Campsites with campfires in Invereshie and Inshriach National Nature Reserve

·

On the western edge of Cairngorms National Park, Invereshie and Inshriach National Nature Reserve presents the grandeur of that mighty park in miniature. Take to the trails that lead through peaceful pinewoods to exposed ice-sculpted mountain slopes for excellent views of the Cairngorms while looking out for such wildlife as red squirrel, pine marten, crested tits, and crossbill. The reserve culminates in the high mountain plateau and windy peaks of Sgòr Gaoith and Carn Bàn Mòr where dotterel, ptarmigan, and mountain hare steel themselves against the cold. Camping is not permitted in recreational areas, but Aviemore campsites and the Spey Bridge area are both under a 30-minute drive away.

The Loft Glamping and Camping is situated at East Grange Farm, Kinloss, Moray. It 's a working farm that has evolved over the years to include Wigwam Glamping and Camping for campervans, motorhomes and tents. A number of the old farm buildings have been reppurposed as venue spaces for Weddings, Events and Workshops. The "wilderness" campsite offers pitches suitable for tents and small campervans whilst the Stackyard area is suitable for motorhomes and mega tents. All motorhome pitches have electrical hook-up and we have a good number of electric tent pitches. We also now take bookings for caravans. We do not have fully service pitches Onsite, we also have Original Wigwam cabins which are wooden camping cabins (Pods) that offer all year round protection against the elements. With heating, electricity, fridge, kettle and toasters. For those wanting a bit more luxury there are also ensuite Wigwam Cabins onsite with wood fired hot tubs. We welcome families, groups, well behaved dogs and do allow campfires outside the wigwams and at pitches and can provide fire hubs on the campsite (this must be pre-arranged). The Loft Glamping and Camping looks forward to welcoming you throughout the year!

Campsites with campfires in Invereshie and Inshriach National Nature Reserve guide

When to go

The reserve is open all year-round. Spring is best for wildlife, including crossbill, dotterel, ptarmigan, and red and roe deer, as well as the occasional golden eagle and peregrine. Summer is best for hillwalking or mountaineering. In autumn, the heathland blazes with purple heather and the spectacle of rutting red deer stags. Winter is the time for peaceful wanderings through a snow-covered landscape. Summer is peak visitor season in the Cairngorms, though February and March are also popular with snowsport enthusiasts.

Know before you go

  • This nature reserve is important for wildlife so visitors should visit responsibly, following the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
  • There are no marked trails on the reserve, but an easy-to-follow mountain path from the parking lot follows Allt Ruadh for 3.7 miles to the summit of Sgòr Gaoith.
  • The closest bus stop is at the end of the B970 road, about six miles from the reserve. The Heather Hopper bus service provides connections throughout Cairngorms National Park. The closest railway stations are in Kingussie and Aviemore, both six miles away and on the Perth to Inverness line.
  • The weather in the Highlands is always changeable. Bring warm, wet-weather gear, even in summer.
