River&#x27;s Edge

Niel was nothing short of courteous and friendly. Unfortunately, the site was not what we were looking for or what we had expected based on photos and reviews. We were so disappointed in being misled that we actually packed up and left day one. This site may work for some but our group really appreciates privacy and space. With this site your tents are only 20-30 feet from the house, chicken coop, and algae pond. The site says you can have 10 people but with only our three tents it would have been uncomfortably close to one another with no real congregation space. Another group was coming to join the property which is not something that we signed up for or approved, so that was really surprising to find out when we arrived. The outdoor space is shared with this second site so your outdoor kitchen, bathrooms, and non fire are not reserved as a part of the fees. The path to the river is somewhat dangerous… to the point we didn’t feel comfortable taking the dogs or walking down ourselves. Again, Neil is great, the land itself is beautiful but you are painfully aware you are camping in a residential area in someone’s backyard with little privacy, little space, and potential campsite neighbors. Might not be the best option for those who appreciate traditional camping.

Pros: close to Portland. River sound is relaxing. Kitchen includes refrigerator and running water with a large sink and countertop. Cons: bark chips and no shade at actual campsite. The trail to the river was adventurous with one dig and one human falling. The rooster takes the wake up call seriously and today it started at 4:57 am

This was our first Hipcamp experience and it was great. Neil and his wife are awesome hosts and their property is beautiful. They’re both so friendly and easy going. We stayed at the walk up site which is the lower, grassy site. The spot was perfect. We had a river view, huge area for the kids, dog, and our tents, and a water hose which was really helpful for those who wanted a shower. I can see how some might have issues going down to the river. There is a rope to hang onto on the side of the bank that definitely helps. With the rope, all of the kids in our group (from ages 5-17) were able to make it down just fine. There is also a second path to the river that is much easier, but we made it down the main path without issues (and in flip flops). Overall, we had a fun experience and couldn’t have asked for more. We’ll definitely be back next year.

What more could you ask for?

Neil and Michelle were the most gracious hosts we could have asked for. Their property is gorgeous setting up above the Clackamas River with an incredible view. Also, it was quick drive just outside of Portland. Being my first time using Hipcamp I didn't know what to expect, Neil and Michelle's hospitality and property exceeded all my expectations. I will totality recommend their spot to all my friends and will be back again soon.

Spacious and beautiful campsite.

I had a great camping trip at this lovely campsite, we absolutely loved all the natural beauty around here!!! The host Neil and Michelle exceeded my expectations, they both are very accommodating and helpful. The campsite sure was spacious, beautiful and a nice stay with a view of the river. There’s beautiful trees, and honestly to me the parking spots are super close to the campsite. I’ve being hip-camping since 2018 in California, Oregon, Washington and Idaho. This campsite is so thoughtful and considerate of hipcampers, you’ll have access to the beautiful outdoor kitchen too. I’m an SSP (Safety Service Provider) for multiple families through DHS and this campsite was very Welcoming and Respectful of its hipcampers. The kids and adults that joined me on this family summer camping trip enjoyed it too, it was wonderful to spend time with the moms and kids in the river. Camp host was prompt at returning text and answering the kid questions. I highly recommend this campsite.

Niel was an incredibly nice and generous host! My friend's and I had a lovely time enjoying views of the river while lounging. During the day, we floated back to the camp site from the McIver put in. It was a bit of workout getting back up the camp spot with our grear but it was well worth it and I would definitely do it again.

The location is perfect if you love a great river view and the space is wide for lots of fun activities. In addition, it is a very quiet location. My only thought for the owners is to keep their curtains closed at night so you don't have to peer into their house and the light from their television and lamps don't disturb the overall outdoor experience.

This was the second time I’ve gone to Neil’s site, and I’ve loved it each time. They are so kind, so easy to chat with and hang out with, and they are easy going. They obviously care a lot about their property. I can’t wait to go again this summer!

This was an absolutely wonderful retreat! From the moment we were welcomed and directed to our site to all of the details that Neil and Michelle have created go above and beyond what I had thought that a hipcamp site would be. We were in a converted van. We were able to hook up to the electricity to keep the fridge running, and there was water to use. We did most of our cooking in the pergola, and having a safe firepit in the cool evenings made for an ideal end to the days. While there were other campers nearby, we felt that we had our zone to relax in. Neil offered us a large mat to put over the gravel which made our "living room" even more comfortable. They are working on it to make it available for other seasons, all of the woodwork is beautiful and fits into the forrest setting. There was a large group in the lower camping area, I had been a little concerned but we could barely hear them, plus everyone was kind and friendly including the dogs. We rented the kayak and did a short run down the river which was lovely. I highly recommend this place and Neil and Michelle are in their right element as hosts.

