High-end glamping on the farm in Perthshire

It might look like a little like a pigsty from the outside but this high-end glamping pod is nothing like it inside. In fact, with a full-sized bath, a king-sized bed, a hairdryer, and a TV, The Pigsty is more like a hotel room on the farm. It’s neat as a pin with a finish and facilities you’d be happy to have at home; a tiled bathroom, a velveteen sofa, good quality bed linens, and more. It’s situated in a field on a farm with excellent views across the Strathearn Valley, just seven miles outside of Crieff and a 20-minute drive from Perth.

Although it has hotel-style comfort, The Pigsty is a self-catering glamping cabin. It offers self-contained accommodation, which includes a kitchenette in the open-plan living and sleeping space as well as that rather luxurious bathroom. The pleasingly-curved walls are timber clad but it’s not what you’d call rustic inside. There’s a contemporary elegance to the furniture, fixtures and fittings but it still has a good connection to the outdoors as all good glamping should. French doors open onto a wide deck with a barbecue, chiminea, bistro seating – and those countryside views.

Evenings are lovely spent right here as you can watch the changing light in the sky but you are close enough to Crieff to enjoy a meal out too. The town is the capital of this region and is home to the Caithness Glass Visitor Centre and one of Scotland’s most famous whisky distilleries, Glenturret, home of Famous Grouse. It’s also a great base for outdoor activities and the hills in your view from the farm offer up some excellent walks. Get out and explore, safe in the knowledge that there’s hotel-style comfort waiting for you back at The Pigsty on a Perthshire farm.

The Pigsty sits on our family farm in rural Perthshire, with stunning and far-reaching views across the Strathearn Valley. The Pigsty is a short 10 minute drive from Crieff - a historic market town and a hub for tourism, 20 minutes from Perth, and an hour from both Edinburgh and Glasgow. It's an ideal retreat for those who are looking for a peaceful escape from the city, surrounded by beautiful countryside walks. It’s the perfect retreat for an escape to the country, or just an excuse to get away for a couple of nights of peace and quiet. The Pigsty includes: Shampoo and conditioner Breakfast WIFI Smart TV Torch BBQ Binoculars Oven with Grill Fridge with small inbuilt freezer Utensils, cutlery, glasses and plates Hair dryer Onsite parking Maps, Heating and hot water Towels and small hanging space Selection of board games Generously sized decked area with Chiminea. As parents we feel a night or 2 away is something of a special treat! So with this in mind we have made The Pigsty an adult only stay. As dog owners we love our furry friends! However we regret for a number of factors, no dogs are allowed at The Pigsty.

The Pigsty at South Ardbennie
Truffle in the Mud
This place was an incredible part of our trip to Scotland, not only because of the location and views, but also the hospitality and thoughtfulness of Fiona. Being greeted with everything you'll need, and more, my partner and I enjoyed everything this place had to offer, from morning coffee in the cafetiere, to our dinners on the patio, with the fire going, watching the sunset, this place is an absolute gem and if we decide to travel this far up again, we'll definitely be staying.

The Pigsty at South Ardbennie
Highlight of Our Trip!
I cannot say enough about our stay, it was INCREDIBLE!! Fiona was so lovely and created an oasis with everything you'd need or want. They had crafted the Pig Sty with such care and attention to all of the details. We had a place to cook meals, watch TV at night and just lounge. It had everything. Theyeven left us farm fresh snacks when we arrived which were amazing! It's seated on a beautiful farm area with amazing views of Scottish fields, close to hikes and a comfortable drive to historic sites and castles. It was truly a highlight of our trip staying there, we will definitely visit again and cannot recommend staying here enough to others! Many thanks to Fiona and the Pig Sty!

The Pigsty sits on our family farm in rural Perthshire, with stunning and far-reaching views across the Strathearn Valley. 2 guests x 1 bedroom x 1 bed x 1 bathroom The Pigsty is a short 10 minute drive from Crieff – a historic market town and a hub for tourism, 20 minutes from Perth, and an hour from both Edinburgh and Glasgow. It’s an ideal retreat for those who are looking for a peaceful escape from the city. The space Inside, The Pigsty offers a King-size bed with hypoallergenic bedding, a small kitchen with all the essentials you could need for a short stay, a full-size bath with a rainforest shower, a separate toilet, and a TV. WIFI and central heating are also available. Towels, bedding, and a selection of complementary toiletries are provided during your stay. The dome shape of The Pigsty, the reclaimed wood cladding, and the selection of luxury fabrics create a cosy atmosphere. This alongside the addition of a few mod cons gives The Pigsty a little home away from home magic. Moving outside, The Pigsty offers a spacious decked area with an outdoor dining set – providing the perfect spot to enjoy some alfresco dining or an evening G & T while you watch the sun going down in the evening. From the decking, you might see some of the local wildlife and it’s a prime spot for some evening star gazing on a clear sky night.
Nearby attractions

The Pigsty is seven miles outside the market town of Crieff (seven miles) within the Strathearn Valley, just south of the Highlands. There are some lovely walks around the town including the circular Lady Mary’s Walk on the banks of the River Earn. The Knock is a steep hill rising up from the Crieff Hydro Resort in town which is good for both mountain biking and walking. The resort also offers a range of other exciting adventures including horse riding, 4X4 and quad-biking trails and a high ropes course. Loch Turrett (13 miles away) offers more good waterside walking. If you’re a more serious hiker and you want to bag a munroe, head for Ben Chonzie (24 miles) or to Ben Vorlich (30 miles) on the edge of Loch Earn, the source of the River Earn. Golfers have plenty of choice nearby with Gleneagles one of the closest places to play, just 10 miles away. Innerpeffray Library, said to be the world’s oldest lending library, is open to visitors seven miles from site as is the neighbouring medieval church. There’s more history in a number of Roman sites nearby including the site of Ardunie Roman Watchtower which is a walk from the site in the village of St David’s (two miles) and a number of castles. Drummond Castle is closest (11 miles) and has amazing gardens and is followed by Sconce Palace (14 miles) built of red sandstone. The picturesque, riverside city of Perth is 13 miles from site. There are plenty of places to visit in and around the city including the Perth Museum, home to the Scottish crown jewels and the Stone of Destiny, which has been used in coronation ceremonies for more than 700 years.

Food and drink

To buy your own supplies to cook at The Pigsty, Crieff (seven miles) offers everything you might need with small supermarkets and lots of independent shops in the high street including Campbell’s Bakery and Fish in Crieff. For meat for the barbecue, you might prefer to head out of town to Hugh Grierson’s Farm Shop (five miles). Crieff is also the closest place to head to for a choice of places to eat out. Try Craobh-Kroov for traditional Scottish, Delvino’s Delicatessen and Wine Bar for mediterranean-inspired meals or G’s Bistro for French. There’s Thai, Nepalese and Indian restaurants too as well as a range of options at the Crieff Hydro Hotel. Chatni (eight miles) is another Indian restaurant that’s out of town but happy to deliver to the site. Your hosts are happy to recommend plenty of options in Perth as well.
