When we arrived, we started setting up where the email told us to, when a woman came up asking us what we were doing there as if they weren’t expecting us. We showed her the email and it ended up being fine but It was all very odd. It was 5:30pm and we asked about the restaurant that was prominently featured on the website, but she said she was getting ready to close the kitchen. No reason given. Later we found our way to the restrooms which were both locked with signs saying “Out of Order.” So we had to drive 8 miles back into the town we just came from to eat and use the restroom. It appeared many people were living there long term in trailers. It didn’t feel welcoming although the space in which we were given to camp was just fine.

The site was at a trailer park which made me feel like I was invading someone’s residential space. People would drive by slow and look at us as if we were on display, which made us feel uncomfortable. I laid a tripwire around my site at night in fear of someone coming in. The bugs and mosquitoes were terrible and the shower and bathroom was infested with bugs with low water pressure. We were supposed to stay there 4 days. We left the very next day.

Lovey’s on the River was my first Hipcamp experience and Field Scout assignment. Jeff, the owner, was very quick to respond to my messages and gave us lots of suggestions for things to do on the property and in the area. I did not meet him in person, but felt that I could easily reach him if needed. Directions to the property from the Hipcamp website worked perfectly and we arrived around 2pm. The property called “Lovey’s Landing” and is clearly marked by a large sign. The tent camping area is on the immediate left after pulling into Lovey’s, with several parking spots available. A walnut tree in the middle of the open grassy camping area provides some shade and has a sign marked “tent area” on it. There are two picnic tables on either side of the walnut tree. One table was quite dusty on the seats, but the other was very clean.
The rest of the property houses an RV park, a dock and marina on the Sacramento River, bathrooms with showers, a covered community gathering area and a restaurant/bar.
I chose Lovey’s because I knew the Central Valley would be warm in early May and a calm float in the Sacramento River sounded quite fun! On the Hipcamp listing, swimming and fishing are marked as activities. When we arrived we inflated our inner tubes and checkin in with Christiana, the manager of the restaurant. She was very lovely and helpful. We were informed that floating and fishing off the dock were not permitted, which was not clear to us when we booked the site and a little bit disappointing. Christiana was quick to explain that it was a safety issue due to the current in that spot along the river and gave us suggestions of where we could access the river for fishing and floating. There is a dirt road that runs along the property up on a small ridge opposite the river. We ended up following this road for about a quarter mile until we found a place to walk down the river bank and tie our tubes to a tree for a relaxing dip in the river. The following day we took Christiana’s advice and walked downstream on the property past the camping area along a 4 wheel drive road to look for river access. Just after an old water pump on the right side of the road we found a moderately safe path down to the river. The shore was rocky with limited area to stand, but we made do and enjoyed the view of the river and boats occasionally passing. We didn’t catch any fish though!
All of the folks staying in the RV park were very friendly and a few stopped to talk to us. The bar was lively on a Saturday night. Just across the highway from Lovey’s is a large walnut grove, past that you have a great view of the Sutter Buttes. It was lovely to watch the sunrise from the dirt road running along the highway-side ridge of the property.
Lovey’s is charming and the people are down to earth. Its a great base camp for river activities, especially boating.
Thanks Jeff and Christiana for hosting us!
Good to know:
-Unless you are have a boat there is no access to the river via the dock on the property. You must walk upstream or downstream from the property and find a safe spot to walk down the bank for river access to fish, float or swim.
-The bathrooms are clean enough, but don’t forget your shower shoes!
-The camping area is an open grassy lawn and is not private, but we were the only ones tent camping and the ground was very level.
-Christiana, the restaurant/bar manager, is extremely accommodating and was able to answer all of our questions.

The camping area is flat, grassy and open. We were the only tent campers so we chose to pitch our tent right under the walnut tree near the tables and fire pit.Bring your roasting sticks! A nice walk out on the dock. No swimming, fishing or floating off the dock due to an unsafe current (be safe, kids don't float!), but the perfect place to breathe, think and watch the sun rise. We had a great time, but a couple of things to note. The river area and open grassy camping lawn were lovely, and we very much appreciate the host’s clear instructions before regarding bathroom access and remembering bug spray! However, one thing was less than clear /somewhat misleading from the listing saying we would have fire access- there was only ONE shared firepit for the entire camp/tent area, which was already taken by the time we arrived. The residents of the RV park were very friendly, as were our camping neighbors in sharing their stove, but had it not been for them, we would have needed to haul our supplies to cook dinner at a communal pit on the other side of the property by the dock. Overall a good experience, but make sure to plan accordingly regarding the fire!

We had a wonderful stay at Lovey's! Jeff was so helpful and friendly and made us feel welcome and comfortable. The directions to the tent camping area were very clear, and there was a sign there too. It was clean, quiet, and spacious. We had a perfect evening of stargazing next to the campfire.
