Glamping getaways on a smallholding in the Clwydian Range

The glamping at Graig Escapes gives guests a taste of the good life in Denbighshire’s Clwydian Hills. A single shepherd’s hut with an outdoor bath and a handful of family-sized Scandinavian-style cabins are positioned here on a smallholding in the North Welsh countryside. It feels far from city life and yet it's just an hour’s drive from Liverpool, and less than two from both Manchester and Birmingham.

If you fancy sampling life in the outdoors but are not sure how to embrace it, this could just be the place for you. Whether you choose to stay in Loki, the romantic shepherd’s hut, or one of the Scandi-style cabins, all the rough edges of camping have been smoothed away. Beds are made, cushions are plumped, electricity and water connected. In fact, most of the mod cons of a house are included here, albeit on a smaller scale: shower, loo, kitchen and, particularly in the double height Scandinavian cabins which sleep up to four, plenty of space to eat, sleep and relax. In addition to all that, Lucy and Dean, who run the place, provide a friendly welcome on arrival and are happy to offer tours of the workshop where they build their glamping getaways or to take guests out walking with their alpacas (for an extra cost).

Off site, the healthy pursuits continue with walks in those ever-visible hills and cycling in nearby Llandegla Forest. Or if you want to travel a little further, more of the same (and on an even more mountainous scale) in Snowdonia National Park, less than an hour’s drive away. The Pontycysyllte Aquaduct is the must-see local sight, around 15 miles away where narrowboats on the Llangollen Canal are carried over the River Dee. But if you need a fix of town life, try popping to Ruthin, seven miles from the farm, which is about the closest place for a flat white. Once you've been fully saturated in the rural scenery for a few days we predict you wouldn't want one any closer.

The loki hut is a rustic shepherds hut constructed by ourselves here at Graig escapes. Set in the vale of Clwyd in Denbighshire we are located relatively high up so you can enjoy the far reaching views all the way to Snowdonia. The hut is very private and suited to couples and folk who hope to relax and unwind surrounded by nature and animals. The outside bathtub is just stunning at night. We are located just 4 miles from Llandegla forest, 7 miles from Ruthin.

Loki Hut
Our cabin was the perfect stay for my partners birthday. We wished we had stayed longer. The cabin was well equipped with buckets of character. Lots of little extras outdoors including llamas!

The Loki hut is located in and rural part of Denbigshire, we are in an elevated position and the views are spectacular, we have Alpacas, horses, Valais blackness sheep and geese, all of whom you can see from the hut. The hut is fully equipt for long and short stays, log burner, fire pit and and stunning sunken bath tub in the decking outside. Plenty of walks directly form the hut, also One planet adventure [ Llandegla forest is just 4 miles away. Easy drive to snowdonia and zip world in just under and hour.
Nearby attractions

Graig Escapes is set on a working smallholding in the Clwydian Range with alpacas among the animals on site. You can book in to meet the alpacas or even take them for a walk. There’s plenty more walking in the Clwydian Hills and on waymarked routes at Llandegla Forest, four miles from site. There’s a forest centre for visitors where you can find out about routes for adventures on foot or by bike. Oneplanet Adventures hires mountain bikes out and has information on all the MTB routes in the forest. The closest town to site is Ruthin, about seven miles from site. Denbigh, Mold and Wrexham are all close enough for a visit, each around 15 miles away. The Pontcysyllte Aquaduct is about the same distance, carrying the Llangollen Canal over the River Dee. You can take a boat trip across this World Heritage-listed feat of engineering or simply marvel at it on a walk in the area. The 13th-century Chirk Castle, close to the Welsh-English border is not too far away (18 miles from site) and managed by the National Trust. Likewise Erdigg where there’s a mansion house and gardens which demonstrate life upstairs and downstairs (in the main house and servant’s quarters). Snowdonia and all its outdoor adventures are less than an hour’s drive away.

Food and drink

Part of the pleasure of a stay at Graig Escapes is the rural location - so be aware that there’s no shop or restaurant within easy walking distance. The closest pub is The Leyland Arms in Llanelidan, about three miles from the glamping site. For a choice of places for breakfast, lunch or dinner out, or to pick up supplies, head to Ruthin, seven miles away where you’ll find supermarkets as well as independent shops selling local goodies. Head for Ruthin Market Hall for artisan producers.
