Overview

On the shoreline of the St. Lawrence River, Kamouraska blends the beauty of coastline, countryside, and mountains. Officially recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in Quebec, outdoor enthusiasts come to immerse themselves in cycling circuits, hiking trails, paddle adventures, and mountain peaks. (Climbers are drawn to Saint-André-de-Kamouraska, a local cliff with rock walls made of orthoquartzite.) Known for its traditional shoreline eel fishing, the area is known for its local restaurants, which are worth a visit before turning in at a nearby campsite, glampsite, cabin rental, or RV park near Kamouraska.

Where to go

Parc national du Bic

Capes, coves, islands, and bays bless this mountainous estuary on the St. Lawrence River. Offering diverse landscapes, Parc national du Bic is saturated in the sights, sounds, and smells of the sea with captivating sunsets. Alongside hiking, biking, and kayaking, the park is also known for geocaching and maritime wildlife watching, while winter warriors can enjoy skiing, snow tubing, kicksleds, and snowshoes with limited capacity warming huts for extra chilly days. Private campgrounds abound nearby, although on-site camping options include tent campsites, cabin rentals, ready-to-camp sites, and yurts.

Parc national du Lac-Témiscouata

Weaving waters with woods between mountainous marvels, Parc national du Lac-Témiscouata is a one-stop adventure shop along the Lands and Forests of Acadia circuit. Providing on-site campsites and ready-to-camp options, this peaceful, protected land offers hiking, biking, and unique water excursions, too. Opt for canoe, kayak, peddle boat, or paddle board rentals, or journey through time with a unique, naturalist-led sunset rabaska (Algonquin birch bark canoe) trip between Petit Lac Touladi and Grand Lac Touladi.

Parc du Massif du Sud

Disconnect and hook up with nature at Parc du Massif du Sud. Loaded with ready-to-camp accommodations including cabins, pods, yurts, and more, this camper’s paradise is the perfect escape any time of year. Spring through fall allows hikes, bikes, geocaching, and fishing, while winter brings skiing, snowshoeing, fat bikes, and cold hikes. Swing over to the hebertism course for an exciting obstacle featuring climbing blocks, tunnels, a rope bridge, and Labyrinth Castle suitable for all ages.

When to go

Camping near Kamouraska is highly recommended from June through August. With average temperatures reaching over 20°C and very little precipitation, campers can set up shop and explore with ease. As September unfolds, prepare for temperatures to drop quickly and reach an average high of only 10°C by October. November to April brings consistent negative temperatures, only beginning to warm up in the approach towards May. Campers should be experienced in cold weather camping before considering a winter trip to this tiny town.
