Portals Camp features a beautiful platform with a wall made out of repurposed doors and windows from an old house. There's a large firepit and a picnic table, so you can cook your dinner over an open flame AND enjoy it right at your campsite!
Wake up to gorgeous light (check out the photos!) and take a dip in the reservoir- it's just a short hike away to swimming, kayaking, and catch-and-release fishing!
Although it is secluded, Portals is in close proximity to portapotties, a hot outdoor shower, and The Lanai (our communal outdoor kitchen area).
Currently reservation requests for this campsite are set for up to 3 campers, but can accommodate 10 people total. When booking the site for more than 3 guests please edit your request to reflect accurate headcount information in advance of your arrival. Additional campers are $30 per adult nightly.
***A NOTE ABOUT FIRES: Some campsites at Mendocino Magic have a firepit, but occasionally during the summer months the state bans fires for campers. We will keep you posted about the status of fires on the property when you book your reservation. Since we would hate to take campfires out of the camping experience, we have started the #onefire campaign to keep campers happy with a fire at our communal cooking area at the lanai, where on Friday and Saturday nights there will be a fire for all to enjoy. During a fire ban, please do not start a fire up at any camp's fire ring - guests who do so will be asked to leave without a refund.

Mendocino magic is quite a place, we had a fantastic weekend there. There were lots of other people around but it never felt remotely crowded, tons of space and the campsite we were at (Portals) was reasonably secluded but still conveniently located. The only downside to that campsite is that it's not far from the stage area; there was some sort of family reunion going on the weekend we were there and we heard the music they were playing in the evenings. Relatively minor, though.
Perhaps my favorite part of the experience was picking blackberries all weekend! They're everywhere!
Portals is a gorgeous site at the already incredible Mendocino Magic property. Tucked away from the other sites, this walk-in spot is private, has an awesome tent platform, picnic table, other table for storing your stuff, and is a 2 minute walk from porta-pottys and drinking water (and hand sani!). The air at the portals site was thick with the smell of flowers this weekend, and what felt like an actual orchestra of frogs played us to sleep both nights. Mendocino Magic indeed :)
Portals was a great site! On the map it looked somewhat near to some other sites and when we arrived we thought folks may have to pass by our site to get to theirs - but it was very private! We barely saw anyone else while we were there, and there were easily two other great spots for tents apart from the wooden platform. Super nice to have two tables - a picnic table in the sun and another one in the shade that we stored things on. We felt lucky to have a fire pit as we noticed many of the sites in the sunnier areas near brush did not have them (probably for safety?). Note there is no grill on the fire pit. There were some mosquitos around dusk but the fire helped with that. Our pup loved the family swim area - we camped out on the dock there for several hours of swimming, napping, and picnicking. We were able to use the outdoor shower near the glampsites which was a lovely unexpected perk. Lastly, there are large jugs of water placed near each porta-potty site that someone must refill every AM - so nice to have cold fresh water walking distance!
Actual campsite was great! Just as expected from the ad. And the reservoir with free kayaking was incredible. Also, Mackenzie was a very attentive host. I just have three suggestions for improvement at this site.
1) The location of the closest water source was not very clear. Most of our time there, we walked sort of far away. Then basically before we left, I discovered a closer water source. Would be great for this to be more clearly labeled.
2) The permanent residents on the property don’t keep their property up very well. Lot of junk on their lawns - walking past those areas kind of deflated some of the outdoor camping magic.
3) There was a large group across the property who was playing loud music all the way up to 10PM and it started again around 9AM. When I’m camping (even glamping) I don’t like to hear other people’s music constantly like I’m at a park in the city. So I think some restrictions around playing music at camp sites would be beneficial.
Super cool property! Portals Stage was a great place for our group of 10, with 5 tents total- but I wouldn't recommend any more than that and even that was a bit tight. There are only (2) places to put tents in the shade. We were surprised to find a large Shelter Co. tent on the site with an air mattress inside. These seem to be on every site, maybe it's a new thing. It would have been good to know ahead of time but it also took up a really good spot for one of our tents! The only negative comment I have is for the port-o-potties. They were REALLY full, dirty, and filled with flys. We tried to find some on the property that weren't full or dirty but could not. Other than that we give the place 5 stars! Portals was great for us because it was secluded from other sites. Thanks Mendo Magic!
The Portals campsite was just as pretty as the pictures. We had a great time walking around the vast property and swimming and kayaking on the reservoir-which was warm even in mid-October! The communal kitchen was an added bonus!
