The Shawnee National Forest surrounds us, accessible only by wandering roads, passing over creeks and alongside wineries. The trip is worth the beautiful drive, eventually arriving at "The Villa". Our home looks like an Italian villa, appropriately placed between two wineries in the middle of the Shawnee Forest. It is actually a straw-bale home with supplemental solar energy. Originally built as a Holistic Healing Center, we have converted it into a comfortable home with great vibes. We have converted an old grain bin into a "GrainZebo" just outside our home as a fun place to hang out with friends and family. We hope you enjoy the same relaxed feel we get while living out here in the woods, when you come visit. We will be happy to help you feel at home out here. We love sharing the Shawnee experience and believe all should enjoy this beautiful part of the country. LGBTQ are all welcome and accepted. We welcome all types of campers.

Beautiful, well spaced traditional private campsites **without electricity**. (Scroll down to Wine Trail Wilderness 30 Amp Electric if you need electric hookups). Wine Trail Wilderness is located in the heart of the Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois. It is actually part of the Ozarks, but in Illinois! We are conveniently situated between a couple of the finest wineries on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail. Hickory Ridge Winery is only a quarter mile South and Pomona Winery is North about a half mile. We have 37 acres of forest and open field to camp right off Hickory Ridge Road near the "town" of Pomona, Illinois. Little Grand Canyon, Snake Road at La Rue Pine Hills, Pomona Natural Bridge and Oakwood Bottoms are close by for hiking.  There are 9 other wineries on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail as well. Five of those wineries are within 10-15 minutes of the Wine Trail Wilderness campsite. This is a great place to relax, unwind, share a bottle of wine and totally decompress. At night, enjoy stargazing along with a peaceful crackling campfire.  The Mississippi River is only 8 miles away and we enjoy lots of migratory birds, making it a great area for bird-watching. We're happy to say that we've been voted Number One Hipcamp in Illinois two years in a row! Forbes magazine also included us in their list of top Hipcamps to camp out. 2024 we were voted 2nd place as Best Hipcamps in Illinois! We'd love to have you come out and experience Southern Illinois wine country!

Four available electric sites with 30 amp hook-ups. Availability is limited on some holiday weekends and special events. Check with us first to be sure. Electric sites are located close to the outhouse for easy access. The Grainzebo has a 12' x 72' professional bocce court next to it that can be played on by anyone from 9am to 9pm.

My husband and I loved our stay at Wine Trail Wilderness! Jon was so thoughtful during our stay (he replaced the makeshift stakes we made out of sticks with actual stakes when we were out exploring the trails nearby) and accommodating when our initial ETA changed a few times. The tent campsites were thoughtfully spaced out to provide plenty of privacy and it was a beautiful spot with lots of outdoor activities nearby. We did not have any cell reception at the campsite which we loved as it was a great opportunity to unplug and just appreciate our surroundings. I would recommend staying here to any of my friends/family that enjoy camping as this was a favorite stay of ours.

Wonderful accommodations and great host! Jon was so friendly and helpful. The property was nice, clean, and well-kept. I love that the camp was environment-friendly. The bocce court was great and the kids loved playing on it. I would definitely recommend and would come back if our travels take us back to the area!

Very friendly host! The layout was great! I recommend scheduling early and reserving the gazebo bocce court site. Very discreet and pretty location not to mention the wineries. Good job, Jon and Carla.

Jon was an amazing host, fun to chat with, and provided water included with the site. Site had a fire pit with grill and a bin for wood/trash. The firewood plus kindling for sale was a great value.

Best Hipcamp I've Ever Stayed At!

