I should've known we would have issues when I messaged Emily 2 days early asking if she knew where we could buy firewood. She suggested Lowe's and then asked if we'd been there yet because she was worried it was too overgrown. Our directions stated a small curb to go over before arriving at the property. It was an actual curb on the street, with a sidewalk. The property is also in the middle of a terrible part of town so we were unable to just park on the road. We drove through the property as much as we could in our SUV. It was so overgrown with small trees and weeds we couldn't get anywhere. There was also trash, concrete pieces, and old tires everywhere. We couldn't even stay the night. I told Emily we'd have to leave and couldn't stay and she simply agreed that it was overgrown. HORRIBLE experience.
I think the entrance to the property needs some better labeling and directions because there are 2 areas that could be mistaken as the “entrance”. I booked this campsite for 2 nights and upon arrival we made the decision to not drive my buddies sedan over the curb. We were trying to find a spot to park his car on the street and we had multiple locals warn us that parking cars on the street in the area is dangerous. Luckily Emily was super helpful and let us park next to her private residence.
We loaded up my Jeep and headed for the entrance. We hopped the curb and started driving into the woods. The path to the campsite was very overgrown with grass and tree limbs. My jeep got some new scratches over the weekend which isn’t a big deal but if your protective of your paint you may want to think twice. We were only able to make it .25 mile back into the woods at the most due to the trail being too overgrown to drive through. Throughout the night be heard at least 30 gunshots from all types of guns. They sounded very close to where we were and it was pretty sketchy. Around 3am we heard a dog barking in our direction extremely close to our tents. Luckily it went away quickly but it sure did startle us. There’s also a train that passes really close by and you will definitely hear it when it does.
First time using hipcamp so maybe this was an issue of mismatched expectations. I do not recommend arriving to this listing after dark unless you are looking for a bravery challenge or filming Walking Dead cosplay. For me, the site did not meet expectations bc when i finally figured out where the entrance was, i was only able to navigate through the screeching brush about 20 yards before the road was impassible w saplings. My plan was to sleep in the back of the car and this was still too close to the main road to feel comfortable. The property is next to an unfinished overgrown subdivision which is both fascinating and spooky AF. Emily was friendly and attentive.
This is a great spot with quick access to Red Mountain. My wife and i loved it. It's literally an island of Wisteria saturated woods in the middle of a neighborhood in west Birmingham. The only catch is that there is currently not an area to turn a camper trailer around. I own a 15' Aliner and a Travel Valet so i was able to trun my camper around manually. Another alternative would be to use a wench to turn your camper around but that can be dicey. In either case i would not recommend a camper greater than 15' in length at this time. There is also a muddy patch that i would not recommend passing unless you have 4wd. If those two qualifications don't scare you off then this is a great spot! If all your doing is parking your car and pitchimg a tent then this area is golden. My wife and i will be back for sure.
