Loved the animals and the free bikes! Great location for exploring the east Cairngorms and beyond. Thanks for a lovely stay! 😊

Cairngorms Glamping
Very friendly and welcoming
A gorgeous rustic site in a remote spot with fantastic views. Unfortunately our trip was cut short due to incoming bad weather, however we will be back. Very friendly welcome and very accepting of my, sometimes slightly vocal beagle. A lovely spot.

Cairngorms Glamping
Fantastic, chilled weekend
This was our first time camping with the kiddos (7 and 4). The campsite is lovely, spacious, relaxed. There's Critter corner and you can go and see and pet the animals at your leisure. There's a few park areas. A huge plus was how clean everything was, it's got a comfy, farmy feel to it but the portaloos were spotless, and the showers and proper toilets were also perfect and clean. The owners were so down to earth and great with the kids. There is food served 9-10am and 5-6pm and it was simple and delicious. We had an absolutely fantastic weekend and would recommend to all.

From the host
We have 10 non-electric pitches in a spectacular setting, surrounded by hills and the River Don. We also have Critter Corner, an area where you can get up close with our friendly animals. We have alpacas, pygmy goats, a donkey and more. We also have a couple of kids play areas. This is all included in the price. You can also go alpaca trekking - £10 per child (16 or under) and £15 per adult. Children will need to be accompanied by a paying adult.
Nearby attractions

Cairngorms Glamping and Campsite is situated within the national park and you don’t have to get in the car to head out on great forest walks, hill walks or routes along the banks of the River Don which is just across the road from the campsite. If you want to bag a peak, head for the 565-metre summit of Ben Newe, walkable from Strathdon in just over an hour. It’s a great area for cycling too with bikes available to borrow from the campsite. Loch Muir (26 miles) is a great place for a long scenic walk with an eight-mile hike around its shores possible from the Spittal of Glen Muick visitor centre. The closest castles to the campsite are the fortified medieval tower known as Corgarff Castle (eight miles), the ruined Kildrummy Castle (12 miles) and the royal family’s Scottish pad, Balmoral (17 miles). You can visit the grounds and see the castle for free and, at certain times of the year (check ahead), there are tours of the estate and parts of the castle too. Royal Lochnagar Whisky Distillery is nearby and offers tours and tastings. Delgatie Castle (46 miles) is a bit further but still popular with campers from here thanks to its thousand-year history, wooded walks and excellent tea room. Family campers might want to take on a 40-mile drive in the other direction, through the national park, to visit Landmark Forest Adventure Park.

Food and drink

There’s an on-site shop with a few basics available in the winter. In summertime, it’s well stocked with local produce including meat and ice cream fresh from nearby farms and producers. There’s a food truck too, offering bacon sandwiches in the mornings and burgers in the evenings. For more than that, or out of season, the closest shop and place for a bite to eat is the village of Strathdon, three miles up the road. There’s a small grocery shop and The Steading Bar which serves grazing boards and pies alongside a range of local drinks. A little further away (12 miles), The Kildrummy Inn is recommended for food. For a supermarket, the closest is a fair distance, 28 miles away in Huntley, but Tesco and Asda can deliver to the site.
