Glamping on a farm in Herefordshire’s Golden Valley

There are two options at The Orchard Glamping: Maggie the vintage caravan and a bell tent decked out in bunting. You’ll find them both in the Golden Valley. All together it sounds like something out of a children’s story book, doesn’t it? And, actually, it rather looks like that too—especially if you’re lucky enough to arrive at this Herefordshire site on a sunny day. This place is simply idyllic. The glamping is, as the name suggests, in an orchard that’s part of a family farm. There are views of the sparsely-populated countryside of the Golden Valley in one direction and of The Black Mountains in the other. There are ducks on a pond, sheep in the surrounding fields and, come nightfall, an unfathomable number of stars in the sky.

Convinced yet? If so, and you’re heading here with just one significant other, make a beeline for Maggie, a rare Streamlite caravan from 1947. She’s a rosy-hued beauty with a fascinating history linked to her post-war manufacture. That’s something you can read about when you’re tucked up in her bed or sitting at her table sipping from a 1940s teacup. The tea set is just a tiny indication of the thought that’s gone into the furniture and fittings here, thanks to host Ali, who runs the place with husband Rob and has an eye for design. The same attention has been paid to the emperor bell tent, which offers accommodation for up to four. While the canvas means you’re a little closer to proper camping, there are still plenty of home comforts. It has made-up beds, a shepherd’s hut kitchen and its own loo and shower just outside.

The views and the peace and quiet make staying put quite tempting but it’s a good location to explore from too. There are lovely walks from site—including the chance to head to one of three local pubs within a 20-minute radius. There are the ever present Black Mountains and then there are the rivers: the Dore, the Monnow, and the Wye. They offer riverside walks, canoeing, and a succession of places to visit on the water’s edge, starting with unmissable Hay-on-Wye.

Orchard Glamping Emperor Tent
Perfect location, lovely setup. Very clean and has everything you need. Private bathroom and kitchen. Free games room on site which our kids loved. Had good fun seeing the sheep, chickens and especially Tango the dog!

From the host
Perched above the aptly named Golden Valley, with far reaching views over the majestic Black Mountains, this is a space of beauty and tranquillity. With a hundred rolling acres to explore, meeting the sheep and chickens is just a way of life. Footpaths from the door take you to great places to sample fabulous local food and drink. A short drive will take you to the famous book town of Hay on Wye, the cathedral city of Hereford, Abergavenny, famous for it's food festival and Ross on Wye, where tourism is said to have begun. If you can tear yourself away from toasting marshmallows over the fire pit, or sampling the local farmhouse cider, the next stop is the on site games room - great fun for young and old.
Nearby attractions

In The Orchard Glamping is on Cothill Farm near Turnastone, a tiny village within Herefordshire’s Golden Valley. You can explore the farm’s 100 acres and head out on walks in the surrounding countryside too. Head for the River Dore which runs through the valley and you can join the well-marked Herefordshire Trail – or part of it (the whole thing is 150 miles long). Hay-on-Wye with its famous book shops is 13 miles away at the top of the Golden Valley. It’s a lovely town to wander around but also a good place to head out for a walk from; try the hike up Hay Bluff for great views. It’s on the edge of the Black Mountains, within the Brecon Beacons National Park and just over the border into Wales. Plenty more adventures are available in that direction. There’s also canoe hire available here and at plenty of other places along the River Wye; at Hay, at county town Hereford (12 miles) or Ross-on-Wye (22 miles), all worth a visit.

Food and drink

A footpath runs through Cothill Farm site to Peterhill where you’ll find a small shop, a recommended restaurant, Food for Thought, and a good pub, The Nag’s Head. The village is a cross-country walk of just over two miles or a drive of around three miles away. There are, in fact two other pubs within a 20-minute walk of site and, a little further (but only a five-minute drive away), is riverside pub,The Bridge Inn at Michaelchurch Escley – your hosts recommend the slow-roasted lamb. There’s plenty of good local produce for sale nearby. If you happen to be at In The Orchard on the last Saturday of the month, there’s a country market in Vowchurch village hall and if that doesn’t coincide with your stay, there’s a good market in Hay (13 miles away) every Thursday; where there are also plenty of independent shops and places to eat and drink. Other local producers and suppliers who sell from their own sites include Rowlestone Ice Cream (10 miles), Mailes Butchers in Ewyas Harold (eight miles) and Gwatkins Cider (four miles).
