Wild-ish but family-friendly camping and glamping on a canalside farm on the English-Welsh border

Dreaming of logging off, leaving the screens behind and escaping to a grassy meadow beside a quiet canal? perhaps letting the kids scamper barefoot through the field, clambering on logs and generally enjoying a bit of fresh air? It can happen. And we know a place with a punny name that fits the bill, smuggled away near the Wales-England border. What you're after is Wild ConTENTment.

It’s hard not to notice the emphasis on the 'TENT' aspect of this Shropshire site. It’s firmly focused on under-canvas stays – but that doesn’t mean you have to set up your own accommodation. In fact, there’s an even spread of camping and glamping here: three pitches for people with their own tents and two kitted-out bell tents – plus a single, quite-separate converted horse trailer. That’s just six pitches in total; the place is small on numbers but big on space, with the main camping meadow covering whopping 11 acres and set alongside a disused canal that's currently undergoing restoration. This all helps contribute to the “wild” at Wild ConTENTment.

The site is the brainchild of Susie and David on whose farm you’ll be staying. David’s family has been here for three generations, but it was only during the 2020 lockdown that they realised that sharing their space could spread a little happiness. And so they sought to offer a kind of wild camping experience – we say “kind of” as, although it’s off-grid and campfire-friendly, there are plenty of add-ons that smooth any rough edges. At the basic level, you can hire a pitch with a stone-circled fire pit and a compost loo. Next up, there’s a pitch with its own horse-box bathroom (called Beryl) complete with a flushing loo and a copper-roll top bath — it’s wild-ish camping with some serious bells on. And, if that’s not enough, there are the bell tents and Anneka the horse trailer for under-a-solid-roof, beds-are-made glamping.

For days out, there’s plenty to see on both sides of the border: waterfalls, lakes, Wroxeter, Shrewsbury, Ironbridge and Chester Zoo. If you don’t fancy getting back in the car, you can walk straight from the site to a pub, a nature reserve or you can join Offa’s Dyke Path and there's a fully stocked shop within half a mile. For activities, there’s kayaking on the Montgomery Canal and some popular local rock climbing spots too. But you might find the most satisfied smiles are found with even simpler pleasures: when your campfire catches alight, when your kids discover the rope swing or when you wake up to the sound of birdsong. That’s wild contentment, indeed.

Sloe - Grass Pitch (Compost Toilet)
Perfect break away from it all
Loved it here, a real hidden gem. Susie was so helpful and friendly and the site is just gorgeous. Well spaced pitches, we didn’t hear a thing from anyone else the whole time, felt like we had the field to ourselves. Compost loos were clean and easy to use and we had a peak at the glamping bathrooms, honestly would come back just to try one of those too. Great pitch for camper van, level and no trouble getting back off again. Would go again! Thanks Susie :)

Beech grass pitch
A peaceful retreat
Susie and David are incredible hosts. We stayed in a campervan and ground was wet when we arrived - first our exhaust fell off and then we ended up stuck. David helped out with the exhaust and then returned to tow us out. The site is beautiful and very peaceful, the perfect escape from day to day stresses! They could add many more pitches to the land but instead they give you plenty of space between pitches so you don’t feel like your in your neighbours tent with them. Thank you for a wonderful weekend, we will definitely be back if you will have us

Sloe - Grass Pitch (Compost Toilet)
Beautiful and peaceful spot, with nice walks nearby which Susie suggested. The pitches are well spaced out with individual fire pits for cosy evenings. Even though we booked last minute Susie was great at reaching out to help with directions, and came down on the evening.

Damson - Grass Pitch (Compost Toilet)
Lovely eco site
What a lovely site! Easy to find and within walking distance of a decent pub. Because of the time we booked, we had the whole site to ourselves but you could see that it would still feel really private even when full, I guess that’s the point of a greener camping club site! The host, Susie was really helpful, came to see we had settled in ok and to top up the wood for us for our campfire, she also told us to drop her a text if we needed anything. The beryl bathroom was a luxurious treat in what was otherwise a ‘wild camping’ experience. What a delightful addition! We would definitely recommend and will return!

Sloe - Grass Pitch (Compost Toilet)
Last minute getaway.
We booked this as a last minute trip on the last weekend of April. The host was very helpful, friendly and communicated clearly, and because there weren’t many others booked in we were upgraded to a pitch closer to the facilities. The site is easy to access (although google maps took us to the farm and we happened upon the site by a bit of chance whilst looking for somewhere to turn around), clean and quiet, our son loved the toy tractors dotted around, our dog enjoyed having a good sniff around too. The pub, which does good hearty food is a 15 min walk across fields, we were provided with some great recommendations too. Just what we wanted for a quick night away. We hope to come back soon.

From the host
At the intersection of wild, green, nature and convenience lies wild conTENTment, off-grid eco camping experience. At the heart of the experience is our 120-cow dairy farm, New House Farm on the English/Welsh border. We passionately believe that nature is vital to well-being and simplicity is at our core. Our site offers nearly wild camping with little infrastructure in the field except a few essentials such as taps, perfectly formed compost loos, fire pits and log stores. For those a little daunted by the fully wild camping experience we hope to provide enough support and optional luxuries such as en-suite Beryl bathrooms complete with outdoor washing area, flushing loo, hand basin, outdoor shower with screen and copper roll top bath to make your stay with us relaxing and stress-free so all you leave with is an experience of wild contentment.  Pubs and shops are also within walking distance. We are committed to enriching the landscape and pledge to use at least 10% of the profit we make from wild conTENTment to go into re-wilding schemes around the farm. Our approach to hospitality is one of light touch and accessibility for all. Light touch on the environment and on you. There are 10 pitches over 11 acres so you won't be continually coming across hoards of other tourists. We have been awarded certification by the Greener camping club and as such one person from each group must be members at a charge of £12 per annum.
Nearby attractions

There are great walks and cycles routes on Llynclys Common, Llanymynech Rock and on the Montgomery Canal which you can reach on foot from the site. In fact, there's a six-mile circular walk from the site which takes in all of the above and touches on Offa's Dyke Path (which is otherwise accessible at Llanmynech, a 10-minute drive from the site). Penycoed Riding Stables (01691 830608) are also within walking distance at only a mile away and Llanmynech Golf Club (01691 830983) is a mile-and-a-half away. Canoe and kayak hire can be found at Canal Central (01691 652 168), a cafe and hire centre along the towpath of the Montgomery canal at Maesbury Mash (about three miles from the site). There are plenty of other attractions within a 30-minute drive including Lake Vrynwy and Pistyll Rhaeder (Wales' tallest waterfall) on the Welsh side of the border and English Heritage-managed Wroxeter Roman City (01743 761330) and Shrewsbury on the English side, while popular Park Hall Country Experience (01691 671123) is always a hit with younger kids if you fancy meeting animals and exploring the farm.

Food and drink

The closest pub to the site, Cross Guns (01691 839631), offers good pub grub within walking distance of the site (about two miles away along the canal towpath). A little further away in Kinnerley, five miles from site, the Cross Keys (01691 683 688) is a little more pricey but has great food and is both dog and child friendly with a village park next door. The Royal Hill (01743 741242) is another recommended pub with a beautiful setting on the River Seven, about seven miles from site. For coffee and cake, you can walk along the canal towpath three miles to Canal Central (01691 652 168) or drive five miles to Oswestry where there are lots of options including Niche Patisserie (07528 539974). Stonehouse Brewery (01691 676457, Hayes Kitchen (07934 089185), vegan restaurant Fat Rabbit (07510 949462) and Square 1 are also recommended options in the town.