Neil and his wife are very nice, cordial hosts. They are welcoming and they have put a lot of care and thought into developing their property to accommodate cool spaces to stay on their property. My partner and I went there and stayed in the walk up tent site. It was very clean, well kept and had a great view of the river. Unfortunately the description of the river access is misleading and it is not as easy to access as one might initially think. The property overlooks the river and has a steep climb down to access it and a steep climb back up. I personally selected this site because I thought it was actually on the river and we would have easy access. There are launch spots from the river but you have to drive to other parks up or down the river to do so which requires 2 cars which we only had one. I also like to hang out at rivers during the night, esp under the Full Moon and there is no way we would have attempted to walk down or back up the hillside in the dark. All in all the river was the selling point for us in selecting this site. Sadly we were unable to enjoy it in the way the listing led us to believe we would be able to. If river adventures are your thing, make sure to bring some friends with you so you have 2 cars. The shared fire pit/kitchen area is really nice but if you are staying at the walk in camp site, it can be a bit odd as if people are hanging out there having a great time, it can feel a bit odd having people above you, watching you at your campsite. Its not intentional but if you are a private person you won't like that aspect. The portapotties are also located at the top of the property which is nowhere near the walk in campsite. You have to walk up a set of stairs through the shared common area or a hilly driveway to access which is not a big deal except for when you really need to go... make sure you muster up the energy prior and plan for it! haha. I would suggest to the hosts to inform people more about the actual river access to alleviate potential disappointment. I had to reread it after arriving there. It is everything it says it is... but its still misleading for someone who has yet to experience it for themselves.

Best of the hipcamps

What a special and beautiful place to camp! We stayed in the newly upgraded RV spot and it exceeded all expectations. It sits next to a lovely forested area and has plenty of space to spread out and power and water. The grounds are immaculate with great care taken with the landscaping and personal touches like potted ferns and flowers. The community kitchen area is an example of where this hipcamp goes above and beyond. The hens and doggies that wonder the property are adorable. It is also very quiet with only chicken sounds and the river flowing below. The hosts are amazing and welcoming! This is our 8th hipcamp in the Portland area and by far our favorite. Highly highly recommend.

No regrets!

I gotta say, it was pretty hip. As a first time user of Hipcamp, I was pleasantly surprised by what River's Edge had to offer. We stayed two nights and enjoyed the custom built pergola and bar at the RV sight. The hosts, Neil and Michelle, were gracious and comfortable. Being able to put in at McIver and float all the way back to camp was a sweet bonus. The river is right down the hill, the forest is legit and the eggs are as local as it gets. Such a short jaunt from Portland, we will definitely be back.

A nice shady spot above the river

Our family had a great time here! This is a beautiful campsite right above the river and our hosts were very welcoming and accommodating. The campsite itself doesn't have a clear view to the river, but the communal area has a nice viewing platform. The path down to the river is quite steep, and a little treacherous, but my mother managed it even with a bum knee by taking it slow and steady.

Perfect and convenient getaway

This was our first Hipcamp experience, and it blew us away! The site was absolutely beautiful, and the hosts were more than welcoming and accommodating. The site had plenty of room for our party of 12, we were able to set up three large tents and still had a ton of space to relax and play in. There is a large well kept grassy yard, a fire pit for this site with wooden benches, and a picnic table. You can drive down the hill so you don’t have to walk your belongings in (probably would need 4wd if it’s poor weather to drive down, but we had no problem driving a mini van up/down in warm, dry weather. Easy to carry belongings down otherwise.). There are 2 port-o-potties that were maintained and stocked with toilet paper and hand sanitizer. We used the communal outdoor kitchen/space to cook burgers on the propane bbq there, and to clean dishes in the large sink. So convenient! The hosts even brought down s’mores kits (complete with skewers to roast them on), and the second night gave us this super cool packet that you put in the fire and it changed the color of the flames. Huge hit with the kids! There is a steep cliff on the river side, so if you are coming with smaller children be aware of that. However we managed fine with 7 kids age 3-7. It would be sweet if there were large logs or something put on the edge, just to have some sort of barrier there. River access is definitely doable, the path to the water is STEEP though! Bring sturdy shoes and you’re fine. At the bottom we just walked a short way over the rocks and found a small area to set up and hang out with the kids for a few hours. The path down is a bit sketchy with younger (3-5 year old) kids (carry them!), but it really was not bad with close supervision for the older kids. Overall, 10/10 experience and we will be back!

Peaceful, Beautiful, Relaxing, Gem

Dave and Ryan were our hosts this weekend. When we arrived, Dave came running along with his pups. We had have a 30ft trailer and he directed us to loop around and guided us right into the beautiful RV spot. He showed us the water and power hook up which at the moment is 110v extension cord and a hose and let us be til we were ready to get the grand tour of this gem. Such a beautiful place and they are always finding ways to improve the experience. Put in a vacation request at work before even leaving for home to come back. We loved it so much. PS. Never mind the wood mill. All of the beauty of this place was because of it.

The walk up campsite overlooks the river with a log table and huge log benches around a fire pit. The pond behind and provides pleasant white noise. A steep path with nature staircase and railing provides direct access to the Clackamas river which was perfect for a float down to Barton (leisurely 2hours) and beyond to Carver (a long five hours). On the river it is approximately halfway between Milo McGiver state park and Barton. The shared outdoor kitchen area has a full gas stove and sink with potable water so anything you wanted to cook is an option. I was thankful that the chickens were free range friendly without any noisy rooster companions to wake you predawn.

An oasis only 35 min from Portland

The site was amazing! I wasn’t so sure when I heard it was a private property that the host lived on, but I was so so wrong! It is private and there is good space between each site. I couldn’t hear any of the other campsites, we all had our own campfires plus a communal outdoor cooking area with propane grill, running water and fridge that you could choose to use or not. The river is just amazing (though the path to get there is tricky). We wished we had booked 4 nights instead of just 1. Will definitely plan to come back.
