Set up your tent and enjoy 40 acres of beautiful mountain prairie dispersed tent camping on this private homestead. The stargazing will blow you away as there is zero light pollution. Hike into the property from the parking lot and camp as close or as far away as you'd like! This area is hike-in only from the parking lot and covers the majority of the property. If you want to drive your vehicle (any size) to your camp then check out our listing for the Vehicle Camping area of the property!
Possible animals, plants, and crawlies you MAY rub elbows with (or at least spot from a distance): Elk, cows, coyotes, javelina pigs, bobcats, pack rats, pronghorn antelope, goats, prairie dogs, mountain lion, rattlesnakes, owls, ravens and hawks. Juniper, various cacti, rabbit brush, various beautiful flowers, "cowboy toilet paper," goathead thorns. Scorpions and various spiders and the usual suspects. Everything in its season, of course. :) DON'T LET THIS LIST SCARE YOU! Just keep an eye out and be responsible with your food and garbage, and keep your children and pets under your supervision and control...
Bring a flashlight for those nighttime trips to the restroom. It's a Porta-John style restroom and it's much nicer than you'd expect. :) There are solar lights inside but you'll need a backup light for those times when it doesn't charge very well. With no electricity or lights throughout the property, walking around in the dead of night is like stumbling through inky blackness. So bring some reliable lighting with you!
Always check the weather at zip code 86320 before coming. We are open all year during any weather (excepting emergencies) so you are responsible for making sure the weather forecast is compatible with your camping expectations! Weather considerations: during windy days prepare to pay special attention to anchoring things like tents, tables, and shade canopies. When rain is in the forecast it can get very muddy out here very fast. So if you see that rain is a possibility, be prepared for that. :)
The campground host lives on the property on a small homestead. This is where you will check-in and where you can pick up water and firewood. Drinking water is available to purchase in gallon jugs. Firewood is also available for sale or you are welcome to cut up any of the fallen trees on the property for free. And don't be afraid to ask for help if you forgot something you need! Did you forget your propane water boiler? Did you leave behind your little charcoal grill? Did you suddenly realize you forgot to pack your flashlight? If you realize you're lacking some kind of essential then ask the host! There is a possibility he has something you can borrow while you're visiting! **Please be aware that there is NO trash pickup at this time for the campground so be prepared to pack out what you bring in. :) Any dumpsters you may see on your way in are privately owned by other people and are not for our use. :) ** Also The Spark is a private homestead - there are no hookups for RVs. This is a boondocking experience. :)
Available for rent RIDICULOUSLY CHEAP are 4-person pop-up tents with tarp footprints, 6 foot folding utility tables, and 10 x 10 feet shade canopies. Everything comes with extra long heavy duty ground stakes. Styles and availability are limited and vary from hour-to-hour throughout each day.
After checking in, the host will show you the access to the property. From there, just wander the property to find your perfect camping spot and enjoy the sun and the stars! There are no designated roads or paths in the camping area so "Choose Your Own Adventure!" Leave a note about your experience in our Guest Book while you're here, and thanks for choosing A Spark in the Dark Private Campground!
(Check-in and check-out times are NOT strict. But out of respect for other campers enjoying the evening we encourage you to arrive before sunset. It would also be very difficult for you to choose a location and set up in the total blackness of night out here)

Wow! I don't even know where to begin.
Clifford was a welcoming and helpful host. His directions were super easy to follow, and we found the place without issue. This place really made you feel that you were in the middle of nowhere, because you pretty much are! The property was beautiful and there was so much space to choose from when setting up our campsite. We had more gear than your standard backpacker (we normally do car camping) so we didn't want to wander too far out into the property, but even our semi close spot was extremely quiet and very private. There's plenty of space to choose your perfect spot, and lots of bushes and little trees for shade. Oh and Clifford upgraded the tent toilet to a trailer toilet, so nice!
Our first night there, we were welcomed by a pack of howling coyotes! They seemed pretty close, but didn't bother us at all, they just passed through. We didn't actually see any, only heard their howls as they went through. It was such a magical experience! There's also a family of ravens that live nearby, so we got to watch them play and fly and talk to each other. It was very entertaining! Our second night, lying in our tent, we smelled something distinctly skunky walk by. I don't know if it was a skunk, or someone that got sprayed, but either way we were glad to be in our tent! All that to say, definitely keep a clean and food-free camp because there is a lot of wildlife out there! So if you like wildlife viewing (or hearing, or smelling) opportunities, this is a great place to stay. Oh! And the stargazing! We had to wake up early after the full moon set to be able to truly enjoy it, but WOW what a sky! Millions upon millions of stars!
Anywho, long story short, we definitely recommend Clifford's property. We had so much fun, and even rekindled a little romance while we were there! It truly is a spark in the dark!
Peaceful, quiet & friendly!
It was incredibly private, untouched & peaceful. Zero light pollution made for amazing star gazing. It’s important to note that there isn’t running water so bring your own...but Clifford sells gallons of you forget. Clifford is a delight and very helpful & has a great energy. I plan to go back when it’s warmer. I picked a time of year that is a bit too cold for me. The toilet is really useable & it’s not a gross port-o-potty type toilet. Bring what you want to clean your hands too...no water. :)
Amazing host! wonderful location
This place was just what we needed after 3 days on the road not being able to find a single spot.
It's secluded and quiet! Plenty of shrubs/small trees to find shade under. The night sky can't be beat and the sunrises and sunsets are something to not be missed.
Clifford is a fabulous host! Attentive and helpful. Like someone else mentioned his VIBE is just so contagious! We are so grateful to him!
If your looking for a peaceful camping trip with an amazing view check out this place first !!! Clifford was amazing! I loved visiting his site! We will def be back!! We had a family emergency and unfortunately had to leave early but Clifford was super understanding about the whole thing ! Thank you Clifford! We can’t wait to be back soon!
First time using hipcamp 100% loved
Cliffs the man! If you're a free spirit and down to earth, you'll fit right in here! Great place to escape, have bon fire and stare up at the beautiful arizona sky. The camping experience included gathering your own wood for you go getters. He also has fire wood available for sale for you relaxers. Highly recommend this camping experience to anyone who enjoys the outdoors and absolute serenity.
A perfect space for transformation.
A perfect location: easy access yet remote. Beautiful nature, perfect site. Clifford was a most excellent host, warm, kind, informative and professional. When you've brought everything with you for primative camping, all one could ask for is a loo in a trailer! Highly recommend the site!
Peace and quiet, plenty of firewood around and an incredible star-gazing location. The dirt access road was flat and dry during our stay so our little 2wd car had no difficulties accessing the site.
