Your own private, gated 1-acre paradise.
This secluded hilltop retreat sits in the driftless region of Jo Daviess County, offering privacy, beauty, and sweeping views.
Until now, we have kept it as a private camping retreat for friends and family.
Now available to the public.
Ideally located just 25 minutes from Galena or Savanna, and only 10 minutes from Stockton, Elizabeth, or Hanover, it’s the perfect base for exploring the area. From the moment you pull out of the hidden driveway to begin your adventures, you’ll be greeted by some of the most scenic landscapes in the county.
Just 5 minutes away you’ll find Massbach Winery and Big Sky Nature Area.
On-Site Features
• Hammock, multiple seating areas, and a firepit with supplied wood
• Professional stainless steel gas grill provided (bring your own 16oz disposable green propane canisters)
• Two-stall changing room with camp sink (filled prior to your stay)
• Two hanging camp shower bags + 7-gallon supply of fresh water
• Small former livestock shed for temporary storage of bikes or gear (not weatherproof)
Camping Options
The site is suitable for Class B campers, primitive camping, or small clamshell trailers.Welcome to The Sanctuary. Minutes away yet worlds apart. And all for the price it costs to park downtown for 180 minutes You're private hilltop campsite completely hidden from the outside world.
Whether you choose to relax on the hammock by day or sit by the firepit at night, you will be emerged in total peace and privacy. Centrally located in Jo Daviess County, you are only 25 minutes from Galena or Savanna and only 10 minutes from Stockton, Elizabeth, Hanover or Apple River. Imagine feeling totally alone in the wilderness yet being able to have breakfast or lunch delivered directly to your camper via The Pit Stop in Stockton and their always available delivery service, anything is possible. Breakfast in bed, check. Lunch delivered to your hammock, no problem. Later, simply relax the evening away by the firepit using the locally harvested wood provided for you. Do you prefer cooking yourself ? Feel free to bring your untensils and dine in using the stainless full-size grill located on site. (Adapted to fit 16oz green disposable propane cannisters. Please supply your own) There is also a 2 stall changing station/ camp shower including a camp sink which will be filled prior to your arrival. Each booking will also be provided with 7 gallons fresh softened filtered water which will be delivered prior to your arrival. For cyclists or other visiting sportsmen, there is a small weather resistant but NOT fully waterproof utility shed with lockers on site that can be used to shelter bicycles or other gear. (Did I mention that the most scenic gravel cycling road in the state is a 10 minute bike ride away from the site.) There is also a mulched path that leads to one of several relaxation areas we have created for you. You have likely stayed at many forgettable hotels in your life. You won't forget your stay at The Sanctuary. We provide the space, you create the memory.
Since we know you will be curious when you see them, on the campsite, there is also a "work in progress" abandoned cabin that will be turned into a clubhouse for guest use as time allows. In the future we are also considering adding a sCOOL bus as a separate sleeping quarters. It is also a "work in progress"you may see located on site.
