Welcome to Gibson City, a unique and vibrant community in Ford County, Illinois, known for its rich agricultural heritage and friendly atmosphere. With a population of approximately 3,407 as recorded in the 2010 census, Gibson City is affectionately nicknamed “The Big Little City.” Strategically located at the crossroads of IL Routes 9, 47, and 54, this city serves as a hub for the surrounding agricultural industry. The Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley (GCMS) School District reflects the community spirit, uniting the towns of Gibson City, Melvin, and Sibley to provide quality education for local children. Gibson City has a fascinating history that dates back to 1869 when Jonathan B. Lott purchased and platted the area. By 1870, he established a home and a post office, paving the way for several stores and a grain elevator. The name "Gibson" honors Lott's wife, Margaret Gibson Lott, and the addition of "City" came later through the post office department. The arrival of the Gilman, Clinton and Springfield Railroad and the Chicago and Paducah Railroad in 1871 spurred growth, leading to the village's incorporation in 1872.
