Colmar is one of many mediaeval towns dotted through the Haut-Rhin department of the Grand Est. Follow the Alsace Wine Route as it winds its way from Riquewihr to Mulhouse, stopping to sample Alsatian wines at family-run wineries and admire the picturesque half-timbered buildings of Eguisheim, Hunawihr, and Kaysersberg. Campsites are easy to find, plus there are some unique glampsites hidden away in the hills.
North of Colmar, Strasbourg is the regional capital and the undisputed highlight of the Bas-Rhin department. There are campgrounds and mobile home rentals at Muhlbach Natural Park, which have a swimming pool and public transport access to the Grand Ile. Alternatively, you’ll find camping options near regional sights such as the Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg.
Less than 2-hour drive north of Colmar, the vast North Vosges Regional Natural Reserve is the place to escape the crowds. Miles of hiking, horse riding, and cycle paths lead the way through dense forests and secluded wetlands, passing mediaeval castle ruins and traditional artisan villages. There’s everything you need for an unforgettable camping or glamping experience, whether you want to get back to nature, spend a night in a luxury canvas tent, or sleep in a glamping dome or glass room.
Colmar has two high seasons: July and August over the summer holidays, and December in time for the town’s popular Christmas market. Expect a surge in crowds and prices during these times—it’s best to book campsites well in advance. The good news is that this means most campgrounds in the region stay open year-round (or, in many cases, from March through the first week of January), and you’ll often find special offers outside of the peak times.
