For generations, this stretch of land where the Judith River empties into the Missouri has been a gathering place—for Indigenous peoples, for the Corps of Discovery, and for the ranchers and explorers who followed. It still draws people to it in a way that is hard to explain until you are standing at the confluence, looking upstream. American Prairie has built three small huts here—each distinct, each anchored to a chapter of this place's story. They are comfortable without being fancy; the design intentionally keeps your attention outside, where it belongs. The surrounding landscape rewards curiosity: the Big Sag, a vast open depression visible from the property; miles of biking and hiking roads; Judith Landing State Park downstream; and the White Cliffs section of the Wild and Scenic Missouri River Breaks—one of the most dramatic landscapes in Montana—accessible by river float. In September and October, bull elk gather in the river bottoms and their bugles carry through the dawn. As cows move through the golden cottonwood corridors, it provides one of the best elk-viewing opportunities in the region.Located high above the Missouri River valley on American Prairie's PN property, the Founders Hut has views of numerous Central Montana mountain ranges. Two track roads are ideal for hiking, biking, and winter cross-country skiing. The hut contains: a kitchen with propane oven, cook stove, solar-powered refrigerator, and dish basins for washing dishes. 4 bunk rooms with a total of 9 twin beds. A living space with a propane heating stove and solar powered air conditioning. A short walk outside is an outhouse with a vault toilet. The yurt is accessible by a high-clearance 4WD vehicle in dry conditions through October 23, 2026 and via 6.75 mile hike, bike, or ski through the end of the season.

Founders Hut on PN

Amazing yurts on an amazing landscape. As long as it doesn't rain it is a pretty easy drive to get there. Do need a higher clearance vehicle for the rutted out roads that is the worst just before the yurts. The yurts are huge and the indoor bathroom is a plus. Plenty of space for everyone. Everything seemed to work great from all of the lights, ceiling fans, propane stove/oven and propane fireplace. The outdoor area (picnic table and solo stove) was ok. We didn't use it but it seemed fine. Absolutely worth it in every way!

Founders Hut on PN

The views around Founders Hut are among the most special in the world. What an incredible treat to be able stay on this land. It feels like you have been transported back 200 years - the whole area tingles with magic. The hut itself is lovely, too. Highly, highly recommend staying here! Thank you to American Prairie for the massively important work they are doing to restore this ecosystem to its former glory! And for sharing it with all of us :)
