The best camping near Cape Range National Park

Insta-worthy natural wonders are never far away in Cape Range National Park. Along the coast, explore more than 50 kilometres of sandy beaches, go snorkelling or scuba diving along the Ningaloo Reef, or set sail on a whale or dolphin-watching cruise. Inland, hike through sweeping canyons and wildflower-filled valleys, cruise along Yardie Creek, and look out for red kangaroos, emus, and rare birds. Campers have plenty of options too. With more than ten campgrounds to choose from, there’s space for motorhomes, caravans, tents, and swags, or you can rent a luxury eco-tent with an ocean view.

• Best for caravans: Mesa Campground has 23 unpowered sites with space for big rigs and pit toilets, all within 100 metres of the beach. 
• Best for hikers: Yardie Creek Campground has ten unpowered sites with direct access to the beach and Yardie Creek Gorge.
• Best for boat access: Boat Harbour Campsite has five unpowered sites reachable by boat or 4WD only.

1. You can reserve a campsite at one of the park’s campgrounds online via the Park Stay WA website. All campsites must be booked in advance.
2. Reservations can be made up to 180 days prior to arrival. You should book at least three months in advance or as early as possible for weekends and school holidays.
3. You can only book one campsite at a time; additional sites must be made via a separate reservation.

Balmy temperatures and warm waters mean that beach days are possible year-round at Cape Range National Park. April through October is the best time for hiking and camping, with daytime temperatures around 25°C. Time your visit for wildflower season (June through August) for the most dazzling scenery. If you visit in summer, plan outdoor activities around sunrise and sunset, as midday temperatures often reach 40°C. Cyclone season is November-April, so keep an eye on the forecast.

• Cape Range National Park lies along the North West Cape, about a 40-minute drive south of Exmouth. Fill up the gas tank and stock up on supplies before you leave.
• Park facilities include a visitor centre, restrooms, picnic areas, and a public telephone. Bring everything you need with you, including drinking water.
• Park passes are required for all vehicles entering the park.
• Take care driving within the park, as wildlife is often found on the roads. It’s not recommended to drive after dark. 
• There is extremely limited cell phone service within the park.
