A romantic shepherd's hut getaway for two on the Pembrokeshire coast within walking distance of Newgale Beach

The waves dotted with wet-suit clad surfers, the expansive sands of Newgale Beach, the coastal footpath threaded out across the headland… it’s easy to see why Ian and Liz Haughey fell in love with this part of St Brides Bay years ago. It was only a matter of time before they’d hop across the border from England and move here for good. Now, just two miles back from the beach, their pretty Pembrokeshire home is not only a seaside shelter for them but also a handy home-from-home for others, with a brand new cosy shepherd’s hut open for business in the meadow beyond, perfect for a couple’s retreat.

Handcrafted in Oswestry, Y Cwt Cwtch follows a classic shepherd’s hut designed with a curved, corrugated rooftop and insulated wooden walls. Inside, there’s a compact kitchen area, an en-suite shower room and a double bed that folds out neatly from the wall, cheating space and allowing for a larger living area during the daytime. An eggshell blue interior mirrors the paintwork outside the hut, while attention to detail – from the Puffin patterned pillows to the Welsh cakes on arrival – show that Liz and Ian really have thought of everything. At night you can light the wood burner and perch on the doorstep cupping a mug of coco, gazing up at the starry Pembrokeshire sky. It might be no surprise that the Welsh, Y Cwt Cwtch, translates as ‘the Cuddle Hut’ in English.

Beyond the stable-style front door the best of Pembrokeshire awaits. Most immediately, there’s a stream and slender stretch of woodland you can explore but, for most, it’s about heading back out onto the lane and following footpaths southwards to the beach. It takes a little over half an hour on foot to reach Newgale, where the sandy beach itself is almost two miles long, or you can drive there in under five minutes. A pub, café and surf shop back the beach, with lessons available for first timers, and bodies with boards bob in the water almost all year round. It’s a great place to join the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, too, for a dramatic cliff-top walk to Solva, a pretty harbour village further west. Finish with a pint in the Harbour Inn before catching a convenient bus back home or drive instead onto nearby St Davids for gallery exploring, postcard shopping and an array of eating options.

'You Break' @ The Cabin

Cabin · Sleeps 1
Ever considered a ‘You’ Break? Ever had the time, never mind the inclination, to just have time away for yourself? Having a bolt-hole to take yourself away from constant communications, the internet, co-workers, meetings and other office distractions, to clear your mind of the associated mental clutter and focus purely on your own thoughts? a bolt hole to focus on you? a bolt hole that allows you to declutter yourself, nothing to do but spend time with ‘you’. Increasingly we have guests who come and stay here at Hillcroft for a few days away from the every day hustle and bustle, located so close to nature, the sea and solitude. Some people prefer total isolation, off grid, for a Bill Gates style ‘Think Week’ though we are seeing increasingly guests wanting to be fairly isolated, but having the peace of mind having someone close at hand. Isolation is achieved by having the bolt hole to yourself, to interact only if YOU want to, to spend time in comfort, to please yourself. Reflection time is often best during Autumn, Winter and early Spring where you can really connect with nature across the seasons, often bracing here in Pembrokeshire, though often surprisingly calm with ‘winter’ suns in the micro climates of the coastal margins. Just being in these spaces has many health and wellbeing benefits, investing in the time for yourself, away from distractions, allows you to reset, focus and evaluate your purpose and drive. Not forgetting the benefits of sitting outdoors of an evening, a log fire, clear night skies with little to no light pollution, just you and your thoughts. What we offer: Pick a week from October 2023 to 31st March 2024 Sunday check in early, to Friday, leave late. Minimum 5 night stay. Choose your bolt-hole, Y Cwt Cwtch, our well equipped Shepherds Hut or our popular Summerhouse Cabin Spiggy Holes. You’ll find all you need for a week away, in addition we can also provide a grocery service if required, either before your arrival or during your stay. Bedding and Towels are provided, though some guests do prefer the comfort of their own bedding and towels. Planning your ‘You’ Break? Definitely plan ahead, if you can, to ensure that meetings and deadlines are not going to play on your mind. Set a goal or two that you want to achieve for your ‘You’ Break, the five-day structure provides a specific start and stop date for the ‘You’ break. Having a structure provides motivation to delivering your goals though this shouldn’t be confused with achieving them or treated as a deadline, this can cause unnecessary stress and be a negative factor to creativity, not at all the ‘You’ breaks intended purpose. Use the structure as a framework, not a restraint. You may also want to pack some materials, books, white papers, slide decks, notebooks and pens, to encourage the flow of ideas. We can also help you connect with activities in the area if required including Yoga, meditation, coastal activities. You may just not! Preferring to just connect with your surroundings and the environment. Whatever your choice or preferences, invest in ‘You’. Need more inspiration? https://www.visitwales.com/inspire-me

