Camping on a Peak District farm near the Monsal Trail

White Peak Camping is a simple site in the Peak District and simultaneously in the middle of everything and in the middle of nowhere. It’s a campsite on a farm that’s midway between Bakewell and Buxton. It’s just 15 minutes’ drive from Chatsworth House and a single mile from the walking and cycling of the traffic-free Monsal Trail. And yet, despite being within easy reach of the must-see sights of this part of the national park, it’s rather quiet round here. The site is in the sleepy hamlet of Priestcliffe surrounded by dry stone walls, farmer’s fields and… well… not much more than that.

There’s no shop within walking distance but there are two pubs if you don’t mind a mile-or-so hike across hills and dales. Those who will like it here most are exactly those kind of people; capable and outdoorsy. This is a dog-friendly, pitch where-you-please campsite in a gently sloping field that’s available for campers with tents and campervans only. You enter through the farmyard and, if hosts Paul and Janice are busy elsewhere on the farm, you’re invited to set yourself up. They’ll be around to say hello later and to sell you logs for a campfire if you want one. They'll provide a fire pit for free. It’s a relaxed place with a tree swing, toilets and taps – but no showers. There’s certainly nothing to distract you from the far-reaching Peak District views.

As the name of the campsite implies, this is the White Peak, the central-southern and softer part of the Peak District National Park where the countryside forms rolls rather than crags. The Monsal Trail, the route of a former railway line, provides a great way to travel through it on two feet or two wheels. You can join it just a mile away at Miller’s Dale. For a faster way to get around, you’re also not far off the A6 which links Buxton, just over six miles in one direction, with Bakewell, just over six miles away in the other. In fact, all of the White Peak is easily accessible from here and all of the wider Peak District can be explored on day trips too.

We are a family run campsite on a working farm in the heart of the Peak District National Park. We offer basic amenities of toilets and cold water. We have no reception but are available 24/7. Pitch your tent wherever you wish the views are amazing on the whole field. Lots of fabulous walks direct from the site. Neolithic tombs and burial sites within walking distance, Monsal Trail and the river Wye a short walk. Nearest pubs are just over a mile walk or a 5 minute drive. Closest shops are a ten minute drive to Buxton, Bakewell or Tideswell. Chatsworth House 12 mins drive. Castleton caves 30 mins drive.

White Peak Camping
First HipCamp trip!
As our first Hipcamp trip, this site was absolutely perfect! We received clear and concise instructions and information upon reserving a slot. There was ample space, plenty of free-to-use fire pits, and the owners were visible each evening as they sold fire wood and checked in with guests. The toilets on site were really well maintained, well lit and stocked with tissues, hand gel and sanitary bins. There is a sink on site with drinking water which can be used for washing up utensils etc. There is a 10pm cut off for people playing music on site, this was really well obeyed and other campers were really respectful! This was a great overall experience and I'm struggling to find any constructive feedback! Thank you! 10/10 will visit again!

White Peak Camping
Great little campsite, very simple facilities. It just what you need for a short break in the countryside. Access is a little bumpy so be cautious with larger vehicles. Lots of families, couples and singletons enjoying the site. Thanks

Great, back to basics campsite not far from Miller’s Dale. Nice mix of families, large groups, young back packers. Facilities are fine. Help yourself to a fire pit. Logs delivered.

We are a family run campsite on a working farm in the heart of the Peak District National Park. Our campsite offers basic amenities of flushing toilets and cold water. We run a peaceful site and are surrounded by areas steeped in both natural beauty and human history. We have an array of walking and hiking routes and are approximately just over a mile walk to the Monsal Trail and the river Wye. Chatsworth House is a 12 minute drive or you can drive to Buxton, Bakewell or Tideswell in ten minutes. Pick where you want to pitch, we have no set pitches. All areas have amazing views. Way in to the site is through the farmyard drive slowly until you see the site. We have no reception but someone is usually about to help and we pop down to the site often. Arrival time - Sat/Sun from 10am Departure 12.00 but we can be flexible Fire pits free to use on a first come basis please sit them on bricks. We sell bags of logs. Loud music is not allowed at anytime. No noise after 10pm. Group bookings ONLY accepted if quiet! We are happy to accept well behaved dogs who must be kept on a lead on site. We do not accept breeds/crossbreed dogs listed in the dangerous dogs act.
Nearby attractions

White Peak Camping is in a tiny hamlet in the White Peak part of the Peak District National Park. The whole of the national park is great for outdoor adventure including walking, cycling, climbing and caving. You can head out on walks in the surrounding countryside using the network of local footpaths. A farm track (suitable if you’re on foot or mountain bikes) leads towards Miller’s Dale and a handy access point onto the Monsal Trail, a traffic-free trail on the route of a former railway which goes through tunnels and over viaducts. If you haven’t brought your bike, you can hire one at either end of this 11-mile trail either at Chee Dale or Hassop Station. Much of the trail follows the River Wye and at western end Chee Dale is a peaceful limestone gorge and nature reserve. The market town of Bakewell and the spa town of Buxton are both just over six miles away (a drive of about 15 minutes in either direction) with plenty of shops, sites and eateries. The magnificent Chatsworth House, its gardens and wider estate are also only about 15 minutes’ drive from site as is the pretty, medieval house, Haddon Hall.

Food and drink

Walk cross country on farm tracks and footpaths to reach The Angler’s Rest at Miller’s Dale for food and drinks in a riverside garden that’s dog and family friendly. It’s just over a mile away on foot or just under two by car. In the other direction, also about a mile away, there’s another good option for a meal out: The Queen’s Arms in Taddington. For campsite supplies, stock up before you come or use day trips in Buxton or Bakewell to do your shopping. Alternatively, the nearest shops are in Tideswell (five miles).
