Safari lodges for top-end, eco-friendly glamping in Somerset

Hadspen Glamping makes staying under canvas in Somerset about as luxurious as it gets. In an idyllic little valley, with views of the Mendip Hills, you can stay in a safari lodge with proper beds, a rainfall shower, and a hot tub outside. You can order in hampers of lovely local produce, dine out at top-notch pubs and restaurants, and explore everything that this rather well-to-do part of Somerset has to offer. Hadspen Glamping is situated between the lovely towns of Castle Cary and Bruton, next door to The Newt country estate, and a couple of miles from the Hauser & Wirth gallery and gardens. And on top of all that, this place is eco friendly so it’s a guilt-free glamping holiday.

Lights in the lodges are powered by solar, heat comes from sustainably-sourced wood in the log burner, and water is from the Hadspen Estate’s private borehole. This place is very comfortably off grid. There are three lodges in a five-acre plot of land; each slightly different from the others. Horsecombe sleeps up to four and has an outdoor copper bathtub—it’s the best one for romantic stays or smaller families. Lime Kiln has the outdoor hot tub and space inside for up to five, and Horsecombe is the biggest, sleeping up to seven. All have their own outdoor space, as well as a seating area, dining table, and kitchenette inside and, of course, an ensuite bathroom, complete with flushing loo.

The hedgerowed field, the space, and the facilities all make this a lovely place to simply hang out—but there’s lots within easy reach so you’ll want to get out and explore. The pretty and historic towns of Castle Cary and Bruton are both worth a look around and you can walk to either in less than an hour. With a car, you can reach Somerset’s best known-sites pretty speedily too. Glastonbury and Wells are both around a half-hour drive away and Cheddar Gorge is just a little further, through the scenic Mendip Hills.

Nestled in the heart of a picturesque valley, Hadspen Glamping offers a unique experience to those who seek adventure and relaxation at the same time. The site is located in a secluded area, surrounded by trees and wildlife, providing an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Hadspen Glamping is set in the heart of the Somerset countryside, nestled amongst 5 acres of land bordered with native hedgerows and trees nestled in the valley of Hadspen, between the market towns of Bruton and Castle Cary with views over towards the Mendip Hills. Your luxurious Safari Tent is beautifully designed featuring comfortable beds with soft linens and pillows, a well presented living and kitchen area, an an internal en-suite bathroom with deluxe waterfall shower. Outside you are treated to exceptional countryside views from your private veranda and dedicated BBQ are. The Lime Kiln Lodge has a hot tub included. An ideal location to explore Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset you'll have plenty of things to do and see. Nearby attractions

Hadspen Glamping is situated in the Somerset countryside between the market towns of Castle Cary (three miles) and Bruton (four miles); both worth a visit for their historic buildings and independent shops. There are some lovely walks directly from site including past the earthworks which are all that remains of the fortification Castle Cary is named for and up to Lodge Hill from where there are great views across the countryside all the way to Glastonbury Tor. Alternatively, head the other direction to walk to a lovely countryside pub. You could spend a day at The Newt, the neighbouring country estate, which offers lovely gardens and eateries but you'll need to become a member (at a cost of £120 per couple; kids are free). On the outskirts of Bruton, you can visit Hauser & Wirth, a gallery and gardens with a farm shop and restaurant too. Glastonbury Tor itself and Glastonbury town are about 16 miles away. It’s a similar distance to the edge of the Mendip Hills and Wells (14 miles), England’s smallest city with its impressive cathedral and archbishop’s palace.

Food and drink

There are a range of local produce boxes available to buy in advance as add ons to your stay – these include breakfast boxes, BBQ boxes and picnic boxes. Hadspen Glamping is next door to The Newt, a country estate, turned into a members’-only place to visit with a garden, a restaurant, café and farm shop. If you're a member (or want to become one) its cafe and restaurant are a great place for a good meal but otherwise, you'll want to look for other local options. Perhaps try The Montague Inn which is less than two miles from site in Shepton Montague – a walk of 25 minutes if you fancy it. There’s a good, varied menu featuring local produce. There are more options for picking up supplies to cook at the campsite or to eat out in Castle Cary (under three miles from site) and Bruton (four miles away). There’s also a lovely farm shop and the Roth Bar & Grill at Hauser & Wirth on a former farmstead on the outskirts of Bruton.