From the host
When we initially opened Y Cwt Cwtch, the Shepherds Hut, it was with the intention to share this piece of Pembrokeshire with family and friends. Locating the Shepherds hut at Hillcroft took considerable time and discussion and we feel it was worth the time and effort to get this right. It was important that this would be a place where you could feel a million miles away from anywhere, a place that reflected tranquillity but where you could interact if you so wished. Initially we were apprehensive, from the first guests in June 2018 to today, so many people have loved staying at Hillcroft in all the seasons, taking advantage of the location as a base to visit Pembrokeshire, enjoy the coast and the places to visit. Some literally arrived, parked the car and spent everyday in and around the Shepherds Hut, enjoying the cosy hut during the storms, bathed out in the sun or sat around the fire pit under starlit skies, it has become a special place for many different reasons and more than we will ever know. We were reminded recently (by text) that one of our regular guests has actually never met us! In July 2020, we added our Summerhouse, Spiggy Holes, to Hillcroft and guests have enjoyed this quirky new space. By all accounts our Guests want to come here, where they can relax, where they can enjoy the outdoors and in relative isolation. We are a short 30 minute walk to the coastal path above Newgale beach, minutes drives to the havens and Marloes to the south, Solva and St Davids to the west, short drives to the Preseli Hills, Freshwater West, Tenby and Saundersfoot, there is so much to explore in Pembrokeshire.
Nearby attractions
It's a 30–40 minute walk to Newgale beach, which takes just over 5 minutes in the car. It's no more than a 10-minute drive to the pretty harbour village of Solva and less than 20 minutes to the diminutive 'city' of St Davids. All three are a must during your stay, with St Davids a great choice for an afternoons exploring, finishing at one of the many excellent eateries for dinner. From Newgale it's easy to hop onto the Pembrokeshire Coast Path and walk along the back of the bay to Nolton Haven, where there is another small nook of a beach, with expansive sands at low tide. In the opposite direction, the path brings you round dramatic headlands and bluffs to the harbour of Solva. Using the Puffin bus service makes one-way walks easy, with regular buses running throughout the main summer season (less frequent, but still running, our of peak season). There are heaps of other great beaches all the way around St Bride's Bay and beyond – Broad Haven, Little Haven and Marloes to name a few – making surfing and water sports and obviously popular activity. Newgale has surf shops with equipment for hire,  with tuition for surfing, stand-up paddle boarding (SUPing), sea kayaking and wind-surfing.Need more inspiration? See the Visit Pembrokeshire website.
Food and drink

If you're down at Newgale beach there are a couple of decent cafés overlooking the sands, along with a pub and a hardware store. The local villages of Roch and Solva have convenience stores and places to eat – try MamGu (01437 454369), The Old Pharmact and Cafe on the Quay by day and The Cambrian Inn, Harbour Inn and the Ship in Solva by night. The Victoria Inn (01437 710426) in Roch for a pint from their own micro brewery, while St Davids is worth the extra couple of minutes in the car if you want more choice. Travel to the Druidstone Hotel (01437 781221), past Newgale, for the best of the views while you dine.
