Champion Valley

I loved the the camp site! Nice grass and flat for tents, secluded yet got to see the neighbors horses and wildlife was abundant. I had know idea about the paintball and airsoft tho! Next time I'll be including that In my itinerary. All in all, a really good campsite! 5 ⭐

Base Camp

The electrical post should be moved to a location that is near a location that is more level and more easily accessible than where it is currently. In order to get my trailer to a location that I could nearly level with 3 inches of blocks and that I could reach with my 35-foot electrical cord, I needed to pull it between two trees, ending up with one side of the trailer within 6 inches of the tree. Additionally, the electrical box had several bee nests in it, making the connection tricky. Finally, on our second evening there, the electrical power flickered several times, causing the AC and Microwave to turn off for about a second and back on again. I'm not sure what was happening but it did this several times in a 10-minute span.

Tons of beautiful wildlife and butterflies. My family booked two sites and it was nice to be close but have tons of space for our dogs to run. Matt was also super accommodating when we had issues with our generator and approved us moving to one of the electric sites. We would totally camp here again. Thanks Matt!

Compared to the first time I stayed here I'd have to say I was quite disappointed. There is no open water and the entire area is completely overgrown, so even if there was open water you wouldn't be able to access or even see it. Really unfortunate.

Secluded campsite in Lakeville!

This place is perfect! So glad to find a private quiet spot to dry camp in a large rig without driving two hours north. They even dropped off firewood free of charge upon request. We will be returning to Gus’s Grove in the future for sure!

Great Spot for Short-Term

I have stayed in the parking lot spot many times when needing to come down to the cities for short stays (I live north of cities) and it’s always been a great spot. Yes, there is parking lot traffic, but honestly it hasn’t bothered me. No water or sewer; but 30amp hookup is helpful! They have end great hosts.

Do not chose basecamp.

We stayed at basecamp… we paid the extra money for three nights of power. That was our mistake, basecamp is literally a parking lot. Power was 100 feet off the lot up a steep grass hill. The only way to reach the power would be to sleep at 10* in the grass, or 100 feet away next to 500 gallons of gasoline. We ended up dry camping all three days, because it didn’t feel safe. We could smell gas being anywhere near the site. We imagine either of the other dispersed would have been better then what we had. I wouldn’t even tent camp on this incline, or this close to gasoline. We have photos to document. We ended up camping next to two semi trailers… yes that was better then what they provided.

Stayged at Turtle Point and for our group we were in a secluded area by the pond (none of the ponds are swimmable). There were occassional road traffic for the Champion Valley but that was accounted for when booking the site. Short walk to the bathroom (less than 5 minutes) but if you are pinching it would be much faster! LOL! It was a great spot for our 4th of July family get together and would come back again!

Overall our dog liked it best. The site was on an axe throwing range and we had to scavenge for wood if we wanted to use the fire pit. In the morning people started throwing axes at 9 AM so we ended up just leaving. The host did not give clear instructions and we had to arrive before they told us where our site was which was right off the large parking lot.

I almost don’t want to write this review, but Matt and Champion Valley deserve it. I worried that I will encourage too many people to start using this site and it will be all booked up and I won’t be able to come back. This site is amazing! The description is very accurate. What I didn’t have an appreciation for was just how isolated and private this site really is. You have the place to yourself! The only “neighbors” are the incredible birds and wildlife to enjoy. The location is spacious. Be ready to switch into 4 wheel drive to get into the site, path in can be muddy and slippery. There is a great spot for a tent pad, commode, or hammock tucked into a stand of trees. On weekends, you can expect to awake to what the location is known for a paintball establishment. The pop of paintballs is all part of the experience. I rate the site a 101 out of 100, 11 out of 10, or 6 out of 5 stars.

Turtle Point or Beaver Pond?

This site was ideal for a quick mindfulness stay. I heard a number of coyotes in the evening. As well as watching a couple of beavers work tirelessly on a huge oak tree. Fascinating rodents. I heard them around 2 in the morning. Quietly got out of my tent and crawled to the edge of a pond and there they were. I’ll be going back and I will recommend this site to my friends and family. And having free firewood to gather was an added bonus. Thanks Matt!
