Fernlea is our home in the heart of an agricultural plain called “The Carse of Gowrie,” which runs for 20 miles or so along the River Tay between Perth and Dundee. It’s a beautiful area that we hope you will love too. We are a short walk from the village of Errol, with access to lovely walks along the Tay. We are adjacent to the local bus route (just stick your arm out!), the Sustrans cycle route 77, plus only a mile or so from the A90 Perth to Dundee / Aberdeen road. We are perfect for both a short stopover and a longer break with a fascinating local area to explore. All pitches have hard standing, water on each pitch, grey waste disposal adjacent to the pitch, and a 10 or 16 amp electric supply with a chemical toilet waste tank with rinsing tap behind our garage. We are also within easy access to Fife and the southern area of the Highlands. Walkers and bird watchers will find many footpaths by the River Tay and can climb the local hills to see buzzards, hawks, ducks, and migrating geese throughout the seasons. Any visitors requiring repairs or accessories for their van will find the large Perthshire Caravan dealership nearby. Every Sunday, one of Scotland’s largest car boot sales and markets is held less than a mile away. Our Huts are located within the Moss Wood area of Bute Forest - a mixed birch and alder wood that extends up the hillside to the west of the A886 that connects the Rhubodach Ferry to Port Bannatyne and Rothesay. Moss Wood has a range of facilities. Park on the shore-side where the coast can be enjoyed or at the main entrance, and take a walk up through Moss Wood along the Poetry Trail. A steep walk in places, the Poetry Trail is a loop punctuated with places to stop and read, to stop and think. Read nature poetry from throughout the ages, stop at the Blether Stane, or taking the spur to the Viewing Point back south across the Kyles. Moss Wood connects to the West Island Way – take the Poetry Trail and the spur to the Viewing Point – and then take the Stag’s Trod further up (steeply) till you reach the West Island Way. From there, head south towards Port Bannatyne or north along the boundary of the Community Forest. From the viewing point, you can also explore interesting heritage features such as the old WW2 bunker, kayak shelter, Balnakailly settlement, and the SSSI oak woodland.

The pods here have been named after the places where the owners spent their childhood and continue to live. Feel free to stop off while travelling to or from the Isle of Skye (two hours and 10 minutes) or stay for a good while… Fort William’s centre has a splendid selection of pubs, restaurants, shops and a bus and rail station. Plus, there are lots of links courses for golfers a day trip away, like the Royal Dornoch (two hours and 25 minutes). Both pods have a small double bed (a bit narrower than a standard double) with all bed linen provided. The kitchen areas are equipped with a fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster (crockery, cutlery and towels are handily provided). To keep things nice and tasty, the pods are also well insulated. The patio doors and the rear opening window are both double glazed and there are electric radiators to inject some extra heat into the kitchen and living area.

Weekend Trip to Fernlea - Campsite & Pod

Staying at Bruce’s house was an absolute pleasure! He was so incredibly helpful and kind and the pod is perfect. I would live there for the rest of my life if I could! The kitchen is great. The hot tub is beyond belief and so good that it’s almost intoxicating. When my boyfriend and I accidentally reset the Internet, Bruce was beyond kind and helpful. Next time I’m in this area I will for sure Be staying here again.

We loved the cabin. Spacious and we slept very well. The best shower ever! The campsite has wonderful views and is well maintained. We used the bbq and fire pit. The barn is well equipped for cooking and relaxing. Angus is a wonderful host. Definitely would return to Muiredge when in Scotland!

The pods were clean, comfortable, spacious and well equipped. Unfortunately the fly screen for our door was broken so it was a choice of being gnawed on by midges or being very hot- we chose the heat which was a bit uncomfortable but a fan had been provided which helped. The views were incredible of the loch and mountains and the walking and cycling just stunning. It's a little public with it being next to the main path but if you aren't looking for seclusion then it's fine and we found it vibrant and interesting watching the boats and people coming and going. The food in the cafe was excellent and we enjoyed the take away option, it does close fairly early so best to get there before 5:15pm. All in all it was a beautiful spot and very good accommodation and we had a brilliant time.

I loved my 4 night break in the Bramble Yurt. The yurt was clean and cosy. I did have the stove burner on due to the weather being so good. The bathroom shed was clean and fresh. The fridge was a god send considering the temperature reach a high of 27 degrees. I had a relaxing time sitting in the fresh air watching the wild life and the world go by. I would highly recommend Organic Welltree. I shall definitely go back. I wish to thanks them for my time at Kirkland.

The Charcoal Huts were so magical. We stayed in Birch and it had amazing views, was quite private and had everything we needed - including things we forgot. It was beautiful and cosy inside and the fire kept us so warm. I really loved this place.

Very friendly staff. Easy to find. Great facilities. Lovely walks right at back of premises. Only downside for me was the noise off other campers. People turning up and setting stuff up after 10 pm. Also loud group of lads. But I’m use to wild camping so maybe noise would be acceptable for most.

The pod was very clean and organized. The hosts came in and tidied up and left clean towels just like a hotel. They also gave us a tour when we got there and explained how the shower and door lock works instead of us having to use trial and error. The pod has plenty of storage space under the bed and all of the appliances work. Definitely will stay there again. The space is okay for two people, but probably not three.

2 nights at Pirnie Lodge Farm

From the minute we arrived Anne was welcoming and gave us all the information to do with the lodge, the lodge itself was spotless and felt homely from the minute we walked in. Anne also left a welcome pack which was an added bonus, the hot tub was ready on arrival and Anne also shown us how to use this before leaving Anne gave us recommendations on places to visit and where we could go for days out, we were recommended the milk barn which was delicious, the ice cream and milkshakes were perfect! We would also recommend going there! Thank you Anne, we love our stays

Where to go

North of Spean Bridge

Less than three miles north of Spean Bridge’s famed Commando Memorial, which commemorates the elite soldiers of WWII, family-run Gairlochy Holiday Park offers grass and hardstanding pitches for caravans, campervans and tents, as well as a selection of wooden chalets overlooking the River Spean Gorge with views to Ben Nevis, the Grey Corries and the Nevis Range.

East of Spean Bridge

Three and a half miles east of Spean Bridge, family-owned Bunroy Park occupies nine acres (3.6 hectares) of land in Roy Bridge, on the banks of the River Spean. The site has excellent views of the Nevis Range and spaces for touring caravans or motorhomes and tents. Glamping accommodation is also available in its log pods, tipi-style tents and self-catering lodges.

Fort William

Ten miles southwest of Spean Bridge, Fort William is a hub for outdoor adventure, from climbing Ben Nevis to hiking around Glencoe, and is a handy base due to its transportation links, shops and restaurants. In the north of town, Ben Nevis Holiday Park offers views of Ben Nevis and has grass and electric hard standing pitches for caravans, motorhomes and tents, as well as static caravans and self-catering holiday lodges.

Moy Bridge

Along the Great Glen Way, five miles north of Spean Bridge, you’ll find a designated free ‘wild camping’ area at Moy Bridge. The basic site has just a picnic table and room for only a few tents.

When to go

Fort William and the surrounding area is typically busy with tourists from May/June through September. At that time of year you’re likely to find crowded trails and booked-up campsites. Between April and early May is a good time to visit to avoid crowds. While the temperature will be cool, the landscape will be filled with blooming flowers and you can still enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling and kayaking.

Wild camping is legally allowed in Scotland if practised responsibly under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
You can reach Spean Bridge by bus from Fort William and Inverness (both cities have direct train connections to other major Scottish cities.
You will likely find everything you need in the well-stocked shops of Fort William, 10 miles away.
