Camping with 'en-pitch' facilities on a working farm that produces the finest homemade ice-cream for miles

The great thing about camping on farms is that there’s usually acres of space and oodles of rural scenery. The downside can be shared facilities that are a little on the rustic side. But over at Cowpots Camping, they are offering farm camping like you’ve never seen it before. An on-site pizzeria and ice cream parlour and 'en-pitch' toilets and showers make sure of that.

The 20 pitches at Cowpots are spread across 18 acres and separated into three fields. Choose a pitch in the biggest one, Tree Field, and in addition to your own private loo and shower, you also get a handy covered kitchen shelter. This field is car-free and the mower has been put to good use here; not only making paths between pitches, but also a grassy labyrinth and an area for ball games and generally hooning about. There’s yet more space for that in an additional 20 acres of fields and 40 acres of woodland that are open for campers to explore. There's a fallen oak to clamber on, hedgerows to follow and a stream to splash about in. Good old fashioned fun that can be capped off by a nightly campfire. Stock up on logs and marshmallows at the honesty shop on the way back to your campfire pit then settle back for sunset, s’mores and satisfied smiles.

Accessed via a farm track, the Cowpots meadows are safely tucked away for children to run wild (though it is still a working farm so be aware of tractors) and offer wonderful views of the Preseli Mountains. Though you can’t see the sea, it’s only a short drive away. Vast Pendine Sands is one of the closest beaches. It’s aided by lifeguards in summer and an excellent spot to swim, while Amroth beach is similarly close and has excellent rock pools to poke around in on the western end. Both are good places to pick up the famous Pembrokeshire Coast Path, too, for a walk along the dramatic waterfront that this part of Wales affords. It’ll all neatly work up the appetite again for your return to the farm where The Cowpots Cowshed serves up wood-fire-cooked pizzas along with their homemade, renowned Jersey ice-cream.

Our 2nd visit to Cowpots and have stayed on the top track and in Tree Field. Can't decide where we'll book for next year as both were wonderful. We love the campsite, the enormous pitches, the pizzas and the great beaches and kids activities. This time we treated ourself to the spa - hot tub/sauna with a view - and so loved it. Think we might have to make that a regular camping thing - was great even in the rain!

We absolutely loved our 2nd trip to Cowpots. Pitch was spacious and clean, really liked having a shelter with large table and benches. Compost loo was easy to use (even with a 5yr and 3yr old in tow!) with clear instructions for check out. We also loved our outdoor shower. Hosts are friendly and approachable, and we really enjoyed our pizza from the cowshed! Thank you so much, we'll be back soon!

We stayed at cowpots farm for four nights. We loved the spacious pitch and the cabins with our own hot showers and toilets. my boys (12 and 2) loved running around and even helped taking things to and from the pitch with the wheelbarrows. The views were beautiful. The pizzas and the icecreams from the restaurant were fantastic. Martin was very helpful. We loved our stay and hope to come back next year.

Cowpots campsite was brilliant, each pitch was massive and the private shower/loo huts were great. Our kids loved walking down into the woods, playing in the stream and running round the grass labyrinth. The pizzas and ice cream at the Cowshed were the added bonus on top.

A truly magical and perfect campsite. Only a short drive away from a beautiful quiet beach that never was busy. The pizza are a real gem and we managed to have i twice while staying. This is camping at its best if you like somewhere peaceful and with plenty of space. We will def be back.

This campsite is excellent. The pitches are very big with amazing views of the Welsh countryside. The ensuite facilities are great especially having your own hot shower! Cowpots is well positioned, only 20mins from Tenby, Saundersfoot, and other beaches. They also have an onsite pizzeria which makes its own ice cream. We will definitely be returning here.

Lovely, well kept and well laid out site with loads of space allocated to each pitch. Individual shower and eco-loo pods with wash up facilities were great. Great dog runs on fields and through trees. On site wood-fired pizzas were delicious, as was the ice cream and Welsh beers and ciders. Really friendly and professionally run, we loved being there and will definitely be back!

