Black Cockatoo Rest
Close to Albany.
Property is located just as you come into Albany from Perth and is a quick drive into town. We had a lovely shaded spot under a stand of trees for our stay. Another spot that looked good, but is open and exposed, is on the back corner of the block with lovely views. The rest of the choices would be suitable for a quick overnight stop as it is overlooked by neighbours - trees planted along the fence line will grow and may make this a non issue in the future though.
Lovely walk along the fence line and down a track. Lots of time spent watching little birds chasing each other through the bushes around our site.
Property was easy enough to find, and the orange flags helped identify which track to go down. The tight right turn into the track is tricky.
Contact with Lisa was only the original email from Hipcamp and there was no response to a text message sent.
For ease of access to Albany and price, we would stay there again if we had the same spot.

An immersion in nature
If you are looking for privacy and seclusion but close to town, and you are fully self sufficient then this is a great spot. We were literally surrounded by trees and bush and the continuous birdsong was an absolute delight. We thought the instructions on arrival were not that clear and we were not met (in fact we never met) by the host when the description indicates that we will be. Let me make it a bit clearer for you, when you turn into no 230 you do need to take the driveway on your right but it is more of a dirt trackthan gravel so, that confused us, also the orange flags you need to look for are on the gate, which may be closed but, you do just go through the gate and follow the path. After a few 100m, it turns sharply to the left, keep driving down and you will find yourself in trees and bush. We found a spot on the R/H side by two big trees which looked perfect.
You are out in nature and we did discover that there were a lot of bull ants so were careful to keep everything closed and sealed.
There is no denying though it is an immersion in nature

To start with there was no signage. The hipcamp map showed the property on the opposite of the road, but the physical address was correct. Very sharp turn into the property which was very interesting following the rain; heart stopping really. Sites were not easily distinguishable - in fact we parked against the back fence which partially looked onto a housing development. We had in fact tried to ring the owners and left messages two days prior to see if we could come earlier and stay longer but no response from either number. Tried to ring both numbers on arrival at the property but no answer either. Tried sending a message via Hipcamp but no response either. Ended up feeling very unsure about staying there (whether we were even on the right property) and cut our stay short by a day.

Good location close to town in Albany if you need something basic. We arrived at night and struggled a little bit to know whether we were entering the right way because the instructions didn't mention a gate.
Do not follow the location that HipCamp automatically navigates you to, it is the wrong property. Instead, type in the address given and follow Lisa's instructions.

Black Cockatoo Rest
In a region not known for free/low cost camping options, Black Cockatoo is a real gem. Located in a rural residential area just north of Albany, it’s ideal for exploring all that Albany and its surrounds has to offer. A quiet bush setting offering protection from prevailing S/SE winds, it’s perfect. Thanks Lisa for sharing. Chris C

Not recommended based on our visit.
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to stay for the three nights booked. On arrival there was no signage. Just a small narrow overgrown driveway which was a bit twisty in areas. We struggled to get our car and van round the first bend scratching the side of the van. Our travelling partners couldn’t get their van down. We weren’t sure where the camping area was and tried to walk the track to find some information but were chased out by two large angry free roaming black dogs. We tried to contact the host, but the telephone number shows as invalid and unobtainable. I’ve written twice and unfortunately have not had any response from the host. We had to find alternative arrangements for the three days booked. Very disappointed. I am still awaiting a refund and have contacted Hipcamp
