FIRST LOCATION: EMU BAY HIDEAWAY-30 hectares of peace, mainly vegetated with Kangaroo Island Narrow-leaved Mallee (Eucalyptus cneorifolia, a nationally-protected ecological community). Kangaroos and wallabies are in abundance. It has a wonderful feeling of remoteness and seclusion yet is so close to iconic Emu Bay. Those with 4WD may choose sites overlooking Shoal Bay towards Kingscote. Alternatively, you may set up camp anywhere on the property. There is even one under-cover position with a concrete floor for those concerned about the weather. There are no amenities so guests need to be 100% self-sufficient (including BYO drinking water and toilet) and leave no trace. It is a wild block and only five minutes from the iconic Emu Bay, where the white sandy beach runs for 4kms, most of which is backed by 10 to 20-meter-high dunes. It is one of the best beaches on the island with crystal-clear water. SECOND LOCATION: Farm Stay about 15 km from Emu Bay and 20km from the main town of Kingscote. This is an operating small sheep farm of over 100ha. For security reasons the exact location is not advertised, but will be disclosed upon arrival on Kangaroo Island. There are several beautiful sites. This location is fairly central to most KI visitor attractions. It is a secure place to set up camp and have peace of mind that your belongings will be safe while you are away from the site. The host takes care to situate sites to give campers the feeling of exclusiveness. NOTES; Check with me before lighting a campfire - this depends on the season and risk. There is a drop toilet at the back and external lights and an external kitchen sink with hot and cold water. There is one drop dunny and limited rain water (you are welcome to bring your own drinking water if you need extra). For your convenience, there are recycling and rubbish bins at corner of Snug and Colman’s Rd for all waste disposal. On half of our property we have sheep and lambs in the paddocks. Bring your camera, and you just might be lucky enough to see little lambs playing and even being born. We may also be shearing and invite you to see how this is done. The other half of the property is untouched natural scrub with grass and trees 12 foot tall. There are koalas, eagles, kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas and lots of other native animals and a creek with small waterfalls. In winter time the ground can be boggy, so a 4WD is desirable and will allow you to explore further. From the cabin, make your way down past the dams and go through the shiny gate at the bottom of the hill (please close the gate behind you). Here, you'll discover 125 acres of untouched Kangaroo Island wilderness with walking trails to explore. Keep an eye out for koalas, kangaroos, wedge-tail eagles, wallabies, large grass trees etc We also have two small lakes that you can have a picnic by or drop some Marron nets in for a fresh feed. There are weighing scales provided at the shed so you can pay for them. This is on an honesty system- so please do the right thing, as we have already been burnt from the fires. You must contact me if you wish to fish for marron prior to catching any. There are no shops or restaurants close by (stock up before arriving!) and you will need to travel down dirt roads but you will really have the opportunity to get off the grid, get back to nature and make memories in the stunning, untouched, Kangaroo Island wilderness! My partner and I had a fabulous time at Koala Retreat, Heath and Allan are fantastic hosts who showed us more hospitality than we received anywhere in Australia. The grounds are absolutely beautiful, with stunning views and wildlife. We were lucky enough to see a Koala, as well as tons of kangaroos and birds. We loved our two night stay at Koala Coast Retreat. The views were amazing across to the ocean, we had a really private spot all to ourselves which was amazing, but there are more social spots if you prefer. Heath was an amazing host and Daisy the dog was adorable. Directions were super easy .. and its just a 2 minute drive down the road from Fleurieu Gin which was great to go to for lunch ... we were lucky we had perfect weather. Definitely be back again. Excellent communication and information from Neil and Deb. The property was easy to find and just stunning. Lots level areas to park, with plenty of space between campers (if everyone is considerate that is). Great spaces to catch solar and handy for all things to see on the peninsula. We had a full day driving to the west coast via Yankalilla (fab kebabs and fish n chips), then a lovely walk at Second Valley and plenty of other stops. Another day head east to Goolwa, Middleton (fab bakery) and Port Elliot. 7 minutes from Victor Harbour and you could spend a day there too. I would recommend Bunny Beach over a caravan park for the space and peaceful location. Thanks Deb and Neil.

It was very windy at the start of our stay, but we were able to find a large flat site protected from the wind. The site was very good for solar which is important for us. The Hipcamp was close to all the sites in the north of Kangaroo Island. We enjoyed our stay that much we stayed an extra night.
