We’re so excited to share that on Thursday, Oct. 13, 2022, Hipcamp CEO Alyssa Ravasio spoke at Our Shared Future, a Celebration of Half-Earth Day, presented by the Smithsonian Institution and E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation. Alyssa shared local solutions to preserve biodiversity alongside Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation Queen Quet, and also joined ‘Saving America’s Biodiversity,’ a briefing on wildlife corridors.
This year’s Half-Earth Day celebration brought together distinguished scientists, educators, and activists to discuss global conservation priorities for species and people, equitable conservation practice, biodiversity and climate national policy, conservation biology education, and more.

“By getting more people outside, we’re not only creating future generations who will be more connected to nature for tomorrow, we’re also creating the sustainable income today to ensure the land will be there.” –Alyssa Ravasio
Biologist E.O. Wilson, widely known as the “father of biodiversity,” was the creator of the Half-Earth Project—a bold call to protect ½ of the Earth’s surface from human development. He calculated that this is the only way to preserve biodiversity and avoid mass extinction, a risk today and for future generations.
Along with the research, leadership, and ideas on display during Half-Earth Day, the Half-Earth Project works to continuously discover our planet’s species, support worldwide conservation efforts, and nurture biodiversity stewardship. The project identifies the opportunities we have to protect the most species.
“Our Shared Future is a forum to exchange information and insight that can help us reimagine the way we care for our planet,” explains Dr. Paula J. Ehrlich, President and CEO of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation and co-founder of the Half-Earth Project. “We want to spark conversations not only about why places are special and why they should be conserved, but also why they are an important part of our lives, and inspire participation in their protection.”
