The cabins have a beautiful view of Lake Michigan and the Mackinaw Bridge. They had very hot water which was nice for doing dishes. We also enjoyed the fire pit near the beach. The cabins could use a little TLC but would definitely stay here again.
Cozy fall weekend
We had a great weekend at the Mackinaw Straights Cabins. We enjoyed being close to great hiking and biking in Wilderness State Park and loved the location of the cabins right on Lake Michigan. Our toddler (almost 2 years old) loved waking up at the lake each morning and throwing rocks in the water. The beach is perfect for rock-admiring and walking. We enjoyed fires with the wood provided (that is chopped & covered thankfully, so was dry despite the damp weather), and bought some kindling at the Trading Post down the road to get it started. Upon past reviewers' recommendations, we brought a lighter, extra tp, and our own utensils, in addition to bedding, and we had all we needed. Well, we also brought an electric kettle + coffee press to get the mornings started right. What a beautiful location to visit; thank you for sharing it with us!
Would stay here again
Great location. We are not big tent campers so this gave us a warm, dry place to enjoy and with the storm that blew across the straights on Saturday night, we were happy to be in a cabin. Great place for rock hunting along the beach. Close to beautiful trails in Wilderness SP. McGulpin Point Lighthouse was educational and fun to visit. Emmet County has a couple of discovery trails where you walk the trail, read interesting historical information and use your phone to hear a narrative on your location. Host was very responsive with the code to access the lockbox.
The cabins are basic with a fridge , microwave , shower and a place to rest your head. The location is right on the sandy beach of Lake Michigan with plenty of rocks and shells to explore. Having a campfire her and listening to the lake was very relaxing. We had kids ages 4-12 and they all enjoyed the beach and swimming. The sunrises and sunsets were stunning . Overall we had a great time and would come back again.
Unresponsive and hard to reach host
If you dont mind not hearing from your host about the keybox code to get into the cabins after calling, emailing, texting, and messaging through Hipcamp multiple times on your way to the cabin, then this is the right place. Couldn’t believe how unresponsive the host was; further, how unapologetic and nonchalant he was after finally getting a hold of him. He could just proactively send you the keybox code but doesn’t.
Cabins are super basic and not the cleanest but the surrounding lakefront scenery made up for it, I guess.
Lake michigan bliss
Loved the private location. It was great to sneak away from all the hustle and bustle to this slice of heaven with a fantastic view of Mackinac Bridge. Our daughter loved rock hunting and dipping her toes into the lake. We will definitely be back!
The cabin was outfitted with what we needed for our stay. Beds were comfortable and the host was prompt about answering with the lock box code.
We’d definitely vaca here again!
Loved the cabin. Husband wanted to camp in a tent, but we found this and it was a perfect compromise. Rugged enough for him, yet with great amenities to make vacationing easy for me. We would definitely come back. This was our first time booking through hip camp so had several questions and they were very good at communicating. Both cabins have a queen and a twin bed, small table, sink, fridge, and microwave.
It’s about 15 min west of mackinaw city and next to wilderness state park so you can enjoy all their trails and beaches. The cabin had firewood and has a great area for a campfire. Picnic table feels a little wobbly, but we brought our own chairs and it also has other plastic patio chairs to use so had great outdoor space.
There is an adorable rock beach. Bring water shoes and enjoy the beach for hours. Has the best rock skipping stones of anywhere we’ve been. Water is very clear and our kids (12 & 15) snorkeled for hours looking at rocks, shells, and tiny fish. Water is perfect depth for kids to swim. First day too many/high waves, but next two were perfect calmness to swim. There are two trees that were perfect for hammock and husband relaxed in between fire and beach all afternoon. Cecil Trading Post a few miles away rents kayaks and bikes. We rented a kayak and they were very helpful. They also sell pizza and ice cream, along with other groceries.
Suggestions: Being a fan in summer, extra tp, lighter for fire pit, and lots of bug spray. Get code prior to arriving bc we didn’t have great cell signal once there. (Which was great— needed a break! )
You will have a great time!
We had a wonderful stay! The only downside is the water is very rocky, so not good for swimming. The plus side is there is a sandy beach down the road, it would be even more amazing if the host could dredge the rocks out for onsite swimming.
