Well-located Greenock offers access to walking trails around town, in Loch Lomond, and beyond.
Just 40 kilometres west of Glasgow, Greenock is a handy base for heading into nearby hills and mountains and exploring Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Keen walkers will be especially interested in the Greenock Cut looped trail around an aqueduct that takes you through moorland and high above the town for panoramic views of the River Clyde. You can also get a good view over the Clyde from the town's Esplanade and at Lyle Hill at the west end of town. Other attractions include the McLean Museum and Art Gallery and the Old West Kirk, which features stained glass by Dante Gabriel Rossetti.Â
The west of Scotland is often wet, so be prepared for rain any time of year. Visiting in the spring and summer months means that you can fit more activities into the long hours of daylight. Winters, while chilly, are fairly moderate but daylight hours are short. If planning to hike the West Highland Way or explore Loch Lomond, itâs a good idea to time your trip for spring or autumn to avoid the biggest crowds.
