Welcome to Fernlea. We would love to have you visit us, either on our 5 pitch campsite for motorhomes and caravans, or in 2025 to our new luxury glamping pod. Fernlea is our home in the heart of an agricultural plain called “The Carse of Gowrie,” which runs for 20 miles or so along the River Tay between Perth and Dundee. It’s a beautiful area that we hope you will love too. We are a short walk from the village of Errol, with access to lovely walks along the Tay. We are adjacent to the local bus route (just stick your arm out!), the Sustrans cycle route 77, plus only a mile or so from the A90 Perth to Dundee / Aberdeen road. We are perfect for both a short stopover and a longer break with a fascinating local area to explore. All pitches have hard standing, water on each pitch, grey waste disposal adjacent to the pitch, and a 10 or 16 amp electric supply with a chemical toilet waste tank with rinsing tap behind our garage. We are also within easy access to Fife and the southern area of the Highlands. Walkers and bird watchers will find many footpaths by the River Tay and can climb the local hills to see buzzards, hawks, ducks, and migrating geese throughout the seasons. Any visitors requiring repairs or accessories for their van will find the large Perthshire Caravan dealership nearby. Every Sunday, one of Scotland’s largest car boot sales and markets is held less than a mile away. Climbing, hill walking, mountain biking and water-based sports are all on the agenda in this area, but especially in Fort William (20 minutes’ drive) and Lochaber, which have been ascribed as a capital for outdoor adventures. Scotland’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis, is also 20 minutes’ drive away. Even closer is Loch Lochy (10 minutes’ drive), which has access to part of the 79-mile Great Glen Way (around 10 minutes’ drive). From Fort William, start off on another long-distance trail, the West Highland Way, which stretches for 96 miles across the banks of Loch Lomond and ends in Milngavie. The pods here have been named after the places where the owners spent their childhood and continue to live. Feel free to stop off while travelling to or from the Isle of Skye (two hours and 10 minutes) or stay for a good while… Fort William’s centre has a splendid selection of pubs, restaurants, shops and a bus and rail station. Plus, there are lots of links courses for golfers a day trip away, like the Royal Dornoch (two hours and 25 minutes). Both pods have a small double bed (a bit narrower than a standard double) with all bed linen provided. The kitchen areas are equipped with a fridge, microwave, kettle and toaster (crockery, cutlery and towels are handily provided). To keep things nice and tasty, the pods are also well insulated. The patio doors and the rear opening window are both double glazed and there are electric radiators to inject some extra heat into the kitchen and living area.

Staying at Bruce’s house was an absolute pleasure! He was so incredibly helpful and kind and the pod is perfect. I would live there for the rest of my life if I could! The kitchen is great. The hot tub is beyond belief and so good that it’s almost intoxicating. When my boyfriend and I accidentally reset the Internet, Bruce was beyond kind and helpful. Next time I’m in this area I will for sure Be staying here again.

The pods were clean, comfortable, spacious and well equipped. Unfortunately the fly screen for our door was broken so it was a choice of being gnawed on by midges or being very hot- we chose the heat which was a bit uncomfortable but a fan had been provided which helped. The views were incredible of the loch and mountains and the walking and cycling just stunning. It's a little public with it being next to the main path but if you aren't looking for seclusion then it's fine and we found it vibrant and interesting watching the boats and people coming and going. The food in the cafe was excellent and we enjoyed the take away option, it does close fairly early so best to get there before 5:15pm. All in all it was a beautiful spot and very good accommodation and we had a brilliant time.

Stuart really put thought and effort into making the Airstream and area into an amazing place to stay. With a deck, gas BBQ, firepit and lots of spots to sit outside it makes for a very relaxed time away. The area is very quiet but there is lots to see and do that's not very far. Truly a great host, it was a pleasure to stay there.

The pod was very clean and organized. The hosts came in and tidied up and left clean towels just like a hotel. They also gave us a tour when we got there and explained how the shower and door lock works instead of us having to use trial and error. The pod has plenty of storage space under the bed and all of the appliances work. Definitely will stay there again. The space is okay for two people, but probably not three.

From the minute we arrived Anne was welcoming and gave us all the information to do with the lodge, the lodge itself was spotless and felt homely from the minute we walked in. Anne also left a welcome pack which was an added bonus, the hot tub was ready on arrival and Anne also shown us how to use this before leaving Anne gave us recommendations on places to visit and where we could go for days out, we were recommended the milk barn which was delicious, the ice cream and milkshakes were perfect! We would also recommend going there! Thank you Anne, we love our stays

Where to go

Carnoustie Golf Links

There are three 18-hole golf courses here—the championship course has hosted The Open eight times. For less serious golfers, there’s also Carnoustie Nestie, a six-hole course designed for novices that is free to play. You can also practice at the Golf Performance Centre. For families, the Sandy Sensation playpark is on the seafront next to the links and has an adventure playground, splash area and paddling pool.

East Haven

Under four miles (six kilometres) north of Carnousite, the scenic village of East Haven is steeped in fishing history. The coastal walk from Carnoustie takes you across the sandy beach and along a grassy path with sand dunes. East Haven’s bay sits within a small natural harbour and is a popular, and safe, area for children and adults to paddle. One of the most beautiful sections of the Sustrans National Cycle Network 1 runs through the village and up the coast.

Crombie Country Park

Turning inland, five miles (eight kilometres) from Carnoustie, Crombie Country park has a range of walking and cycling trails that go through woodland around Crombie Loch. It’s a great place to spot wildlife, including red squirrels, roe deer and a variety of birds.

When to go

For long daylight hours and your best chance for sunny weather, the best time to visit the area is in summer. The highlight of the season is the annual Carnoustie Gala Week, which is filled with events and festivities including parades, Highland dancing and local food stalls. The summer school holidays (July/August) are the busiest time of year so if travelling at this time, it’s a good idea to book campsites in advance.

Know before you go

If you choose to wild camp, be sure to adhere to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.
There is a regular train service to Carnoustie from Dundee, Aberdeen and Glasgow. A limited service runs to Edinburgh.
There are a few small shops in Carnoustie, as well as a Tesco Superstore a few minutes down the coast in Monifieth,