We had 7 nights at Cowpots in early September and it was absolutely fantastic! We had Frisky pitch and the views were stunning. In light of Covid, the huge pitches are perfect and we had so much space and peace and quiet. The compost loo was a first for us but was no problem to use and the shower was lovely and warm. Spending star filled nights sitting round the fire pit was a relaxing end to the day and a real treat. The surrounding area is full of things to do and we had the perfect mix of days out and chilled days on the farm. Wood fire pizza is a must because it is super fresh and delicious!! The Cowshed is beautiful and the perfect place to enjoy your meal along with a crisp Welsh cider. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Cowpots and would certainly recommend to anyone looking for an off-grid, tranquil camping experience. We will be back! Thanks to our hosts who were warm and friendly and keen to make sure we had everything we needed. The perfect escape from a busy life and a much needed bit of R&R.

My family and I stayed her on the last weekend before the children went back to school and it was the perfect end to a great summer. We stayed on Finch with some friends staying next door on Sunset and both pitches were huge. The on suite loo and shower were a brilliant feature to have and the undercover area was great too. We explored some of the surrounding woods and found a great little field with lots of Christmas trees!! The pizza and ice cream were fantastic too. All in all a great place to visit.

My girlfriend and I booked this pitch as a simple get away for two days to spend some time together away from civilisation. We loved the walks around the site and loved the site as a whole as it’s off the grid and in a lovely area. We enjoyed the whole eco experience as it was our first time, and it won’t be our last and we will 100% love to come back to your site as it offers everything and more for a good camping holiday in wales.

Cowpots is a Brilliant campsite with ensuite shower and loo, in a fab location only 15 minute drive from some lovely beaches! Dog friendly, child friendly (lots of children making friends on an old fallen oak tree) and knackered parent friendly - a perfect ‘chill’ break away to relax and unwind off grid for a while. The Wonderful pizza and ice-cream (and Welsh cider) on site is perfection! Blackberry picking on the lanes and fields too were fab to have with toasted waffles back at the van. Just the perfect, chilled end to Summer we needed! Thanks for having us - we’ll definitely return.

We love this area of Wales, numerous sandy beaches nearby but still doesn’t get overcrowded in the summer. It was our first experience camping in Pembrokeshire and Cowpots was a huge hit! We loved the peace and quiet, the huge pitch and en-pitch facilities. So special to look out at the trees while enjoying a hot shower. The pizza and ice cream were the icing on our arrival day after setting up. We would recommend Cowpots to anyone and thank the brilliant owners for making it such a wonderful place.

We checked in on a Saturday and I was amazed at the size of our plot on thyme. We never officially met anyone who worked here and that was fine with me. Facilities where all clean and we really enjoyed the campfire. My daughter loved playing on the tree, finding ladybirds and just generally enjoying the great outdoors as kids do. I would reccomend both the pizza and ice cream which where delicious. We watched shooting stars with toasted marshmallows whilst having quality family time and meeting other families doing the same. Tenby is a short drive as are many other attractions which makes this place a nice base. Although we really enjoyed just hanging out on site relaxing. I would definitely recommend this site and would stay here again myself.

We stayed for 4 nights in august on Betty in a campervan. The site is brilliant, children were all able to play with each other in the middle of the field. The pitches were huge and the en-suite loo and shower were really clean (lovely hot water!!). Pizzas and ice cream gorgeous too. The location is great for exploring. Would highly recommend.

On arrival this place has a definite chilled vibe about it.. we arrived in rain with teenagers in tow and the prospect of wheelbarrowing our kit to the pitch .. but the hazy smoke of campfires and friendly neighbours made it instantly welcoming The shower was fab and so nice not to do the queue or the early morning dash to get the hot water , the compost loo was an eye opener in how much loo roll we used as a family ! And the shelter was a life saver - so much so we are building a replica back home in our garden , we sat here near the fire playing board games, drinking wine and taking rubbish - perfect ! Unfortunately Covid and self isolating staff meant pizzas and ice cream were off the menu but we spent early evenings at nearby Pendine Sands where the Chinese Takeaway is quick and tasty and the beach wide, Sandy and dog friendly (to the left!) Whitland has friendly locals and all you need, we used the Co-op daily Would be ideal for younger kids to explore the maze and woodlands without the worry of traffic Hope to return again

We spent a great week on one of the campervan pitches. The site is lovely. It's really peaceful and each pitch has so much space, and are spaced well apart. There are fantastic views over the valley. There are so many nice touches that make camping there extra special. The dining shelter is brilliant and give you that extra bit of undercover space, as unfortunately one thing they can't control is the Welsh weather. Having your own shower and toilet is a very nice touch too. Don't be put off by the compost toilet it's cleaner and a lot less smelly than some sites I've stayed on. The site is on a hill but they have obviously put a lot of work into making sure the pitches are level and well drained. In a nutshell, Cowpots is the antithesis of over packed campsites it like luxury wild camping.

