When to go

Visiting St Kilda is really only possible during the summer months. Boat tours typically only operate from between May to September. July and August are peak season, so book well in advance if you plan to travel in these months. June is probably the optimal month to visit as you’ll have the best chance of good weather; daylight hours are long, and it’s outside of school holidays. Journeys are always weather-dependent, however, so it’s best to have flexible plans.

Know before you go

  • The best way to get to St Kilda is by one of the charter boats that operate from the Western Isles, Skye and the mainland. Journey time depends on the sea conditions.
  • There are no shops on St Kilda, so bring everything you’ll need with you, as well additional supplies in case your departure is delayed.
  • Uneven path surfaces make access very difficult for visitors with mobility problems and wheelchair users.
  • There is no mobile reception on the islands.
