It’s a gateway to wilderness and outdoor adventure, away from the hustle and bustle of nearby cities. Campers can enjoy hiking and birding in Askikwaj Ornithological Forest, or experience the region’s clay belt in Aiguebelle National Park. Where to go

Forêt ornithologique Askikwaj

Askikwaj Ornithological Forest is less than 30 min. south of Amos proper, near La Corne. While it doesn’t have onsite camping, the forest features two looped hiking (or snowshoeing) trails. Panoramic View Trail is a beginner-friendly loop that takes less than an hour to hike, and true to its name, it offers panoramic views of the forest, hills, and nearby Lac Malartic and Lac Baillairgé. Campers looking for a bit more of a challenge should hike Bird Trail, a longer trail flanked by over 70 birdhouses.

Parc national d'Aiguebelle

Just 50-km west of Amos, Aiguebelle National Park preserves part of the clay belt of the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region. The park features geological phenomena, including Mont Dominant and a walkway suspended 22 metres above a large fault. Along with 30 km of hiking trails, the park offers backcountry expeditions, fishing, watersports, and snow activities. Accommodations in Aiguebelle include tent and RV campsites, cabins, and rustic shelters. Traditional ready-to-camp sites feature a two-bedroom tent with double beds, kitchen equipped with cooking surface, small fridge, lighting, coffeemaker, and extra heating, with a picnic table and lawn chairs surrounding a firepit outside. Étoile ready-to-camp sites have the same accommodations in a cube-shaped wood structure sealed in canvas with three double beds.

Réserve faunique La Vérendrye

Travel an hour and half southeast of Amos to La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve, one of the largest wildlife reserves in Québec with over 4,000 lakes—a favorite for anglers, swimmers, and canoe campers. Out of the water, enjoy hiking, berry picking, hunting, and discovering the areas’ plant and animal life. The reserve includes more than 1,250 campsites that are either fully or semi-serviced, as well as 39 cabins with full kitchens, barbecues, and kayaks to explore the various waterways.