Definitely the best campsite we have ever stayed at, and we have visited a lot! Each pitch is HUGE and the Treefield also gives a lot of exploring space for adventurous children (and adults). Having your own loo and shower is also a great benefit. Not just because of 'Covid' times. No queuing or worrying that there are people waiting to go in after you. No wondering about the cleanliness of the facilities because you're in charge so you know it's clean. The shelter was another excellent bonus, offering some shade (we were there for the 3 extreme heat days) and a storage space. Plus having a table and benches provided means more room in the car. Firepit = winner for the children, making more marshmallow memories and learning about fire safety or criticising my fire building!! It is great to see a family creating this campsite for people to enjoy instead of monopolising on the space that is there. Other campsites would easily fit 3 pitches on the spot we had. The whole site is a joy to be on. There is a fridge and freezer to use and the walk is about half a mile (10 mins, if that) from the Treefield, a lovely cool morning walk with birdsong around you! Amroth beach is 12 mins drive. Quiet and the water was warm and clear when we visited. Go and have fun. See just what a campsite can be!

We spent six nights at Cowpots during the July heatwave! While it was a little too hot for comfort, we really loved the campsite and will definitely be coming back. We stayed on the top field, which has the most amazing views of the surrounding countryside. Unlike other sites which try to maximise space for profit, it was lovely to have such a large pitch to ourselves. We also enjoyed having our own shower, washing up and toilet facilities, although I will echo other reviews that the compost toilet does take a bit of getting used to! We had pizzas from the on-site shop which were delicious, and I also managed to sneak away one evening for a very relaxing yoga session. We would highly recommend this site - Amelia and Martin are very friendly and helpful, and there is just so much to see in the surrounding area that we will look forward to returning.

Situated on Pen Back Farm, Cowpots Camping offer 19 ensuite pitches for camping in the countryside. We call the lower camping field “Tree Field” because it has a beautiful fallen Welsh Oak tree in the middle of it. It is a huge 11-acre field, the same size as the roof that covers Wembley stadium! This field has only eight ensuite camping pitches and two ensuite campervan pitches. Accessed by a farm track and 600m away from the farm buildings you’ll be sure to find some peace and quiet in the countryside, surrounded by nature. On the Pembrokeshire-Carmarthenshire border, Cowpots Camping offers easy access to both counties. So, whether you're planning a Tenby boat ride, a visit to Laugharne Castle (01994 427906) or a walk on the beach in Llansteffan, the campsite is well placed. Amroth Beach and Pendine Beach are the closest beaches (less than 15 minutes by car) – the former is easily accessed from the road, the latter is a vast sand beach popular that's great for long walks. Llansteffan (30 minutes drive) has a lovely beach, too, as well as it's own impressive ruined castle, while the literature town of Llaugharne is home to the Dylan Thomas Boathouse (01994 427420), where the poet once lived. The National Trust-owned Colby Woodland Gardens (01834 811885; 15-minute drive) and the Stackpole Estate (30 minutes) are both close by, while the harbour town of Tenby has its fair share of history and a great beach too.
Food and drink
The Cowshed (01994 240790) is the farm's fully-licensed, family-run pizzeria and ice-cream parlour that serves the site's own hand-made, wood-fired pizzas and homemade Cowpots' Ice Cream. It's open to the public as well as campers and you can eat in or takeaway to your pitch if you prefer. For a local pub, The Station House (01994 240556) is directly opposite the train station in Whitland, less than two miles away, and The Alpha Inn (01834 831484) is up the hill and in Tavernspite (home to a delicious Sunday roast).
