Staying in Dunvegan has all the advantages of a rural getaway while remaining within walking distance of the village’s shops and amenities. Small and friendly Kinloch Campsite offers campers an informal site on the shore of Loch Dunvegan with excellent views in all directions. Its grass pitches are suitable for tents and caravans/motorhomes and set between banks of wild flowers.
Greshornish
Heading 10 minutes east, Loch Greshornish offers stunning scenery and is a favorite of walkers and anglers. You’ll likely spot the famous wooly Highland cows here and perhaps even an otter or two. On the loch’s shores, the Skye Camping and Caravanning Club Site is located on a working croft with plenty of space for campers, caravanners and motorhomes who are club members.
Glenbrittle
A little farther away—40 minutes down the west coast from Dunvegan—Glenbrittle is located at the foot of the Cuillin mountains and the ideal base camp for those wanting to enjoy some of the U.K.’s best rock and hill climbing. On Loch Brittle beach, Glenbrittle Campsite offers a wild camping-style experience with the advantage of nearby facilities, including an adjacent coffee shop. First-come, first-served sites are generously spaced across the field and down toward the shores of Loch Brittle.
When to go
The weather on the Isle of Skye is typically at its best in the summer months but visitor numbers are also at their highest. If cooler temperatures and rain are not issues, you can avoid crowds by visiting at a quieter time of year, such as April/May or September/October. Winter will feel like they have the place to themselves, but some businesses may be closed.

- While you can get around Skye by bus, the service is limited so it makes more sense to use your own transportation.
- The shops of Portree are your best bet for stocking up on food and supplies.
