When to go

The Hermitage is open daily, all year-round, and makes for a delightful visit at any time. Perhaps best of all, however, is the autumn when the forest is bursting with colour and you can spot salmon leaping in Black Linn Falls as they head to spawning grounds farther upriver. Other wildlife you can see throughout the year include red squirrels and occasional beavers. Spring is a great time to see the blooming bluebells.

Know before you go

  • There is an entry fee (free for National Trust of Scotland members).
  • The closest bus stop is at Rose Cottage, a five-minute walk away.
  • Take care at the water’s edge. Even if it appears slow, the River Braan has a fast-flowing current.
  • If driving in winter, take care as the entry and paths are not treated for ice.
