Nearly wild camping on a farm in rural West Wales

Rural Camping is the perfect name for this campsite deep in the countryside of West Wales. It neatly sums up what’s on offer here and it does so simply and without fuss. That’s the kind of camping you can expect too. It’s a no-nonsense, back-to-basics place to put your tent up with no set pitches and 14 acres to explore. Okay, so there are a couple of pre-pitched bell tents too; but even if you choose to stay in one of those, you can expect a proper camping experience—albeit with a made-up bed.

The bell tents are off grid and, of course, there’s no electricity to whichever far-flung corner you choose to pitch your tent in, so come prepared and don’t forget your torch. Your host here is David and, on arrival, he’ll explain the lay of the land. Stay up top to be near the facilities or head down lower to pitch closer to the stream. With no one clustered together, this is not really a camp “site” at all, but concessions to campsite traditions do, of course, exist. Namely in the provision of a loo and shower. There’s also a field shelter with seating on bales and a log-burning pizza oven.

Those little luxuries are welcome but they don’t take away from the fact that this is a wildish site. Out here it’s proper countryside and, with that in mind, it’s worth mentioning that while the surrounding fields are full of farmers’ cows and sheep, friendly host David’s main business is breeding and training gun dogs. If you’re interested, he might even give you a demo of their skills.

He’ll also be happy to share his local knowledge if you’re wanting to explore. The site is just outside the tiny village of Cwrt-Newydd. There’s no pub or shop within walking distance but those things, and plenty more, are not too far away. Lampeter is less than 15 minutes’ drive, the coast is 20 minutes and the wooded walks and mountain biking of Brechfa Forest are 30 minutes south. None too fa—but none too near either.

14 acres at the end of a farm track lots of fields to explore with a stream at the bottom not near any roads bbq/ fire pits wood burning pizza oven and a sheltered area with a wood burning pizza oven, dog friendly, on site toilet and shower block , twenty minutes drive from the beach where you can see dolphins

Rural camping
A quiet, idyllic spot for camping
A very peaceful campsite with good facilities (clean loo, shower, washing up area). We enjoyed it a lot. We were really lucky with the weather, but should it have rained or been windy then there is a good-sized covered area for sheltering from the elements.

Weekend break for me and the dog
David was really helpful and accommodating. He and his partner came and found me when I got lost! Plenty of space for me and the dog in David's field. Really useful covered area for cooking or just being.

From the host
At the end of a farm track, with 14 acres of land and a stream at the bottom. No cars or traffic to worry about, a 20 minute drive from the beach, set in beautiful countryside, dog friendly, free parking and Cctv security. We have lots of field to explore, wood pizza ovens and a sheltered area with a wood pizza oven BBQ / fire pit
Nearby attractions

Guests at Rural Camping are welcome to splash about in the stream and have access across the site’s 14 acres. The site is about seven miles away from the market town of Lampeter where there’s shops, eateries and a small museum. In the other direction, is the coast. Head to New Quay (12 miles) for traditional seaside fun and facilities or to Cwmtydu Cove (13 miles) for a peaceful wander on the beach and the chance of seeing seals. Further south, Llangrannog (15 miles) is a quiet spot with some facilities and Penbryn (16 miles) is a particularly pretty beach, reached via a short wooded walk. Brechfa Forest, for mountain biking trails and walking, is about 30 miles away. Both the western edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park and the northern tip of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park are about 45 minutes’ drive.

Food and drink

Rural Camping is, as it sounds, pretty rural with no particularly easy-to-reach options nearby. Lampeter is seven miles away and there you’ll find supermarkets to stock up on and a range of places to eat out including The Black Lion and The Royal Oak, both of which do food. For a bite to eat in New Quay with views of the sea, try The Blue Bell bistro and deli.
