Gumtree Dam Highlands

9 sites · RVs, Tents25 acres · Abington, QLD
Camp at our farm retreat with us and our Scottish Highland Coos. We are 5 minutes out of Childers, Queensland. You will have plenty of room to yourself, there is potable water available and porta loos. We have a shower facility now too, is made out of a horse float just to keep my hubby busy haha and to have something a little different. Now my new animals will have to be transported home on the back seat of my car 🤣 The Scottish folk pronounce it Heilen Coos... so that's how we say it, they might be a little shy, to start with but they wander around freely and will love to be hand fed sweet potatoes by you and brushed by Chrissy. Everyone will enjoy seeing these cuties. Feed times have been cut back to once a day at 8am, just like us the fluffies need coo time to chill. We've just had a lovely, very patient camper, (27/4/24) Jo hand feed almost 3-month-old Lucy Moo for the very first time 😁 You'll meet Kelvin the Scottish Highland Bull, Oakley who is new mum to Lucy Moo born 5th of February and Willow, mum to Ferdinand (Ferdi) born earlier this year on the 3rd of January, so two beautiful calves to watch doing zoomies around the yard, swimming in the dam or chilling under a tree 😁 Baz and Nige are our Nigerian dwarf goats that are being bottle fed at the moment. We have 2 dogs Jesse a blue heeler and Cane our Maremma, who are both very friendly. The Maremma dog is an Italian breed of livestock gaurdian dog he does bark a little at night if there is a fox or something around that might hurt our animals. Cane has been very successful at keeping all our pets safe. Guest's have told us they have slept through the night no troubles, in saying that sometimes he doesn't need to bark at all. If anyone thinks the barking might be an issue this probably isn't the place for you. We now have Percy the peacock 🦚 who randomly Honks! Our Neighbours have fish farms, so you will hear the odd shot gun go off at times, just to scare the shags away from feeding in the ponds. We are very easy to get along with but excessive noise or bad behaviour will not be tolerated. Feel free to put on music and have a few drinks by the camp fire, but we want our farm to be a place where our animals and our guests feel safe and relaxed. Thanks for your understanding. Relax with a cuppa, unwind with a book or go for a short bush walk and listen to the kookaburras. All your cares will feel like they are a million miles away as you soak up nature here at our farm. Conveniently there is a dump point in at Childers at the rest area, 16 Cresent St. 6km from here. There are wonderful cafes and bakeries in Childers, an IGA and Woolworths. We are near Bingera National park, Cordalba state forest with an hour to some top snorkelling spots, also Drive passed acres of sugarcane and macadamia fields we are 45 minutes from Hervey Bay and 40 minutes the other way to Bundaburg. We love being so close to the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. We look forward to meeting you. Duane and Chrissy

Dog-friendly camping near Woodgate guide

Overview

Hidden away along the Bundaberg coast, Woodgate is the gateway to Burrum Coast National Park and a great spot for a beach getaway. Head to Woodgate Beach to swim, fish, and spot wildlife such as kangaroos, turtles, and whales, depending on the season. Drive your 4WD down the beach to Burrum Heads, go kayaking or canoeing along the Burrum River, then check out the shops and restaurants along The Esplanade. Pitch a tent at the Kinkuna and Burrum Point camping areas within the national park, or check your motorhome or campervan into a holiday park or caravan park.

Where to go

Bundaberg Region

Hemmed in by tropical fruit orchards and sugar cane plantations, the Bundaberg region is most famous for its Bundaberg Rum and Bundaberg Ginger Beer. Once you’ve explored the countryside, head to the beach town of Bargara to spot sea turtles along the coast or cruise out to the islands and coral reefs of the southern Great Barrier Reef. You can even camp on Lady Musgrave Island.

Fraser Coast

Across the Isis River, lively beach towns and sandy bays pepper the Fraser Coast, which stretches all the way down to Rainbow Beach. Swing by the heritage town of Maryborough, fish along the creek in Burrum Heads, and set sail on a whale-watching cruise from Hervey Bay. There’s plenty of choice for camping and glamping, including tent and caravan sites at the Cooloola camping area in Great Sandy National Park.

Fraser Island

Just south of Woodgate, Fraser Island is the world’s largest sand island and the star of the Great Sandy National Park. A natural paradise for outdoor adventurers, you can drive a 4WD along the beach, cool off with a swim in the Champagne Pools, and paddle around freshwater lakes in the heart of the rainforest. For the ultimate camping experience, escape the crowds at a remote bush camp in the dunes or pitch a tent right on the beach.

When to go

The beaches and wetlands of Woodgate and the Burrum Coast National Park are most popular through the summer months, and this is the best time for swimming, water sports, and turtle-watching along the coast. Don’t write off a winter visit, though. The Queensland sun shines year-round, and with average temperatures of 15–20°C, it’s the ideal time for hiking and fishing. August through October is also whale-watching season.
