Nearly wild camping on the western edge of the Lake District overlooking the Duddon Estuary

A few patches of mown grass, a few sensible rules and a couple of compost loos are just about all that separate Hazel Mount Fellside from a wild camping pitch. This campsite on the quiet western edge of the Lake District offers a place to pitch your tent in natural surroundings with spectacular views. And that’s about all folks. It’s simple stuff: if you’re someone who loves the idea of wild camping, but aren’t quite ready to head into the high fells with a backpack, then this place is for you. It’s somewhere to enjoy the outdoors in all its glory with the basics taken care of, thanks to a thoughtful owner.

That owner is ecologist Ruth, who chose the spot for its natural appeal. We’re not just talking about the pretty view of the Duddon Estuary but the fact that this land has been left relatively untouched. There are scattered patches of woodland among the grassland that’s been grazed rather than intensively farmed. This means it’s relatively biodiverse and Ruth wants to keep it that way. As a result, the few campers who are allowed on site at any one time are asked to exercise a light touch.

Cars are parked out of sight of the camping field, campfires (which are allowed on three of the four pitches) must be raised off the ground to protect it and the whole site is off grid so don’t expect electric hook up. In fact, don’t expect running water either. There’s none of that. Instead, Ruth brings military-style jerry cans with 20-litres of tap water for each pitch to cook and clean with and gives you a supply of drinking water for your first night too. The main pitch, Daisy Camp, which has space for up to eight campers, has a little kitchen unit with a sink and a work surface but other than that self-sufficiency is important here so you’ll need to come prepared.

Having said that, logs are for sale and there are usually a few farm-fresh eggs and a selection of snacks on an honesty table too. For more than that you’ll need to head to the nearby village of Broughton-in-Furness where there are a couple of recommended pubs and a good butchers. Hazel Mount Fellside is on the south-western side of the Lake District. Coniston Water is the closest lake, 600-metre Black Combe is the nearest summit to conquer and sandy beaches on the Irish Sea are just six miles in the other direction. The site is not quite seaside, lakeside, mountainside or wild — but it’s satisfyingly close to all of these.

Bluebell Pitch
Peace
An amazing place to get away from things. Especially the bluebell pitch its very secluded. Felt like we were the only ones there. Only stayed for one night. Wish we could have stayed for longer. If you like to be out in nature then this place is for you.

From the host
On the quiet western edge of the Lake District National Park, Hazel Mount Fellside offers a place to pitch your tent in natural surroundings with spectacular views. If you love the idea of wild camping but want the basics taken care of, this is the site for you. The camping area is nestled between a traditional hay meadow, a small deciduous bluebell woodland, pony paddocks and wildflower fellside. As the site is lightly grazed it is an ideal wildlife haven. Keep your eyes peeled for basking lizards, skittish roe deer, field voles, peacock butterflies, grasshoppers, and a whole plethora of wildflowers. An array of bird visitors include the occasional barn owl, jays, and woodpeckers. Ideal for nature lovers! There are two composting loos on site (with two more added when the site is full). There is no running water but shop bought bottled water is provided for the first night, and tap water for washing up is supplied as required. Currently there are no showers on site but I can offer the use of a portable shower unit for those who wish to freshen up during their stay. The main area, Daisy Camp, includes a sunken firepit and sole use of an outdoor kitchen. Raised firepits and BBQs can be hired for use at Primrose and Snowdrop. A bag of easy light charcoal is included in the price. Fires or BBQs are not permitted at Bluebell pitch as it's in the woodland however the careful use of gas stoves are allowed here. Firewood can be purchased on site, and campers are asked not to collect fallen wood for burning as this is left for fungi and invertebrates. There is an honesty table on site, stocked with fresh eggs and occasional snacks and drinks. And a toy cupboard with games and blankets that campers are welcome to borrow during their stay. Parking is limited and inside the entrance on grass. A clean wheelbarrow may be available to help you carry your equipment round to your pitch. Hazel Mount Fellside sits on the western edge of the Lake District National Park with all lakes, fells, towns and villages within reach for day trips. The nearest lakes are Coniston, a 20 minute drive away, and Ambleside and Windermere are both about 40 minutes (all within 20 miles). A number of footpaths and bridleways are accessible from site, including a beautiful route that takes you past the Stone Circle at Swinside. Safe, sandy beaches at Haverigg and Silecroft are a 10 minute drive away (6 miles). Popular, and perhaps lesser known, attractions nearby include Muncaster Castle (01229 717614) with it's beautiful gardens and home to the Owl & Hawk Centre, Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway Company (ride aboard a fully operational narrow gauge steam train, 01229 717171) and the Dock Museum with free admissions, in Barrow-in-Furness (01229 876400). Amenities in the nearby towns of Millom and Broughton-in-Furness include a couple of small supermarkets, takeaway restaurants, butchers, a laundrette, and several small independent shops. Local pubs and eateries in the local area include The Punch Bowl (01229 774457), The Black Cock Inn (01229 716529), The Old Kings Head (01229 716293), The Clock Tower (01229 364979) and others for you to discover. Hazel Mount Fellside is the perfect getaway for families, small groups, couples or the solo traveller wanting to unwind in breathtaking, natural settings, reconnect with loved ones, away from the hustle and bustle of the more popular hot-spots within the National Park.