Wine Trail Wilderness is a really beautiful location, but, frankly, so are a lot of Hipcamp sites. What makes WTW stand out head and shoulders above all the other Hipcamps I've stayed at is Jon's amazing attention to detail. He is obsessive about making sure that every camper has the experience HE would want to have if he were the camper... and he has thought of EVERYTHING. For instance, if you order firewood, it's waiting for you at your campsite in a rain-proof footlocker, with kindling, paper, and a butane firestick! And fresh water is waiting for you in a 10-gallon water cooler... with ice in it! These are just two of a dozen examples I could give of the little details Jon has thought of in order to make every camper's experience the best it can be. WTW will be a regular stop for us from here on out! Thank you, Jon.

We had a great time camping at Wine Trail Wilderness. We loved the spacious sites, shady, level sites, situated far apart from other campers. The composting toilet was very clean and well maintained. Jon provided delicious, ice cold well water, checked in frequently, and gave us good information on local sites and hiking trails. He could not have been nicer. We highly recommend Jon’s property.

Perfect camping spot! Jon was welcoming to our family and pup. We got in late and Jon set a fire so our small one wasn’t cold. Much appreciated! Instead of a packed campsite, we had room to spread out. We will be back again.

This is our second year at Wine Trail Wilderness Hip Camp. We love it. The land is beautiful, quiet and so expertly maintained, we plan to go every year. It’s close to the Little Grand Canyon which we love to hike. Jon’s an excellent host and his attention to detail is remarkable.

We loved tent camping at Jon’s! The area was beautiful and very well maintained. They were kind enough to have water and firewood available and even had an outhouse conveniently located to our site. There were many thoughtful touches, you could tell they took pride in providing a great experience. Our dogs loved the opportunity to explore the big field, and we loved the opportunity to try some local wine from the winery next door. We would definitely stay here again!

It was a great experience the first time, so we came back. The hosts are warm and welcoming, and we love hiking through the fields with our dogs. It is a little off the beaten path but worth the drive. Quiet and private. If you are driving between the Southeast and the Midwest or the Northwest, this is a great place to stop.

I can't say enough good things about Wine Trail Wilderness. Jon and Carla are excellent hosts and took excellent care of our group when we were there. The whole vibe of the place is excellent and it's obvious they care about the happiness of their guests. Everything is well thought out, from the layout and privacy of each site down to smallest detail. I highly recommend staying there. I guarantee you won't be disappointed!!!!!

The hiking club I'm a member of stayed at the Grainzebo site and we couldn't be more happy!!! Jon and Carla are simply the best. They accommodated a large group, basically catered to our needs and offered tips and suggestions on what to do and see in the area. The vibe at Wine Trail Wilderness is indescribable, great falls short of of our experience. Highly recommend and can't wait to get back. Keep up the great work!!!!

From the first communications, throughout the nearly week long stay, to the departure, Jon was extremely pleasant, helpful and professional. He set up our own compost ports-toilet, refilled water, and made sure us ladies were comfortable. The dogs appreciated the field area for play. The location was quiet and peaceful.

I came in a warmer night in February so I had the place myself. Jon was a laid back and friendly host. His land is well maintained and the compost toilet is very clean and has a window for a view of the woods. I ordered a bottle of wine and Jon even brought me a wine glass and opener from the house to open it. I definitely would recommend and come back!

my pup and i were stopping through on a road trip and it was a lovely place to rest! jon was wonderful and responded right away, offering to stay up late to welcome us. and the trees and woods all around were gorgeous. definitely recommend !

Great sites and great hosts! John was super helpful and accommodating, taught us how to play bocce ball on the court there, and even helped us with a maintenance issue on my camper. The grainzebo was awesome!!! Can't wait to go back.

Our experience at Wine Trail Wilderness was great despite plunging temperatures this past weekend. The roomy site allowed for our 2 young dogs to zoom around the field and the pavilion and outhouse were experiences of themselves. Jon was a great host and fun to talk to when he was walking his dog Norton. The location between 2 of our favorite wineries was a bonus. The scenery with the fall colors was beautiful to see. It was fantastic camping on Jon’s land he was the perfect host, very attentive and was willing to work with our schedule. It made for a great weekend of climbing at holy boulders… it’s like 15min from the boulders!
