Not far from Denali and other incredible national and state recreation areas, Fairbanks is an ideal base for exploring the great Alaskan outdoors. And rest assured, Fairbanks offers far more than a metropolis of strip malls. Given the tremendous expanses of open space nearby, you won’t have trouble finding a place to camp around here. Check out Chena River State Recreation Site, Whitefish Lake State Campground, Upper Chatanika State Recreation Site, or one of the many other parks in the area. Hike, canoe, fish, swim, and catch site of moose and other local wildlife. From Fairbanks you can experience the midnight sunshine (perfect for 24-hour adventuring), colorful and breathtaking displays of aurora borealis, an abundance of pristine wildlife, and plenty of solitude. No matter what time of year you visit, camping near Fairbanks offers the kind of adventure you'd be hard pressed to find in the contiguous 48 states. And of course there’s always Denali, home to the highest peak in North America and six million acres of rugged and often untouched wilderness. Get planning; your Alaska adventure awaits.
