The Charcoal Huts - Isle of Bute

2 units · Glamping8 acres · Scotland
Our Huts are located within the Moss Wood area of Bute Forest - a mixed birch and alder wood that extends up the hillside to the west of the A886 that connects the Rhubodach Ferry to Port Bannatyne and Rothesay. Moss Wood has a range of facilities. Park on the shore-side where the coast can be enjoyed or at the main entrance, and take a walk up through Moss Wood along the Poetry Trail. A steep walk in places, the Poetry Trail is a loop punctuated with places to stop and read, to stop and think. Read nature poetry from throughout the ages, stop at the Blether Stane, or taking the spur to the Viewing Point back south across the Kyles. Moss Wood connects to the West Island Way – take the Poetry Trail and the spur to the Viewing Point – and then take the Stag’s Trod further up (steeply) till you reach the West Island Way. From there, head south towards Port Bannatyne or north along the boundary of the Community Forest. From the viewing point, you can also explore interesting heritage features such as the old WW2 bunker, kayak shelter, Balnakailly settlement, and the SSSI oak woodland.

Beach campsites near Portrush with a private bathroom guide

Overview

County Antrim’s Portrush is a typical seaside resort town with beaches, amusement parks, golf courses, and surf schools. It’s an ideal location for a getaway to explore the Causeway Coast’s highlights like the Giant’s Causeway, Dunluce Castle, and the Glens of Antrim. From Ballycastle, you can take a ferry to Rathlin Island or even over to Scotland. There are plenty of camping and holiday parks around Portrush and its neighbouring town Portstewart, with tent and vehicle pitches, plus pods and glamping options.

Where to go

Portstewart

Portrush has a holiday feel in summer and all the trappings, from ice-cream shops to amusement parks. The neighbouring town of Portstewart is a five-minute drive away, with a beachfront promenade and a long sandy beach, as well as plenty of camping options. Look out for tent pitches, geodomes, and vehicle pitches.

Causeway Coast

Drive some of the Causeway Coastal Route to take in the 16th-century ruins of Dunluce Castle, walk on the Giant’s Causeway, or walk the rope bridge at Carrick-a-Rede. You can also tour the famous whiskey distillery at Bushmills, or check out Game of Thrones filming locations like Ballintoy Harbour (The Iron Islands) and Downhill Beach (Dragonstone). Various camping options are set near Ballycastle and all along the coast.

Ballycastle and Rathlin Island

Ballycastle is another seaside resort town with a harbour and beach. From here, you can take the ferry to Rathlin Island, a renowned bird sanctuary where campers can learn about puffins and the thousands of birds that visit. Take a day trip or stay overnight at a glamping park.

When to go

The best weather in Portrush is usually from May to September. July and August are the warmest months but also the most crowded with visitors. Weather can change at short notice, so stay prepared for rain, wind, and cool temperatures.

Know before you go

  • Many campsites are seasonal, so check dates in advance to plan your trip during the right season.
  • Campsites can get busy in summer and around bank holidays, when advance bookings are recommended.
  • Campsites can close and island ferries can get cancelled during bad weather.
