Dog-friendly camping on the edge of the Blackdown Hills

Buckland Farm Camping is almost as simple as it sounds. It’s a West Country farmer’s field that’s open for dog-friendly camping with views of the Blackdown Hills. And while the simplicity of this Somerset site may feed nostalgia for camping in days of yore, it’s actually a relatively new site, having opened for the first time back in 2022. There may be a few concessions to modern-day life (online booking for one) but nothing can take away from the fact that it’s the perfect place for the good old-fashioned family fun of holidays under canvas.

Once you’ve made your booking at Buckland Farm Camping, you’ll be given arrival instructions that will lead you off the M5 and down country lanes until you reach a gate into a field. It’s as simple as that. You let yourself in, pick your pitch from a selection of spots mown into the longer grass of this meadow…. and either wheelbarrow to your car free pitch or drive to your ‘drive-on’ pitch. Soon enough, Buckland Farm’s owners, Carol and Richard, will be round to say hello.

This flat, five-acre field is just a small part of their family farm, with arable and grazing land stretching in every direction. While simple enough, it’s been readied for campers with the addition of all that you need. There are composting loos, hot-water showers, a sheltered washing-up sink and a central shared area. Here, there are picnic benches, hay bales and an information point that’s undercover. It’s a great place for kids to play and, while the rest of the site is off grid, it offers power for the charging of phones — but perhaps don’t tell the kids that. If you’re a campfire fan, make sure to add a fire pit and picnic bench to your booking.

There’s a fenced doggy play-paddock on site, which makes this place particularly good for dog owners and there are plenty of places for walks. You can join a local bridleway to head for those Blackdown Hills or drive out to its well known beauty spots, like the Wellington Monument. Further afield, but not far, is the edge of Exmoor, The Quantock Hills and Cheddar Gorge. The north coast of Somerset and the south coast of Dorset are also close enough to visit with Minehead, Lyme Regis and Charmouth all popular spots to head for. In other words, some of the best of the west are within reach of this simple and unpretentious camping spot on the edge of the Blackdown Hills.

Campervan Grass Pitch Approx 14x12m
Our first time in our camper van
The site was perfect - quiet and not overcrowded pitches - great for our kids to wander in the knowledge that it was safe from cars and other dangers. Pitches were clean and well kept, as were the routes around the site. Brilliant tent with games, books, fire pit to hire and wood and ‘sun room’ with chargers and freezer. When we packed up this morning and realised our battery had died, the owners were straight over to help us out! Couldn’t fault our stay and will return!

Grass Tent Pitch - 14 x 12m approx
A beautiful campsite set in the AONB Blackdown Hills. Very easy to locate, especially with the hosts instructions. By far the best campsite showers & composting loos we have ever used! Carol and Richard are very friendly hosts, and despite the weather, were still able to accommodate us, with Richard using his tractor to tow us on and off site! 10/10 recommend! :D

Great campsite
Lovely quiet campsite, with lots of room. I enjoyed my stay in my campervan, Carol was very warm and welcoming, gave me lots of information on walks in the local area. There is a well equipment belltent, full of games and interesting things, great community space. The loos, showers, and washing up area, all really clean. A lovely campsite, I can't wait to go back.

Last minute escape!
Really lovely campsite, lovely area. Quiet and beautifully kept. Very clean facilities and lovely hot water! Great to have a secure dog pen. Plenty of space, not overlooked by other campers. Easy to get to and great position for walking and outdoorsy stuff! Really loved our last minute get away, thank you 😊

Definitely on the "come back" list
This was a beautiful spot. Mown pitches in a large field with lots of space. Seemed quite new, so facilities lovely and clean. Hot showers, clean loos. Very well cared for. Really nice touches - a bell tent with games for the children, and a well fenced field to let the dogs run free. Very quiet - just a couple of farm vehicles as they were carting after harvest. Beautiful clear skies with no light pollution. Children are already asking when we can come back.

From the host
WE ARE AT PRESENT having trouble linking our pitches to Hipcamp. Please message the owner to book in the meantime. Buckland Farm is in a beautiful area, at the foot of the Blackdown Hills - a very pleasant area to explore, whether by foot, bike, horse or car. Wouldn't you like to wake up in the morning, see the view of the hills, and plan your day's walking to the beautiful ancient woodland of Buckland Woods? ... If you want to explore - the campsite is 5 mins from the M5, so very easy access. The area has some wonderful things to see and do - there's the West Somerset Steam Railway nearby, or a Horse Drawn Barge. Alternatively, the County Town of Taunton is 15 mins away, hosting museums, shops, Somerset Cricket Club to name but a few. On site, there are 15 jumbo pitches (approx 12 x 14 metres) giving you plenty of space for gazebos, pup tents etc (no extra charge) or you are welcome to put up a dog 'fence/garden' for your furry friends. There is an off lead area for dogs - but please keep them on lead when not in this area. If you prefer to use your stay to relax, that's fine. Firepits are available to hire, and include a grill. Hot water is always available for sinks and showers. There are six composting loos with urinals, so there shouldn't be loo queues. The picnic and play area is central, and includes a large bell tent with tables and chairs, games and books, charging facilities for small gadgets. Also, there are freezers for ice packs, or food.
Nearby attractions

The Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty starts just across the road from the farm – it is great for walking, cycling and general exploration. A good place to start is the Wellington Monument, five miles from site, from where there are scenic walks and fabulous views. To the north the Quantock Hills and Exmoor National Park are both within reach (10 and 20 miles from site). For beaches head north to Minehead for traditional seaside fun or south to Lyme Regis where you can hunt for fossils, both are about a 45-minute drive. To reach Minehead you could hop aboard the West Somerset Railway (01643 704 996) in Bishop's Lydeard, ten miles from site. Or for a slower journey, head to Tiverton (16 miles away) to enjoy a horse drawn barge trip on the Tiverton Canal (01884 253345). The Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm Museum (01935 842600), Haynes Motor Museum (01963 440804), Wookey Hole Caves and Cheddar Gorge and are all within an hour of site.

Food and drink

For local produce, head to Rumwell Farm Shop (which also has a cafe), three miles down the road, perhaps stopping at The Milk Shed on the way back where a self-service vending machine dispenses milk straight from the farm. You won't want to miss the smoked meat, fish and cheese from Robinson's Smokehouse (01823 666205) either. It's just down the road in West Buckland, half a mile away, and offers takeaway pizzas on Friday nights (telephone in advance to check opening times). Wellington is the closest town, four miles down the road, and has a farmers' market on the  first and third Saturday's of each month. If your stay doesn't coincide with that, there's a weekly one in Taunton, five miles away, on Thursdays too. The Skylark (01823 618979) in Chelston and The World's End (01823 462928), in Bradford on Tone are family-friendly pubs within a 10-minute drive of site. It's a similar distance to The White Horse (01823 461239), also in Bradford on Tone but more traditional and comes recommended by your campsite hosts.
