The Legend of Possum Hill is an old one. Most likely named thus even before the settlers arived in St. Louis. Before the great expansion west and before the Gateway Arch graced the sky. Wild was the west and animals roamed at will never having seen a man. The acient Indian tribe of Cahokia once had its own travelers who left their mounded cities of pyramids to explore and hunt for new adventure. It was on one of these travels a great storm arose from the spring sky bringing ice down from the heavens. The Indian party was hard pressed to find shelter from such turbulent winds, rain and it was even claimed they witnessed some snow blended in as well well! This particular spring the waters had risen quite high . With this latest storm the creeks and rivers were rushing over their banks. The Indians knew they had to find high ground. They knew they would only be safe in a shelter high enough the raging waters could not breach. Just when they were giving up hope for a suitable place they passed through a low lands grove treading through ankle deep waters when the land started to rise. And rise it did! Up they went up a steep climb and as they crested they found a large grove of hickories, Sycamore and Oak trees. The Indians prized such trees for their strong hard wood and towering hight. They found safety within them and upon chance several hollows in the ancient trees and quickly sheltered themselves in pairs. They weathered until the suns golden rays stretched accross the small pond. In one hollow a young Indian stirred and and he and his companion left their shelter. Reaching back into the tree they grabbed their packs and found hidden behind them, a family of possums who also hIad hid from the storm. Upon return to Cahokia the young Indian told of their travels and remembering the sheltering family of marsupials, he named the place in their honnor because they shared their shelter. And that is the Legend of Possum Hill. Learn more about this land: 4 acres with scattered hickory and oak trees with a small fruit orchard in front of an acre size pond. Plenty of space to have a private camp site and enjoy the sounds of nature. Have a sit by the pond or relax in the shade. The evening could be spent grilling or sitting around the fire ring. Perfect for travelers just wishing for a place to stay while an event is in town or just a place to rest their head on the way through. 16 mies from SIUE and Edwardsvile 45 minutes from most of St. Louis. Far enough out in the country but close enough to the city to not miss out on the fun.

Site 1 - Contryside Escape
The owner was helpful when we arrived and even got our campfire started. The site looking over the pond is lovely. It was difficult to find the site after dark. Having a flush toilet available was why we selected the site. When the owners left at 630am the bathroom was no longer available. Perhaps some sort of out door facilities or 24 hour bathroom option would make this place great.

Karmen's dad, Ron was incredibly accommodating, even staying up late to greet us as we arrived shortly before midnight. This proved to be a great spot to stop for a quick rest and a shower before hitting the road for the next leg of our trip to New Orleans. Thanks Ron and Karmen!

They got the money and never cared to get back to missed calls of their guests. We booked this olace and we arrived there late. It was impossible to find it, and I understand that she had written it in the instructions. They could have put some signs to show where is the camping place, there was no clue at all. We went to the address and turned back without using that place at all. Very lost place…. I called her twice, and she never turned back to even ask what happened with our stay. Money went to trash!

This was a wonderful stay. With the trees, the pond, and the soft grass to put my tent on it was great. I got there pretty late so Karmen had gone to bed, but she made arrangements to have someone answer any questions I had and to walk me through where the site was. Super helpful. Can’t recommend this place enough. It was fantastic.

Nice camp spot with friendly hosts.
Ron was super kind and super helpful. The camp was very clean and well manicured. The camp bathroom is inside their home, so be mindful of that. Very hospitable — would recommend as a quick, comfortable spot to camp for the night.

Karmen and her dad, Ron, were a treat. I arrived pretty close to dusk and Ron met me at my site with a wheelbarrow of wood, kindling, and a lighter. He offered to build my fire for me while I pitched my tent. Lightning bugs had the trees lit up like Christmas. Gorgeous site, great hosts, would definitely stay again.

I loved camping on Karmen's place. There are multiple sites on the property around a pond. We chose the one closest to the house for easy restroom access. It's the same for any site and others are more private. Ron was very nice at welcoming and provided lots of wood and a grate for us. There are more than 10 cats. One is very friendly and visits campsite regularly. There are ducks in the pond. Sound of rooster wakes you in the morning. Sunrise is decently beautiful. There is enough space to place frisbee or something similar.

Perfect night of camping.
I had a great stay at Countryside Escape. I was met by the owner upon arrival and and he was very friendly and accommodating. It was a perfect spot for what turned out to be perfect camping weather.

Very Peaceful
Karmen and her family were very accommodating and kind. We arrived much later than planned, and they were still there to meet us and make sure that we were all settled for the night. It’s a peaceful property on a beautiful road. I highly recommend the stay.

We booked this site super last minute & arrived really late at night, but Karmen and Ron were SO helpful! They quickly responded to my messages and met us outside when we got there even though it was so late! The property was beautiful & peaceful and there was plenty of flat ground to set up camp. We were able to drive our car right up to the site and Ron was so helpful & friendly!! Would absolutely stay again!!!

Peaceful spot by the pond, next closest site wasn’t even visible to us through the trees so it didn’t feel as crowded as most “official” campgrounds. Ron was very helpful, one of our tent poles was broken and he helped us with a temporary fix.

Friendly and hospitable!
Such a lovely property to camp on. Karmen and Ron were very friendly and helpful. They were very communicative which I appreciated and it was very easy to find the place with their directions. They even provided a flashlight for me to borrow when asked. It was also very nice to be able to use the shower and toilet in their home. It felt like camping but with the ammenities of being able to wash and clean yourself in a proper restroom. Really grateful for their hospitality.
